Rochester 6 Worcester 4
• Rodriguez (W, 1-0) 5IP, 2H, 1R, 1ER, 0BB, 8K, HR
• Miller (SV, 3) 1⅔ IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 5K
• Kieboom 1-3, 2R, BB, HR(GS), 4RBI
• Bautista 2-5, R, RBI
• Palka 1-3, BB
Carter Kieboom’s grand slam in the 6th broke a 1-1 tie while the Red Wings ‘pen buckled but did not break for a 6-4 win over the Red Sox. Jefry Rodriguez won for the first time in 2021, as he allowed just one run on a homer and two hits overall over five innings. The 27-y.o. veteran struck eight and did not issue a walk. Alberto Baldonado and Dakota Bacus both gave up longballs to let Worcester get within one but TJ McFarland struck out three of four batters faced for the hold and Justin Miller got the last five outs for his third save. Kieboom also drew a walk and scored in the 8th on a Jake Noll sacrifice fly. Rafael Bautista reached base twice with two singles as did Daniel Palka (single, walk) and Cody Wilson (two walks). Roster moves: C Wilmer Perez reassigned from XST; Ali Castillo added to 3-Day TIL (playing for Team Venezuela in Olympic Qualifier Tournament).
Portland 2 Harrisburg 1
• Cate 6⅔ IP, 3H, 1R, 0ER, BB, 5K, HBP
• A. Lee (L, 0-1) 2⅓ IP, 1H, 1R, 1ER, 0BB, 4K, HR
• Wiseman 1-2, R, BB, HR, RBI
• Mendoza 1-3, 2B, E(3)
Harrisburg couldn’t throw the requisite shutout its offense requires as the Senators dropped their fifth straight game, 2-1 to Portland. Tim Cate went a season-best six and 2/3rds innings that would have been seven were it not for Drew Mendoza’s error. Instead, the miscue let in an unearned run for Cate, who allowed just three hits, one walk, and one HBP while striking out five in the no-decision. The loss went to Andrew Lee on a home run in the 8th – the only hit he allowed. Lee struck out four while finishing the game. Rhett Wiseman gave the Sens an early 1-0 lead (and break up the no-hitter/shutout, natch) with his fourth HR while Drew Mendoza’s two-out double in the 7th composed the two (2) hits in the Harrisburg hit column. Roster moves: IF Jecksson Flores activated from 7-Day I.L, recalled from Fredericksburg.
Wilmington 4 Hudson Valley 1
• E. Lee 3IP, 2H, 0R, BB, 5K
• Brzykcy (W, 2-0) 4IP, 2H, R, ER, 2BB, 4K
• Cronin (SV, 2) 2IP, 0H, 0R, BB, 4K
• Meregildo 1-3, R, 2B, RBI
• Lara 1-3, RBI
The Blue Rocks took advantage of sloppy defense to score three times in the 5th on just one hit to take the opener from the Renegades, 4-1. Evan Lee returned to the rotation and went the first three innings, allowing no runs on two this and a walk while setting down five on strikes. The win went to Zach Brzykcy with four innings of one-run relief on two this and two walks. Matt Cronin allowed just one baserunner (walk) as he fanned four more batters (now 23 over 12⅓ IP) over two innings for his second save. Wilmington managed just four hits and two walks, with Omar Meregildo and Gilbert Lara both going 1-for-3 with an RBI to lead the way. Hudson Valley committed two errors, threw three wild pitches, and allowed two stolen bases in three attempts. Roster moves: IF Cole Daily activated from 7-Day I.L., reassigned to Fredericksburg.
Delmarva 9 Fredericksburg 4
• Theophile (L, 0-3) 5IP, 6H, 6R, 4ER, 3BB, 6K, HR, 2WP
• V. Peña 3-3, 3R, 2BB
• Vega 2-3
• 3-for-23 RISP, 14 LOB
Fredericksburg’s offense couldn’t get out of second gear as they mustered just three hits in 23 RISP chances in a 9-4 loss to Delmarva. They compiled 10 hits overall—all singles—with Viandel Peña collecting three and Onix Vega connecting for two. The F-Nats drew eight walks and left on 14 baserunners. Rodney Theophile completed five innings for the first time in 2021 but was charged with six runs (four earned) on six hits (one HR) and three walks. The 21-y.o. Nicaraguan struck out six (also a season high) but lost for the third time in five starts. Roster moves: OF Ricardo Méndez activated from 7-Day I.L.; OF Telmito Agustin assigned from Harrisburg for MiLB rehab.
What the heck is Wilmer Perez doing in AAA?? He’s never played above NYPL, and hit a measly .221/.277/.324 there.
Also, an Agustin sighting! Nice to see him back.
Finally, after Yasel Antuna’s mini-resurgence, when he collected 4 hits (3 HR) in 5 games, he’s since gone 0 for 20. He’s now hitting .057, along with a potential record worst BABIP of .022 (he’s literally only collected one hit on balls in play). But there’s very little to suggest this is particularly unlucky. He’s only hitting 10% of balls for line drives, and an absurd 41% in field fly ball rate. This makes the pre-season prospect hype all the more perplexing. There really wasn’t any substance to his prospect status, if anything, he’s a whole lot worse than the last time we got a real glimpse at him 3 years ago in 2018. Will definitely be discounting the prospect lists that hyped him up in the future.
Agustin on rehab meanwhile Cole – don’t refer to me as Tyne- Daley heads to FRED with another LH bat .
Evan Lee warming up with the humidity .
Crickets on sage fans about Corban Joseph return to org as OG ( org guy)
Rizzo loves his backstops
I know this is a useless question, but any news on Seth Romero?
Nice outing for Cate, who is conveniently on turn for Strasburg’s next start. Should give the organization confidence that his arrow is pointed in the right direction, and him confidence that he can get good hitters out.
Well, we can now remove Andrew Lee from the Pitching Zeros. His ERA has spiked to 0.93.
For someone who never played professional baseball before last month Brzykcy has more than held his own with an ERA of 3.10.
Interesting Tweet from Matt Weyrich
The strikeout leaderboard for all minor-league pitchers features two Nationals prospects at the top:
1. Cade Cavalli 45 (WSH/High-A)
2. Mitchell Parker 43 (WSH/A)
T-3. Roansy Contreras 42 (PIT/AA)
T-3. Tylor Megill 42 (NYM/AA)
T-3. Jake Eder 42 (MIA/AA)
B-Ref cuts ’em off at 100AB, but if you look in the leagues in which the Nats play on MiLB, they have two batters in the bottom five for batting average at AA, A+, and A-!
The loogie now has its own code on big board . Society advances !!
No Hood to be seen in Nats farm
Well Antuna hitting at the clip of the lower interstate .070.
Mario Mendoza hit better than the JFK- .095
