Rochester Red Wings (20-28, 5th, 13½ GB, Northeast Div. AAA East)
Rochester broke even on its 12-game homestand, but heads to Syracuse – the division’s worst team – riding a five-game win streak.
Harrisburg Senators (18-29, 6th, 11½ GB, Southwest Div. AA Northeast)
The Senators return to City Isle after a 4-2 week against the Curve to face the league-leading Somerset Patriots.
Wilmington Blue Rocks (22-24, 3rd, 7½ GB, North Division, High-A East)
Wilmington broke a five-game losing streak to fall from 3½ to 7½ games off the pace. They host the Rome Braves this week for just their second series outside of the North division.
Fredericksburg Nationals (14-34, 4th, 17GB, North Division, Low-A East)
The F-Nats were just 1-5 against the division-leading Shorebirds and are on a four-game losing streak. This week they host the Salem Red Sox for six. Roster moves: RHP Mirton Blanco reassigned from the FCL.
FCL Nationals 3 FCL Cardinals 1
• Lara (W, 1-0) 5IP, 2H, 1R, 0ER, 3BB, 8K
• Urena (H, 1) 3IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 4K
• Ferrer (SV, 1) 1IP, 0H, 0R, 1BB, 1K
• Dietrich 2-3, R, 2B, 3RBI
• Cluff 1-2, SB
Andry Lara’s professional debut was a strong one, as the Nats’ #5/6 prospect was the winning pitcher in a 3-1 FCL Nats’ triumph over the FCL Cardinals. The 18-y.o. walked three and gave up an unearned run on two hits but struck out eight. No word on which day next week he’ll be pitching in Washington. Edward Urena, who was signed last summer as an IFA, followed with three scoreless innings and four whiffs for the hold. Jose Ferrer worked around a walk in the 9th to earn the save. Landon Dietrich doubled in two in the 3rd and singled in the third run in the 5th to lead the FCL Nats offense. Roster moves: SS Jackson Cluff assigned from Harrisburg for MiLB rehab; OF Caldioli Sanfler released.
[Bringing Plichard’s ?s forward from Yesterday’s comments]
– After the July 11-13 draft (limited to 20 rounds; fwiw, there are several contributing players in the Nats system who were drafted after the 20th round: Jake Alu, Sterling Sharp, Gabe Klobosits) are undrafted free agents eligible to sign with an MLB team?
>> Yes, but the cap of $20K from 2020 remains.
– Is there a limit on the amount of undrafted free agents an MLB team can sign after the draft?
>> Number, no?
– What is the cap amount that an MLB team can offer an undrafted FA?
>> $20K, just like last year.
– Can leftover slot money be used to sign undrafted free agents?
>> It’s not clear whether or not the cap refers to ALL players or just drafted players. Given that’s capped, and that teams are unlikely to sign more than 20 NDFAs, only a handful of which will be signed for the maximum, I would think that it does not count against the slot.
– Can HS players be signed as an undrafted free agent or only JUCOs and 4 year college players in their third year after HS?
>> If 2020 is any guide, yes. Quade Tomlin, son of Randy, was signed out of Liberty Christian HS last July.
– Does the MLB draft league end once the MLB takes place or do players continue to play until they sign (or can they continue to play in the draft league after they sign)?
>> They are not *obligated* to stay, but one has to think that there will be some teams that might prefer to let the player keep playing in the league, *then* bring him to AZ or FL.
– After the draft (and free agent signings), MLB can assign players to either a partner league, an affiliated team, or their Spring training site?
>> This is a brave new world, as *usually* teams would place their collegiate guys in a SS-A club, but that option is gone. Whether or not they choose to use or try to use the partner leagues for that function remains to be seen. One can certainly envision a scenario in which a veteran player is signed in exchange for a “loan” of draftee, or just a straight-up loan. Given that some leagues use roster rules (to prevent teams from loading up with a bunch of 28-y.o.’s and beating on the 22-24 y.o.’s), draftees might be a valuable commodity in that they could swap the draftee for a player that’s been kept on only because he fulfills the roster requirement for rookies.
Thanks!
Luke, thanks for the info. Someone told me they went to a draft league game and it was the worst game they ever saw.
We may never know how a summer off for some young players effected their repetition , maturity and upward projectory.
( Sanfler for one )
Ironic how Baby Shark returns to the dugout and then the dugout dances return from 2019.
Man ! Kyle 12 is causing much more : see you later and “ majestic shot to RF”.
Like the old song lyric goes : all or nothing at all .
One last thing : Castros bit to LF last night for a RBI without my glasses on with the highlights running on my phone am most looked like our friend now with the Rox.
By the way I scored tix off the streets in Denver the first time the All Star game was played @ Coors Field
Beautful views even from the outfield upper levels .majestic like Kyle 12 shots
Has the been any update on Seth Romero and Rutledge?
Destin Hood on the FCL roster! Back in the fold after so many years.
Has to be as a coach, his playing days are over.
My favorite story of his was, after snagging a $2 million bonus from the Nats, leveraging a scholarship offer from Alabama as a wide receiver, was asked if he had trouble deciding where to go said “Not at all, playing football hurts!”
Tough for Caldioli Sanfler, who was one of the GCL Nats’ best players two years ago. Wonder if he simply decided to hang up his cleats, as on the face of it, the Nats had more obvious release candidates.
Agreed Sao
Has Parra truly “ Hendrixed “ Kyle 12 being back in the dugout as Kyle has been on a hot Bobby Bonds esque streak ?
“ Hendrixed “ Dylaned
Aka electrified
Sandler was with the Nats org. for 5 years, his high point being in NY Penn league all star game in 2019.
One of the casualties of last year. Being from the D.R., there’s no way he retired voluntarily.
Hmm, you’re very right. It is possible I mixed him up with Leandro Emiliani.
I had Emiliani pegged as one of the studs for this year. He pulled a hamstring at least 6 weeks ago and never heard from him again.
