Las Vegas 16 Fresno 3
• Fedde (L, 0-1) 4IP, 11H, 7R, 7ER, 2BB, 3K, 2HR
• Marmolejos 3-4, 2B, RBI
• Reynolds 0-2, 2BB
Fresno gave up runs in the double digits for the fourth straight game—sixth in eight—in a 16-3 loss to Las Vegas. Erick Fedde got 12 outs but gave up 11 hits, two walks, and seven runs for the loss. Four relievers gave the position players the night off… when they weren’t chasing down 12 more hits over the last four innings. José “Orange” Marmolejos singled twice and doubled twice to account for half the Grizzlies hits and one of its three RBI.
Roster move: RHP Logan Ondrusek placed on the 7-day I.L., retroactive to June 26.
Erie 3 Harrisburg 2
• Tetreault (L, 2-4) 6IP, 6H, 3R, 3ER, BB, 6K
• Guilbeau 2IP, 1H, 0R, BB, 3K, WP
• A. Sanchez 3-5, R
• Garcia 2-5, R, 2B
The Senators offense continues to sputter, failing to score more than three runs for the eighth time in nine games in a 3-2 loss to the Seawolves. Jackson Tetreault gave up all three Erie runs on six hits and a walk while fanning six. His second AA quality start was rewarded with his fourth loss. Taylor Guilbeau held things close for two scoreless innings while watching his teammates get on base three times and stay there for a total of 10 on the night. Adrián Sanchez led the Harrisburg hit column with three singles, followed by Luis Garcia and Ian Sagdal with two hits apiece.
Carolina 4 Potomac 1
• Raquet (L, 5-8) 5⅔ IP, 5H, 4R, 4ER, BB, 10K, HR, 2WP, HBP
• Pantoja 1⅓ IP, 2H, 0R, BB, K
• Harrison 1-3, BB
• Reetz 1-4, 2B, RBI
Nick Raquet struck out a career-best of ten in a 4-1 Potomac loss to Carolina. He also gave up all four Mudcat runs on five hits and a walk to lose for the eighth time. Jakson Reetz broke up both the no-hitter and the shutout with an RBI double in the 7th. Telmito Agustin, who scored the lone P-Nats run after reaching on an error, and K.J. Harrison were the only two Potomac batters to reach base twice as Potomac was held to two hits and two walks.
Delmarva 3 Hagerstown 1 (10 inn.)
• Peguero 6IP, 7H, R, ER, 0BB, 4K, WP
• Stoeckinger 3IP, 2H, 0R, 0BB, 1K
• Turner (L, 1-2) 1IP, 1H, 2R, 1ER, 2BB, 1K, HBP
• Cluff 1-4, R
• Vickers 0-3, SF, RBI
Make that six straight losses for the Suns, who fell in extras, 3-1 to the Shorebirds. Francys Peguero pitched well and got a no-decision while the Pope remains Catholic. Jackson Stoeckinger also threw well but OT Turner stumbled again, giving up the last two Delmarva runs on a hit, two walks, and a Victor Robles in the 10th. Hagerstown racked up four singles and two walks, with only Justin Connell reaching base twice (single, HBP) while stealing two bases.
Auburn 1 Williamsport 0
• Troop 4IP, 2H, 0R, 0BB, 9K
• A. Hernandez (W, 1-0) 3IP, 3H, 0R, 0BB, 3K
• Segura (SV, 1) 2IP, 1H, 0R, BB, K
• Caulfield 2-2, 2B, BB
• Pratt 2-4, 2B, 3B
Three Auburn pitchers combined on six-hit, 1-0 shutout of the Crosscutters. Alex Troop went the first four innings and struck out nine of 14 batters faced without issuing a walk and giving up two hits. Alfonso Hernandez got the win in relief with three hits allowed in three innings and three more K’s while Fausto Segura closed it out with the final hit and only walk allowed over two innings for the save. Phil Caulfield singled, doubled, and walked while Andrew Pratt doubled and tripled. The lone run came in on a two-out error.
GCL Nationals – OFF DAY
Alex Troop returns with a flourish! Looks like there’s not much left for him to prove in the NY-Penn League. Move up Stoeckinger and/or Peguero and give him a slot at Hags. Andrew Lee is the obvious promotion from Potomac.
Tetreault just turned 23 earlier this month and is holding his own in AA, just two years after being drafted. That’s what it’s about. There’s going to be some interesting rearrangement of prospect rankings for this club after what some of these guys have done this season.
Agreed. The future looks good with the hot S.P. prospects in Harrisburg.
They better hurry up with Lee, he’s on his 3rd elbow.
The prospect rankings at this point are totally obsolete.
Sure seems that way. Canning, Agustin, and Pineda have been abysmal this season, and certainly the likes of Raquet and Irvin haven’t done much to show why they should be ranked ahead of Tetreault or Fuentes.
Nice showing by Troop. Hopefully he builds on it. Promising, even if it’s just one outing so far.
Troop was already at Hags when he got hurt. No reason to keep him at Auburn once he shows that he’s healthy and back up to speed. When you strike out 9 of 14 batters, you’re better than that league.
Keeping it weird in Portlandia where the coffee is good.
Time to make hay while the schedule is favorable.
And wow, was Fedde scary-bad. Austin Voth: you’ve been waiting for years for a real MLB opportunity. With Fedde struggling, the Ross meltdown over the weekend, and Hellickson not even pitching in rehab yet, Voth would look to have a few MLB starts to establish himself. I guess McGowin would be the next up if Voth struggles.
Heh…that’s because Fedde isn’t used to playing slow pitch softball. Don’t they have a 10-run mercy rule in that joke of a league?
KK — Just think of the PCL as ‘toughening up’ the pitchers who are sent there.
It might help Michael Taylor get his confidence back.
Bringing the draft bonus discussion forward to today.
As noted by Pilchard, the remaining two draft picks (Mendoza and Cronin) have now signed. Meaning all picks in our first 25 rounds are signed except Lucas Knowles, our 14th rounder who appears committed to Kentucky.
With that out of the way, it seems that the Nationals are $286,700 over slot. Our total pool allotment is $5,979,900. Teams can spend up to 5% over their total allotment, but must pay a 75% tax on any overages. Once 5% is surpassed, then teams start to lose picks next year. The penalty increases as the allotment breach increases.
So how much did the Nationals overspend? $286,700 is 4.79% of our allotment, narrowly keeping us under the penalty threshold. However, we still must pay a 75% tax on it. Meaning MLB collects $215,025 from us.
Also I commented that Randa’s $300k bonus after the 10th round might be the highest. It isn’t. That award goes to the Braves and Tyler Owens who signed in the 13th round for $547,500 (equivalent of the 107th pick’s slot value).
The Braves didn’t stop there. They also gave their 19th rounder $447,500 and their 11th rounder $347,500.
Randa and Arruda ($250k) were, however, in the top 10 or 15 highest bonuses for a pick outside the top 10 rounds.
Thanks Will, I was mostly wondering about when you start losing draft picks. I thought it was after dollar 1, but not. Who cares about the money, the Nats are swimming in money.
I did note that it appears that $10,000 is the minimum for draft picks now. It was $1,500 for the longest time.
The curious part so far is the Nats haven’t signed their 26th & 28th round picks, who are both seniors and have no leverage or anyplace else to go. Maybe they were insulted by the offer they got.
Now watch the Orioles claim that proves MLB is in bed with the Nationals.
On paper, I thought well of the Randa and Arruda picks. On the field, they look like they’ve got a ways to go, with Randa hitting .143 and Arruda at .174.
Sure hope Mendoza in particular will be on the field at Auburn soon. The Nats really need him to succeed, as they don’t have a lot of young hitters who are making many strides, particularly guys with any power.
Cornin has been touted as a polished reliever who could make a Glover-like move through a system. We’ll see.
MAT sent to Fresno. Apparently, if the Nats keep him off the MLB roster for 20 days, MAT won’t be eligible for free agency after the season. Still think the Nats will trade him before July 31.
MASN reporting Michael A. to HBG. We can use something to shake this team up and start winning some games!
It makes sense. His time here is up.
When is marmolejos going to get some love. It wasn’t long ago he won player of the year in back to back years. All he does is hit,
