Wednesday’s News & Notes — Playoff Edition
Team | Yesterday | Today | Pitching Matchup |
Harrisburg | OFF DAY | @ Bowie, 7:05 p.m. | TBD vs. TBD |
Harrisburg vs. Bowie
Bowie won 10 of the 18 regular season matchups between the two teams, including six of the last seven. Harrisburg comes in winners of four straight, but as the parking lot for the 40-man roster, they’ve already lost three positional players officially and one 31-y.o. reliever unofficially. As noted in the comments, there will likely be some reinforcements from Potomac, but as we go to virtual press on Wednesday morning, these have not yet been announced. Likewise for the starting pitchers.
Difo named PCL Player of the Week
Wilmer Difo became the third Fresno player to earn the award in 2019 with a 16-for-36 mark from August 26 to September 2nd. Former farmhand Jacob Wilson won the award for May 6-12 and current Nationals bench player Andrew Stevenson won it for June 17-23. Last week, the Grizzlies also announced their 2019 team awards.
Kyle McGowin will be tonight’s starter in Bowie. Andrew Lee is expected to start game 2 and Mario Sanchez will start Friday in Harrisburg. It will be interesting to see who the Nats send from Potomac. Maybe some of those players many of you have been telling us about all season.
I can’t stop watching the Barrett video. That’s what it’s all about. I assume he’ll be the slam-dunk winner of the Boone Award. In fact, they should consider renaming it after him.
Pretty emotional award. Brought a tear to this grizzled face.
I would like to see Cate and Bartow up from Potomac, but it may be Raquet since they have tagged him as more advanced with the AFL invite. If he’s ready, it would make sense to get Sharp back to Harrisburg. Out of the box: give a brevet two-level promotion to the most dominant reliever in the system, Matt Cronin. He’s pitched in the CWS, so it’s not like the stage would be too big for him.
For hitters, Davidson spent a good portion of the season at AA, and Reetz would make some sense as well.
Five guys promoted to Harrisburg for the playoffs: Cole Freeman, Aldrem Corredor, Jakson Reetz, Carson Teel, and Frankie Bartow

All well deserved.
Great preview. The numbers on Istler, 0.75 ERA in 26 games for Harrisburg and Condra-Bogan, 1 earned run in the last 19 innings, are fantastic.
Yet more great pitching stories this year.

Wow, Teel promoted over Cate. Maybe it’s because Teel has also worked a fair amount in relief. Maybe it’s because Cate is at what they think should be his innings limit, at 143.2 vs. 110 for Cate. Their overall numbers at the A+ level almost mirror each other.
