GCL Nationals Lost, 7-4 vs. GCL Cardinals, 10:00 a.m.

Tacoma 11 Fresno 1
• Crowe (L, 0-3) 4IP, 7H, 6R, 3ER, 4BB, 3K, HR
• Bourque 1⅓ IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 0K, 1-0 IR-S
• Snyder 1-4, R, HR, RBI, 2K
• C. Taylor 0-2, 2BB

Fresno rallied for one in the 2nd and then things fell part for an 11-1 loss to fall into last place in the PCL Pacific Northern division. Wil Crowe got the start and let in the first six runs (three earned) on seven hits (one HR) and four walks while striking out three. James Bourque was the sole Grizzlies pitcher to not give up a run. Brandon Snyder hit his 28th HR to account for the lone Fresno run while Chuck Taylor drew both walks for the Grizzlies.

Richmond 1 Harrisburg 0 (10 inn.)
• M. Sanchez 7IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 4K
• Barrett (L, 0-2) ⅓ IP, 1H, 1R, 0ER, 0BB, 0K
• Sagdal 1-3, BB
• Barrera 1-3, BB
• 0-for-10 RISP, 9 LOB

Twice the Sens got a runner to third base – once with two out (5th), and once with nobody out (10th). They did not score either runner. The Flying Squirrels achieved the feat four times and cashed in on the last chance in the bottom of the 10th for a 1-0 walkoff win. The loss went to Aaron Barrett on a sacrifice, unintentional walk, and a single. Mario Sanchez got the start and one-hit Richmond for seven innings for the no-decision. In between were Greg Holland and Jordan Mills, who both had a runner reach third with less than two out. Both got that runner out with a ground ball hit to 3B Ian Sagdal, who started a 5-2-6 rundown in the 8th and assisted on a 5-2 putout in the 9th. Sagdal, Tres Barrera, and Michael Taylor each singled while Luis Garcia doubled to comprise the Harrisburg hit column.

Potomac 4 Winston-Salem 3
• Teel 7IP, 6H, 2R, 2ER, BB, 4K, 2WP
• Bartow (BS, 2; W, 2-2) 1⅓ IP, 3H, 0R, 0BB, 1K
• Dunlap 3-4, 2B, HR, 2RBI
• Freeman 2-4, R, 2B, RBI

Cole Freeman was denied the go-ahead RBI on his single in the 9th, but took second on the throw home that got Gilbert Lara at the plate. Instead, Freeman would have to settle for scoring the go-ahead run as Aldrem Corredor delivered in the next AB for a Potomac 4-3 lead. After two quick outs, Frankie Bartow, who gave up a hit to the first batter he faced to lose a 3-2 lead in the 8th, nearly repeated the feat in the 9th. Bartow got the benefit of the Dash deciding it worth trying to score from 1st on a single to center. Freeman, in his 32nd game as a CF, bobbled the ball but relayed it to Osvaldo Abreu, who gunned down the runner at the plate to end the game. Alex Dunlap homered, doubled, singled, and drove in two to lead the P-Nats offense. Carson Teel matched his season high with 7IP and let in the first two runs on six hits and a walk while setting down four on strikes for the no-decision.

Hagerstown 4 West Virginia 1
• Alastre 5⅔ IP, 4H, R, ER, 2BB, 7K, HR, HBP, WP
• Troop (W, 1-1) 3⅓ IP, 1H, 0R, BB, 2K, HBP, 2-0 IR-S
• Caulfield 2-4, 3RBI
• Daily 1-4, 2B, RBI

The 9th inning heroics weren’t limited to North Carolina. In West Virginia, the Suns rallied for three in the 9th to take their third straight against the Power, 4-1. An error with two outs set up Cole Daily (1-4, RBI) to double in one and Phil Caulfield (2-4, 3RBI) to single in two. Alex Troop picked up the win in relief as he stranded two while getting the last out of the 6th and tossed three scoreless innings. Tomas Alastre started and gave up the first West Virginia run on a homer and four hits total over five and 2/3rds innings. He walked two and fanned seven.

State College 6 Auburn 5
• Peterson 4IP, 4H, 4R, 3ER, 3BB, 4K, HBP
• Chu (L, 2-2) 2IP, 4H, R, ER, 0BB, 3K
• Carrillo 3-3, 2R, RBI
• Jo. Sanchez 2-3, BB, RBI
• Ydens 2-4, SB

Auburn led 3-0 early but the game turned into a see-saw battle that State College won, 6-5 to give the Doubledays their fifth straight loss. Todd Peterson needed 79 pitches to get through four innings in which he was dinged for four runs on four hits and three walks. The loss went to Gilberto Chu with one run let in on four hits over two innings. Adalberto Carrillo led Auburn’s 11-hit parade with three singles, followed by Jose Sanchez and Jeremy Ydens with two apiece.

GCL Mets 7 GCL Nationals 4
• Hellickson (L, 0-1) 3IP, 3H, R, ER, 0BB, 4K, HBP
• Martina 2-4, R, 2B
• Tovar 1-2, R, HR, 2RBI

Yesterday’s loss dropped the G-Nats back to .500 at 21-21. They are in 3rd place in the GCL East, trailing the G-Marlins by 4½ games and the G-Mets by a 1/2 game. They have five games scheduled against the Marlins but two left against the Mets. The regular season ends August 30.

DSL Update
After winning twice last week, the D-Nats go into the final five games this week with an off chance of catching the D-Twins for 9th place in the DSL South and somewhat better chance of finishing with more than 20 wins.

Is this opinion off base ? The manner in which the bullpen is being overworked like an ole govt Jeep… shall we see Greg Holland sooner than later ??

Grace and Doolittle are cooked. They desperately need a lefty–like Guilbeau. Oh wait…

        August 18, 2019 at 11:32 am

Yeah, Guilbeau has already been called up by Seattle.

Another way to save a bullpen with its collectively tongues hanging out ? Score 15 plus runs. Hurry back , Max31

This is more of a comment for Todd’s site but Jeff, your right, Martinez has broken Doolittle at this point.

      Free Dakota Bacus!

Not broken but almost a shoulder or arm tragedy from a knee injury.
I guess the Elías Bureau is not back yet.
My take on Menhart chart for Sunday. Fedde. Pray for 6 then Kyle McG for an IP or two then my Boston can walk me as Wander steps in before Old Man River Rodney
Interesting in GCL. Only 1 Error today , Grissom. Pena and Martina placing the ball in play ..

Will the Nats frown on Parra if he hits the DL under reason ? Giving Dozier a dugout piggyback ?? Dozier has been a clever signing , Mr Rizzo. Some of us walk back some of the tomato tossing we unleashed earlier in the season

Any lefties on the cheap Nats could lift off waivers from a team backing up the truck with the beepers blaring ??
Harrisburg down Fuentes and Kyle McG deleted. Vera truly a depth piece especially if he can give 5-7 innings on an A outing assignment

McGowin just pitching two IP with an 8 run cushion was holding the line for the gassed bullpen ..

It wouldn’t hurt to try Braymer in the MLB lefty role. I doubt he would be worse than Grace.

Hudson and Strickland have been terrific. I’m not going to quibble about the trades.

KW. Great idea. Braymer pulls a Fassero… pudget sound temp was a good indicator where Braymer is at now with his stuff…
Tovar getting more ABs this week in GCL…

With Snyder and Hernandez both closing in on 30 HRs, has there been any Nat minor leaguer to hit that mark since T-Mo went back to back? Zach Walters made it to 29 one year. Can’t remember about others.

Tyler Moore. He landed up being the quintessential 26th man for his career, getting 778 AB’s over 5 seasons in the show.

More impressive pitching from Mario Sanchez and Carson Teel, who have been quietly enjoying standout seasons that give them an outside shot at Pitcher of the Year honors (Sanchez, too, could find himself jumping to the 40-man roster as he is eligible for December’s Rule 5 draft).

The Fresno Grizzlies have completely imploded lately.

Sao, you made me look. This is Mario Sanchez’s 9th year in the system out of Venezuela, so he’s been available in the Rule V for a couple of years.

In Harrisburg, he has a 2.72 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP, both impressive. You have to think if he’s not protected someone will take him this time.
