Rochester Red Wings (27-37, 4th, 15GB, Northeast Div. AAA East)
The Red Wings stumbled into fourth place despite a 2-4 week and stay on the road with six against the RailRiders.
Roster moves: RHP Andres Machado optioned from Washington; OF Andrew Stevenson recalled to Washington.
Harrisburg Senators (24-41, 6th, 14½ GB, Southwest Div. AA Northeast)
Harrisburg heads out on the road for two weeks with six against Portland followed by six against Altoona. However, they remain in dead last, 12 games out of 5th place and 14½ out of 1st.
Wilmington Blue Rocks (29-37, T3rd, 13GB, North Division, High-A East)
The Blue Rocks head to Brooklyn, presumably by train and without sleep, for six against the last-place cyclones. Wilmington is on a three-game losing streak after putting together a three-game winning streak.
Fredericksburg Nationals (22-44, 4th, 18GB, North Division, Low-A East)
Fredericksburg broke even against third-place Lynchburg to pull 2½ games ahead of Kannapolis in the “race” to avoid the worst record in the (*srsly?*) Low-A East. It’s six against second-place Salem this week before they return home on July 27.
FCL Marlins 12 FCL Nationals 4
• Hiraldo (L, 1-3) 3⅓ IP, 6H, 4R, 0ER, BB, 4K
• Ribalta 2⅔ IP, 2H, 0R, BB, 3K, HBP
• Arias 2-4, 2B
• Murzi 1-2, R, BB, 2RBI
Three-run rallies in the 2nd and 4th effectively ended this game as the FCL Marlins sent the FCL NAts to their third straight loss, 12-4. Bernardo Hiraldo made his second start but was knocked out in the 4th after four unearned runs on six hits and a walk. He struck out four while taking his third loss. 21-y.o. Andry Arias singled and doubled while Ivan Murzi singled, walked, and drove in two. The rest of the lineup went 1-for-23 with five walks.
DSL Phillies Red 3 DSL Nationals 1
• Moron (L, 0-1) 3⅔ IP, 6H, 2R, 2ER, BB, 2K, HBP
• Francisco 1IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 2K
• W. Diaz 2-3
• E. Ramirez 1-3
No, it’s not your imagination — 18-y.o. Winder Diaz is 6-for-12 in his first five games.
It’s hard to know what to make of the DSL Nats, but there’s some funky stuff going on there.
So far, the team is collectively doing their best Alex Avila impersonation. They’ve walked almost as many times as they’ve struck out (35 BB to 40 BB), leading to a team OBP of .372 despite batting a mere .203 and slugging a mere .257. Incredibly, 5 batters have OBPs over .500, and another 2 over .400 (Derek Dieterich in his equally small sample size is the only other National with a >.400 OBP currently in our farm system).
Perhaps more surprising has been the pitching staff. While the DSL Nats’ opposing pitchers have struggled immensely with their ability to locate their pitches, the DSL Nats arms haven’t in the slightest. They have 54 K to only 6 BB in 41 IP. The arms (avg age 19.6) are slightly older than the bats (17.7), but that largely in part to two 23 year olds (Juan Diaz and Jorge Ramirez) inflating the average age.
It’ll be interesting to watch the DSL Nats this season, especially with so little of interest at the more advanced levels in the system
DSL is just that – the youth academy
Take a look at Daniel Hernandez
20 yr old 3b, SS, 2b with a lefty swing parked on XST list a year after hitting .255 with some alley pop.
The conga line moves on without some
