Syracuse vs. Rochester – PPD
Rochester was rained out for the second time this week, the fourth time this season. They’ll make it up with a doubleheader on Wednesday, July 14. Roster moves: IFs Ali Castillo, Corban Joseph reassigned from Harrisburg; SS Humberto Arteaga recalled to Washington; RHP Steven Fuentes recalled to Washington, placed on 60-Day I.L.
Somerset 7 Harrisburg 0 – GM. 1
• M. Sanchez (L, 1-5) 5⅔ IP, 8H, 5R, 5ER, BB, 5K, HR, WP
• Alu 2-3
• Dunlap 1-3
Two Somerset pitchers combined on a four-hit, seven-inning, 7-0 shutout of the Senators. It was the tenth blanking of Harrisburg of the season. Mario Sanchez took the brunt of the beating, giving up five runs on eight hits and a walk over five and 2/3rds innings. He struck out five while losing for the fifth time in 11 starts. Jake Alu singled twice in his AA debut to account for half of the Harrisburg hit total.
Harrisburg 5 Somerset 2 – GM. 2
• Cate 3⅓ IP, 4H, 2R, 2ER, 3BB, 5K
• J. Romero (W, 1-1) 2⅔ IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 2K, 3-0 IR-S
• Bartow (SV, 9) 1IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 0K
• Marinconz 2-3, 2R, 2B, BB
• Harrison 2-3, 2B, RBI
• Reetz 2-3, 2B, RBI
The Senators bounced back in the nightcap with a 5-2 win to split the doubleheader and split the series. All three of Tim Cate’s walks came in the 4th, in which he retired just one batter with two runs scoring. Jhon Romero relieved Cate with the bases loaded and rolled a double play to escape the jam and preserve the one-run lead. The Harrisburg offense got those two runs back with three singles, the last being a two-run safety by Aldrem Corredor. Five players had two hits in Harrisburg’s 11-hit attack. Roster moves: IF Jake Alu promoted from Wilmington.
Rome 5 Wilmington 4
• E. Lee 3IP, 6H, 2R, 2ER, 2BB, 5K
• German 2IP, 0H, 0R, 1BB, 1K
• Schaller (L, 1-2) 1IP, 1H, 1R, 1ER, 0BB, 2K, HR
• Connell 0-2, R, BB, 2SB
• Arruda 1-4, BB, RBI, SB
Wilmington got three of its seven walks in the 7th and cashed them in with three two-out singles to tie the game at 4-4. Alas, a leadoff HR in the 9th off Reid Schaller gave Rome the 5-4 win. Evan Lee got the start and was peppered for six hits over three innings. He let in two runs, walked two, but struck out five. J.T. Arruda (walk, single) and Brady Lindsly (2BB) were the only two batters to reach base twice as the Blue Rocks also struck out 13 times. Roster moves: IF Paul Witt reassigned from Frdericksburg.
Fredericksburg 12 Salem 11
• Cuevas 4⅓ IP, 9H, 5R, 4ER, 0BB, 5K, BK, 2WP

The F-Nats blew leads of 5-1 and 11-6 but scored the winning run without a hit or walk in the 9th for a 12-11 walkoff win. Fredericksburg took the first big lead with a five-run 2nd capped by an Earl Weaver special by Viandel Peña – the first of two homers by the 20-y.o. second baseman. Michael Cuevas pitched into 5th for the third time but failed to finish the frame for the second time as the Red Sox strafed him for nine hits and five runs to hand the 20-y.o. a no-decision.
The offense got three in the 6th, two in the 7th, and one in the 8th while Gilberto Chu and Davis Moore combined for three and 2/3rds of one-run relief to get the game into the 9th with a five-run lead. Edward Urena came on to pitch the 9th but his Low-A debut was last-call-at-a-singles-bar ugly, as he gave up a homer, a single, a triple, and a walk while retiring just two batters (both by way of the K). Leif Strom let in the last run and one of his own to earn the blown save.
Jeremy Ydens, who led the F-Nats’ 11-hit parade with three singles, reached base on a dropped popup, took third on an Onix Vega sacrifice, and scored on an overthrow from a flyout to right for the 12-11 win.
FCL Nationals 4 FCL Mets 2 (7 inn.)
• Caceres 4⅓ IP, 5H, 2R, 2ER, 2BB, 3K, WP, 2HBP
• Marquez (W, 1-0) 2⅔ IP, 3H, 0R, 0BB, 2K
• R. Gomez 2-3, RBI
• Klein 1-2, BB
The FCL Nats broke out for all four runs in the 5th as they doubled up the FCL Mets, 4-2 in seven innings. Bryan Caceres got the start and went four and 1/3rd innings with both FCL Mets runs allowed on five this and two walks. He hit two batters and struck out three. 18-y.o. Franklin Marquez picked up the win in his professional debut, giving up three hits and no walks over two and 2/3rd scoreless innings. He fanned two. Raimi Gomez led the Nats hit column with two singles and an RBI while 23-y.o. NDFA Brian Klein reached base twice with a single and a walk. Roster moves: LHP Franklin Marquez assigned from Washington.
22 players on DL throughout farm .
Boss that XST list keeps growing .
Pink slips in the future or??
Glad to to see Jake Alu reach AA since he is 24 years old .
Congratulations to Jake ‘no respect’ Alu. Raise your hand if he was on your radar before this year. Didn’t think so.
When you are a 24th round pick you have to scratch and claw your way up.
We’ve talked ad nauseum of how the jump from High A to AA is the biggest one there is and let’s hope he can make the jump successfully. A good start.
Viandel Pena looks to be the 1st one of the big four to make a jump at Fredericksburg. Pretty exciting.
Franklin Marquez — Had to look him up; signed as a 16 year old out of Venezuela, made the leap to the states and he is only 18 now. One to keep an eye on.
The Mendoza maturity time frame to “ the swamp “?perhaps is part of the equation of whether to deal Kyle 12 or not .
I am sure many here have their short trade deadline list of names to consider in the right deal as the sound of the delivery truck backing up grows stronger .
Right , Todd?
This message is for T2.
You were one of Hammering Hanks 44 favorite players to watch . Getting the third time Cycle is awesome but can you restore in your memory bank the pitfalls of hands first into the base since you’re injured yourself before .
In game 1 in HBG, the umpire had a tight strike zone for both sides. After one close pitch, Sanchez screamed at him “where was that?” Since it was a 5 pm start, there were only a few of us there and it was easy to hear it.The pitching coach had to come out and settle him down.
I have attended 5-6 games and watched several on MILB TV. The zones seem to be overly tight for some reason at all levels,In one game it was bottom of 3rd before the 1st non swinging strike was called, and both benches were barking.
LM, what was your initial take Jake Alu’s defense? He’s listed at both 3rd & 2nd, but would be a lot more valuable as a 3rd baseman. I saw he played 3rd in the first game.
I will check out Alu’s defense and let you know.
did you notice that he apologized to the ump before the next inning
