El Paso 9 Fresno 1
• Espino (L, 7-3) 4IP, 5H, R, ER, BB, 2K
• Blazek 1IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 1K
• Noll 2-4, R
• C. Taylor 1-3, 2B, BB

With last place in the division secured, Fresno can now focus on finishing with the worst record in the league. Losing again, 9-1 to El Paso, is a step in that direction. Paolo Espino got the start and gave up a run in the first and then pitched three scoreless innings. That was good enough to earn the loss, as the Chihuahuas ran wild in the 6th to score seven runs and put the game away. The Grizzlies broke up the shutout in the 7th on three singles and finished with seven hits total. Jake Noll had two of them in four trips to the plate while Chuck Taylor connected for Fresno’s only double and drew one of its two (2) walks.
Roster moves: RHP Logan Ondrusek placed on the 7-Day I.L., retroactive to Aug. 16; RHP Paolo Espino activated from the 7-Day I.L.

Harrisburg 7 Akron 4
• Vera 4⅓ IP, 4H, 3R, 3ER, 3BB, 2K
• German (W, 2-0) 1IP, 1H, 0R, BB, K
• Barrett (SV, 27) 1IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 2K
• Sagdal 2-4, 2R, BB, 2RBI
• Bichette 2-4, 2B, 3RBI
• Garcia 2-5, R, 2B, RBI, SB

The Sens took advantage of three walks to score five times in the 5th and break a 1-1 tie as they took the opener from the ‘Ducks, 7-4. Eduardo Vera made his first appearance since being released ten days earlier and the rust showed as Akron got to him for three runs on four hits and three walks over a four and a 1/3rd innings. Jhonatan German picked up the win in relief with a single scoreless inning, as did Greg Holland for the hold, and Aaron Barrett for the save. Ian Sagdal, Dante Bichette Jr. and Luis Garcia combined for six hits, three runs, two doubles, and six RBI to pace the Harrisburg offense.
Roster moves: IF Adrián Sanchez recalled to Washington.

Potomac – OFF DAY
With its final scheduled off day yesterday, Potomac will finish the season with seven games at home and seven games in Frederick, beginning tonight with three at Harry Grove Stadium. The P-Nats trail the Red Sox by 2½ games and lead the Hillcats by three in the second-half title race. Wilmington, the first half winner, is a 1/2 game behind Potomac and trails Salem by three. The P-Nats can make the playoffs if they win the second half or if they finish second behind the Blue Rocks. In the event of a tie with Salem, Potomac holds the tiebreaker with a 6-0 head-to-head record in the second half.

Hagerstown – OFF DAY
The Suns return home for a pair of three-game series against the Southern Division cellar-dwelling Drive and the Northern Division leading Shorebirds. At 23-26, .500 for the second half is within reach but last place is also possible as Hagerstown leads Lakewood by only two games.

Auburn 3 State College 1
• N. Gomez 6IP, 3H, 0R, BB, 7K, WP
• Knowles (W, 1-0) 3IP, 2H, 1R, 0ER, BB, 2K
• Senior 2-4, R, 2B, 3B, 2RBI
• Arruda 1-2, 2B, 2BB

Auburn broke the 0-0 tie with three in the 8th and held on in the 9th for a 3-1 win and avoid a four-game sweep by State College. Niomar Gomez tossed six scoreless innings with three hits and one walk allowed while striking out seven for the no-decision. Lucas Knowles got his first professional win with the one run let in on two hits and a walk over the last three innings. Eric Senior doubled in two and also tripled while J.T. Arruda walked twice and doubled to lead the Doubledays attack.

GCL Astros 4 GCL Nationals 3 – GAME ONE

Pretty decent starters for the GCL squad for both ends of the twin bill. If Sharp is reasonably recovered, he will be a good candidate for the AZ Fall League so he can get in more innings this year. Next season will be a big one for him as he turns 25. He had shown some serious improvement this year before the injury, with his K/9 up two and his BB/9 down one. FIP (2.59) was great, WHIP (1.41) still a bit marginal.

Voth should be back with the big club in Sept. when the rosters expand. His injury was a terrible break for him, as it looked like he had “won” the fifth starter spot.

What in the heck happened to the Fresno Grizzlies? Up until just a few weeks ago, they were eyeball-to-eyeball with Sacramento for first place in the division. I’m not sure how many games they’ve won since then, but it’s not very many.

Let’s see Sao. Minus Voth , McGowin, Espino (DL) … core of rotation has been bullpen guys like Logan O , Cope and Hoover…add two guys adjusting to beer league @102 F in Braymer and Crowe…

Why not start Sharp @ Fresno for one start before the beer league regular season closes ??

Because you can’t guarantee travel availability on 12 hour notice from Fresno to the East Coast, there is no other MLB organization that sends as much of its AAAA talent to AA instead of AAA. IOW, Fresno will likely be terrible until the Nats can affiliate with a AAA franchise in the IL.

I love the possibility if the Dodgers would relocate to Fresno for north/ south shuttling ….
The GCL Nats face a heavy rain forecast for the remainder of the week. ..

With a lot of the starting pitching in Fresno, the f.o. is not even trying a little.

Denaburg hasn’t pitched since August 3rd. I assume that he is injured. Has that been reported/otherwise confirmed?

You want the Nats f.o./C.I.A. to disclose anything? Good luck with that.

I speculated the last time Denaburg pitched that he might not have been completely healthy all season. He supposedly “fell” to the Nats in the draft because of reported arm issues . . . which the Nats claimed were no longer an issue . . . and then didn’t pitch him at all in organized games last summer (reportedly some in the Instructional League). This year, they haven’t let him out of FLA and have kept him on very low pitch counts. Not sure what’s wrong, but clearly, everything isn’t “right.”
