Monday’s News & Notes

May 31, 2021
Don’t forget the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day.
Team Yesterday Today Pitching Probables
Rochester Lost, 1-0 OFF DAY N/A
Harrisburg Lost, 6-5;
Lost, 9-2
OFF DAY N/A
Wilmington Lost, 13-0 OFF DAY N/A
Fredericksburg Won, 7-2 OFF DAY N/A

Syracuse 1 Rochester 0
• Armenteros (L, 0-3) 5IP, 4H, R, ER, 3BB, 5K, WP
• Bacus 2IP, 3H, 0R, 0BB, 3K
• A. Sanchez 2-4
• Keller 1-3

The Mets limited the Red Wings to just four hits for another shutout, 2-0, to take the series, 4-2. Roger Armenteros let in the lone Syracuse run on four hits and three walks while striking out five. He was rewarded with his third loss. Three relievers combined for four shutout innings, but the offense couldn’t push across the one (1) baserunner the offense was able to get into scoring position. Adrián Sanchez singled twice, while Alec Keller had one safety and Armenteros had the other. Roster moves: RHP Kyle McGowin, IF Luis García optioned from Washington.

Bowie 6 Harrisburg 5 (8 inn.) – GM. 1
• Teel 4IP, 6H, 5R, 5ER, 2BB, 4K, 2HR
• McMahan 2IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 0K
• Klobosits (L, 0-1) 1⅔ IP, 2H, 1R, 0ER, 3BB, 3K
• Robles 1-2, R, 2B, 2BB, SB
• Corredor 1-3, R, 2B, 2RBI
• Wiseman 1-3, 2B, BB

The Sens dug out of a 5-1 hole with a four-run 5th but couldn’t complete the comeback as they fell in extras, 6-5. Starter Carson Teel was smacked around for five runs on six hits (two HRs) over four innings. He walked two and struck out four. The loss went to Gabe Klobosits, who was saved by a ground-rule double in the bottom of 7th and struck out two to get out of the jam, only to let in the game-winner on a two-out infield single in the 8th.

Bowie 9 vs. Harrisburg 2 – GM. 2
• Reyes (L, 1-3) 3⅔ IP, 7H, 7R, 7ER, 3BB, 0K, HR, HBP, WP
• Bartow 1IP, 0H, 1R, 0ER, 0BB, 1K
• Freeman 1-3, R, BB
• Corredor 1-3, RBI

No such drama in the nightcap as the BaySox pounded the Sens, 9-2 to take the series, 4-1. Luis Reyes didn’t make it out of the 4th as Bowie sliced him for seven hits and seven runs over three and 2/3rds for his third “L” of the year. Aldrem Corredor took the team RBI lead (8) as he plated Cole Freeman with a single in the 6th to break up the shutout. Harrisburg finished with three hits and six walks total for the game.
Roster moves: OF Victor Robles assigned from Washington for MLB rehab.

Greensboro 13 Wilmington 0
• Henry (L, 1-3) 3IP, 2H, R, ER, 0BB, 6K, HR
• Dunn 1IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 0K
• Canning 1-3, CS

Greensboro returned the favor from Saturday night as they shut out the Blue Rocks, 13-0 in the finale to split the series, 3-3. Cole Henry went the first three innings and gave up a run on a home run and two hits total. He struck out six and walked none while throwing 41 pitches, 27 for strikes. The game was not streamed and neither Greensboro nor Wilmington have a media relations employee, so there is no information from which to glean why Henry’s outing was only three innings. Kyle Marinconz broke up the perfect game bid with a walk in the 3rd. Gage Canning broke up the no-hitter with a single to lead off the 6th.

Fredericksburg 7 Down East 2
• Parker (W, 2-2) 6P, 0H, 0R, BB, 12K, HBP
• González 1IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 2K
• Flores 4-5, 2B, 3RBI
• Randa 2-5, R
• Jo. Sánchez 1-3, R, BB, RBI

Mitchell Parker dominated the Wood Ducks again, striking out 12 in six no-hit innings as Fredericksburg took the game, 7-2, and won the series, 4-2. Parker needed just 93 pitches to get 18 outs and even issued a walk and hit a batter. Tanner Driskill lost the no-hitter and the shutout with two runs allowed in the 7th. Pedro González turned in his first clean outing of 2021 with a 1-2-3 eighth, a feat matched by Jordan Bocko in the 9th. Rehabbing Jecksson Flores led the F-Nats offense with three singles and a double while driving in three, followed by Jake Randa’s two singles and Jackson Coutts’s two RBI.

There’s some fantastic arms in this system. Parker, Cavalli, Henry, Cronin and Klobosits have been dominant, and all deserve a promotion. A shout out to Justin Miller, who’s been low-key one of the best relievers in MILB all season (his 0.65 FIP is 6th best among 1500 pitchers in the minors this season). Hope he gets another shot in DC soon!

Also, I hope Parker’s shortened outing wasn’t for injury reasons. Maybe a quick outing before a promotion?

Speaking of which, have there been any Jackson Rutledge sightings? It’s now 10 days since his last start, when he was pulled for shoulder discomfort, but surely they’d have assessed by now whether it requires a stint on the IL or not?

Sorry, Henry’s short outing, not Parker.

But I’ll take this as a chance to talk more about Parker. In his last two starts, Parker now has 12 IP, 1 H allowed, 0 ER, 3 BB, 22 K!! Holy cow. Think the guy has earned the chance to throw against better batters.

I’d say the reason Parker wasn’t sent out for the 7th were the 93 pitches he threw. I hope that’s why Henry’s day was cut short, but I have nothing to go on — not only do Greensboro and Wilmington do not have media relations folks, neither has a local newspaper that devotes any time/energy to the team. I’m hoping the Blue Rocks will be able to hire someone, now that most colleges are done for the year.

As for Rutledge, all we have is tweet from Todd Dybas. And not uncoincidentally, the archive link from Rutledge’s last appearance remains broken.

Totally agree on Justin Miller. Miller, McGowin, and even Dakota Bacus are far better than Tanner Rainey with his 9+ ERA.
Parker is looking terrific for a 5th round pick. You can make the case for 5 or 6 pitchers to be promoted today. There is enough dead weight at Harrisburg & Rochester to make it seamless.
