New Orleans 6 Fresno 4
• Ross 4IP, 5H, 3R, 3ER, 0BB, 3K, HR, WP
• Copeland 2IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 3K
• Rodney (L, 0-1) 1IP, 1H, 2R, 1ER, 0BB, 1K, HBP, WP
• Hernandez 2-3, BB, 2RBI
• Keller 2-3, R, RBI
Fresno rallied for four in the 5th only to see the ‘pen give it away in the last two innings for a 6-4 loss. Joe Ross was knocked for three runs on five hits, including a two-run HR, over four innings but walked none and struck out three. The Grizzlies capitalized on two walks and two Victor Robles to score four times on just two singles. They would finish with just five hits and five walks total while striking out 12 times. Derek Self blew his second save as he served up his 6th HR in 37IP in the 7th. Fernando Rodney then showed he’ll fit in with the current DC relievers with the final two Baby Cakes runs allowed in the (you know it) 8th on a hit batsman, a single, a wild pitch, an error, and a sac fly. Yadiel Hernandez and Alec Keller led the Grizzlies hit column with two singles apiece.
Harrisburg 7 Binghamton 3
• Braymer 4⅓ IP, 5H, 3R, 3ER, 4BB, 3K, 2HR
• Bonnell (W, 1-0) 1⅔ IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 0K, 3-0 IR-S
• Mills 2IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 5K
• Sanchez 3-4, 3R, 2HR, 2RBI, SB
• Kieboom 3-4, RBI
• C. Taylor 2-4, R, 2K
With three HRs and strong bullpen work, the Senators took the rubber match from the Rumble Ponies, 7-3. Ben Braymer’s run of five or more IP ended as Binghamton knocked him from the box with one out in the 4th, all three Binghamton runs charged to him on five hits including two HR. He walked four and struck out three. Bryan Bonnell stranded all three runners he inherited (how novel) and pitched a scoreless 6th to pick up his first win. Adrian Sanchez homered twice while Austin Davidson went deep once as Harrisburg registered 11 hits, with Sanchez and Spencer Kieboom each collecting three.
Potomac 6 Lynchburg 0
• M. Peña 7IP, 2H, 0R, BB, 6K
• Fletcher 2IP, 0H, 0R, BB, 2K
• Agustin 2-3, 2B, SF, 2RBI
• Freeman 2-4, 2R, BB, RBI
• Banks 2-5, 2R
Potomac extended its win streak to four with a 6-0 shutout of Lynchburg in the series opener. Malvin Peña held the Hillcats to just two hits and a walk while fanning six over seven innings to pick up his fourth win. Aaron Fletcher closed out the game with two scoreless, issuing a walk and striking out two. The P-Nats put up three spots in each of the first two innings, at one point stringing together five consecutive hits as they pounded out 12 hits total, including four doubles, with Nick Banks, Cole Freeman, and Telmito Agustin each having multiple hits.
Delmarva 3 Hagerstown 2 (10 inn.)
• Adon 6IP, 6H, 2R, 2ER, BB, 8K, HR
• Turner 2IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 5K
• Stoeckinger (L, 1-2) 1+ IP, 2H, 1R, 0ER, 0BB, 0K
• C. Wilson 2-4, 2B
• Perkins 2-4, 2B
• Connell 1-3, R, BB, CS, OF assist at HP
While the Suns matched their output from the previous three games, they lost their fourth straight, 3-2 in 10 innings to the Shorebirds. Joan Adon turned in his third quality start with two runs allowed on eight hits and one walk while striking out eight. He was rewarded with a no-decision. After two goose eggs from OT Turner, Jackson Stoeckinger erased a single with a double play in the 9th, but no such luck in the 10th as his second hit allowed plated the free runner for the loss, his second and the Hagerstown’s 17th by one run.
Joan Adon seems to have gotten a little overshadowed by all the college arms who have come through Hags and moved on to Potomac. He’s starting to look like the real deal, though, at age 20.
As for one of the college pitchers who moved up, good to see a strong bounce back from Fletcher after a rough outing.
Time to see what Freeman and maybe Banks can do at AA? They’re not getting any younger.
Then there’s .365/.452/.697 with 16 homers. Here’s thinking Yadiel will be leaving for a two-bit reliever within the next six weeks . . .
Yeah, I’m too a bit puzzled by Freeman. When he was drafted, he was already basically a finished product. And yet, they’ve been extremely conservative with him since then. He went missing in 2017, then played the entirety of 2018 in Hagerstown, and is still in Potomac, even after Bryan Mejia got demoted.
Harrisburg’s 2B have been bad this year, and none of them are prospects. Meanwhile Freeman has walked more than he’s struck out, and is hitting .319, and even strangely shown some versatility playing a few games in CF and RF.
We know what we have in Sardinas (an abysmal MLB line of .224/.274/.292) and Sanchez (only slightly better at .269/.284/.345). It wouldn’t take much to best them, but Freeman will never get the chance if he takes it a level per year. He’ll be 27 by the time he reaches DC.
Freeman has quietly been one of our top performers in the low minors this year. Impressive.
A new name surfaces in the DSL academy roster. S/R catcher. Bryanth Sanchez
Freeman Peterson Karp Mendoza … Seminole’s vs Cajun Tigers … more viewers than some staying up for San Diego games ??
Dr Doolittle blows a gasket in San Diego or just worn out or misses the home field advantage golf cart??
Let’s see if Nats sign the last lefty arm drafted and that lefty out of Laguna Beach.. loogie lefty … LALA land …
Did the Nats day three draft a pitcher out of which UC program. ? Not Berkeley but maybe Riverside ??
Irvine. Bocko could end up on the Hill after trying to get to the Nats Park hill with his politiCAL science major
Dupree from COC the new Norfork??
Bichette senior must date back to angels with Rizz and Kline ??
F troop bat or Senators ??
Sometimes you sense a guy may end up on your expos but it ends up his son joins the Nats farm.
Into the Montreal mystic as van morrison might hum
Freeman turns 25 in September, so the clock is already ticking a little faster on him. He’s had a weird trajectory. He signed late, as a senior, because of the CWS but then never played at all at Auburn in 2017, perhaps because of some unannounced injury. He therefore started his pro career with a full-season team in Hags last year, and he struggled, particularly for the first half of the season. He did recover to some half-respectable numbers (.266 BA, .354 OBP) by the end of the year, but overall, he was a disappointment. He has hit much better at A+ this year, but he’s “old for the level,” so until he has a chance at AA, it’s going to be hard to know how far he might go. He seems to have near-elite speed, but he’s position-limited to be a real utility guy if he can’t play SS. Difo and Sanchez stay on call because they can play SS (sorta kinda). (I think Difo will be out of options next year, though.)
Freeman may be a good AFL candidate as well.
If Rendon walks, there’s two gaping holes on our big league team: 2B and 3B. Kieboom can only play one of them.
We’d be smart to start contingency planning for that. A good first step would be to take stock of our farm system.
Anybody here have intel on the DSL kids? Arias , Fernandez and Hernandez and several others on DSL roster but not playing so far . GCL bound ?
Erik Tejeda the reverse Jefry-Rod where he is slugging 1b/3b
For Sandy Martinez ??
Yeah, basically any player currently on the DSL that hasn’t yet played in the DSL this season is most likely slated to join the GCL (or released). So all of those you mentioned will appear in Florida soon.
Luke. Splain the IR-S in bold italics
My Boston has taken me to his favorite corner on his walk – the corner of Bill Singer and Randy St Claire
I am glad BW3 closed up before the Corbin melt down.
Hunter Renfroe is either an All Star or benefiting from cozy Petco Park like Reds benefit from GAB
IR-S is pitcher speak for inherited runners/scored. When you have a 3-0 that’s as good as it gets.
That’s new to me
If nothing else, it’s a means of measuring how effective a reliever is at doing his job. They used to charge those runs to the reliever, which was somewhat fair if he came in with two out and a runner on 1st, but definitely not fair if he came in with the bases loaded and nobody out and rolled a DP or got a sac fly. (That’s a scenario often cited as argument against the blown save). Like saves, it would be better if there were a point system but good luck getting any consensus. So we’re left with the raw how many runners did he inherit and how many did he let score without any regard to the outs or where the runners were.
As Garrett Morris said on SNL: baseball been beddy3 good to me. See ball – hit ball
Braymer and Corbin has similar outings
Hmm so Elder Boone hired Menhart
New smart phone , Luke.
Was I the only one to pick up this? Fernando ( cue ABBA song ) got kicked by Kickum yard as baby cakes GW
Hoping Drew Ward will be headed to AAA when he finishes his rehab in WPB! What else can he do in AA.
Maybe that’s why Bichette Junior signed on for farm duty
Pretty impressive lines for Mills and Turner. The latter in particular has been dominating Hagerstown and should hopefully get his chance at High-A soon.
Cane would say there is a long conga love for the
Vaudeville audition cast
Nats purchase Dante Bichette Jr. from the Atlantic League. His old team says he’s going to Harrisburg. Nice knowing you, Luis Sardiñas.
More likely, Drew Ward is out longer than expected. Bichette plays the corners infield positions, not SS/2B like Sardinas.
Indeed
Adrian Sanchez has been playing a lot of third base lately.
