El Paso 7 Fresno 5
• Voth (L, 2-2) 5IP, 8H, 4R, 3ER, 2BB, 4K, HR
• Hoover 2IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 1K, WP
• Noll 2-4, 2B
• Reynolds 2-4, 2B
El Paso put up three in the 3rd and one in the 4th and cruised to a 4-2 win to extend the Grizzlies’ losing streak to six. Austin Voth lost for the second straight start, giving up all four Chihuahua runs on eight hits (one HR) and two walks over five innings. He struck out four. J.J. Hoover (2IP), Tanner Rainey, and Dakota Bacus combined for four scoreless innings of relief. Fresno loaded the bases in the 8th and gave a three baserunners a steady breeze as the next three batters fanned to end the rally. Jake Noll and Matt Reynolds both went 2-for-4 with a double to lead the Grizzlies eight-hit, one-walk offense. Roster moves: C Raudy Read placed on 7-day I.L.; C Matt Reistetter activated from 7-Day I.L.
Reading 7 Harrisburg 4
• Mapes (L, 2-1) 5IP, 7H, 4R, 4ER, 3BB, 5K, HR; 1-2, BB
• M. Sanchez 1IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 0K, 7-6 PIT-K
• C. Taylor 3-4, 2B, BB
• Mejia 2-4, R, 2-2B, RBI
The improbability of continual solar projection upon the prosterior of a given canis domesticus was demonstrated with a 7-4 loss by the Senators. Tyler Mapes took his first loss with four runs allowed on seven hits and three walks while striking out five. Mario Sanchez sandwiched scoreless innings around Ronald Peña’s three-run 7th. Chuck Taylor led the Harrisburg hit column with two singles and a double, followed by a pair of doubles by Bryan Mejia.
Potomac 18 Winston-Salem 4
• M. Peña (W, 2-1) 5IP, 6H, 2R, 2ER, 2BB, 6K
• Fuentes 2IP, 2H, 0R, 2BB, 4K
• Masters 5-6, 2R, 2B, HR, 3RBI
• Harrison 4-6, 4R, HR, 4RBI, SB
• Freeman 3-7, 2R, 2-2B, 2RBI, SB
Every batter reached base, and the even one who didn’t collect a hit still drew three walks as Potomac defenestrated Winston-Salem, 18-4. Malvin Peña won for the second time with five innings of two-run ball on six hits and two walks. He struck out six. David Masters led the barrage with five hits, including his 6th HR to match his 2018 total, while K.J. Harrison notched four to get back to .500. The team racked up 21 hits total and drew five walks; three by the beer man, Aldrem Corredor.
Asheville 7 Hagerstown 5
• Alastre 3⅓ IP, 4H, 4R, 4ER, 5BB, 3K, WP, PO at 2B
• Stoeckinger (L, 1-1) 1⅔ IP, 4H, R, ER, 0BB, 1K, 1-1 IR-S
• Lara 3-5, R, 2B, HR, 2RBI, E(9) – 16G hit streak, longest this season in MiLB*
• Perkins 2-4, 3B, 2RBI, 2PB(4)
• Wilson 2-5, R, 2B, RBI
* H/T Suns PR
The Suns couldn’t overcome 14 batting strikeouts as the Tourists made off with a 7-5 win. Tomas Alastre got knocked from the box in the 4th after four hits and five walks. The loss went to “OJ” Stoeckinger, as the Other Jackson let in one of Alastre’s runs and one of his own over an inning and 2/3rds. Gilbert Lara continues to outhit his defense as he singled, doubled, and homered to drive in two, as did Nic Perkins singled, tripled, and also drove in two while letting four balls skip past him (two PB, two WP).
KJ Harrison’s OPS in Hagerstown was 1.134 when he was bumped up to Potomac and he’s responded so far with a 1.250 OPS. I’d say the adjustment has been going well.
Folks, it’s looking like we have a real live prospect here. Wasn’t thinking that at the time of the trade.
I think it was KK that first brought this up but it’s time for Austin Voth to transition to reliever while he still has an option remaining. This is the last year the Nats can keep him in the minors.
I think Voth has made a really strong case for himself so far this season. Whether he manages to actually get back in the front office’s graces remains to be seen, but that’s rarely based on performance and logic (see Davidson, Hernandez, etc.).
So far he’s severely upped his strikeout rate, going from 8.38 K/9 to 12.31 K/9, and while playing in super hitter-friendly PCL, he’s kept his ERA down (only 3.57, when league average is 5.33), and more importantly kept the ball in the park, only 2 HR allowed in 22.2 IP.
It looks to me like something has clicked with Voth. Though this wouldn’t be the first time we’ve said this (or even the second or third). With Hellickson and Sanchez stinking up our big league rotation (and the potential Strasburg could opt out this winter), and only Fedde and perhaps Crowe ahead of him in the pecking order, it would be wise to keep Voth as a rotation option.
Come again , Luke , Canis what ? I type here at this USPO where the woman behind the desk talks like it’s down home Cracker Barrel …,the whole org could use rain outs including Davey one day closer to seeing the Door …
Luke has his inner Carl Sagen coming out
Nah, I just felt like “the sun don’t shine on the same dog’s ass all the time” to be a little too blunt.
Don’t worry. We both grew up with screen writers for Dirty Harry Callahan
Getaway day lineup for Knorr in matinee. Wow. A Fresno starter puts up 3 opening goose eggs.
The Padres must reallly like their slugger Naylor @ ELP.
Luke break out that solar eclipse line for 4 bags and 9 Ks McGowin.
The HP blue must be hearing the busses warmed up for leaving town cause batters are swinging Kevin Long style and piling up 15 Ks
In F troop fort
As an old Ex- po fan having to had endure the palm leaves laid at the feet of ATL for a decade and a half and seeing A hats with the various leading NASCAR number hats , I have to say this …. I guess the Bobby Cox magic and mojo did not pass onto Lilliquist, who could not resurrect a Lazarus bullpen …
Impressive. 2 errors by Grizz and club still hangs a Shutout on El Paso
Good points. This has to be the year for Voth because we can’t send him down next year.
Would rather watch him get shelled by opposition pitching than Hellickson at this point.
I watched Voth last night. He was sharp in the first inning and then fell apart. I was surprised he managed to limp through five innings.
McGowin was very, very good today. He was locating breaking balls to both sides of the plate and changed speeds effectively. Plus he blasted two doubles into the gaps, one of which was just a couple feet from being a home run.
Adios , O’Keya Dickson
Oops I did not read on Sens roster deep enough
New debate. Hernandez up nextor does Wiseman hopscotch over him??
Bravo. Paul Menhart up. Who takes over his gig??
Where is the tri state Greek chorus crescendo
Over Liliquist laid waste ?
Or is his head the first to fall ….
As Brian Wilson wrote Smile. 4-4. 4 SB
Augustiiiiiiinnnn!!
Canning in CF. perhaps a Bob Boone suggestion??
Always good to win on the farm with steady starting calming the feet on defense .
Cane you include PBs in your nightly error totals ??
Funny thing is Rizzo loves to add pitching when there is a need from the FA pool versus striking gold in June amateur draft.
The Padres sure have a legion of lefties after seeing their guys in DC and the snippy dogs @ El Paso.
Wish we can score with a lefty this June. Maybe the Hondo @ TCU ??
Went back to look at KJ Harrison’s career at Oregon State. He was a stud.
As a freshman, Harrison was the Pac-12 Freshman of the year and was freshman All-American. He led the Beavers in HRs and RBIs.
As a sophomore, he was All Pac-12 first team, and again led the Beavers in HRs and RBI.
As a junior, Harrison was again All Pac-12 first team, leading the Beavers in HRs was 2nd in RBI, and batted cleanup for a team that had maybe the greatest college regular season ever. That Oregon State team entered the NCAA Tournament at 49-4 and then won seven straight in the NCAA regionals and College W-S before shockingly losing 2 straight to LSU to finish the year 56-6 (think about how good Harrisburg has been this year, and they would need to go 35-1 over the next 6 weeks to get to 56-6).
In 2017, after his college season, Harrison was a 3rd round pick of the Brewers, and had a good 2017 short-season debut (.934 OPS), but struggled in A ball in 2018 before getting traded last August.
The questions about Harrison have to be where he can play in the field as he is a 6-0 right handed first baseman (not a whole of those in the MLB) — Harrison has caught some in college and for the Brewers. That’s said, he puts up numbers. Will be fun to follow.
Well Harrison is an improvement on Grant DeBruin from days past at 1 b or DH
Maybe Potnats are awaiting Hill’s return so Johnson can slide into that B starter 4-7 role ??
Hernandez seems like the guy to get a call if Soto lands on IR
Jeff, I agree with the sentiment posted earlier this week…”Free Yadiel Hernandez!”
Some hunch is telling me Santander from Orioles would be a neat pick up
Any word o how Johnny DiP is doing scooping up kids before the Intl amateur signing deadline ??
Too bad Arias or DeLaCruz cannot duplicate the accent Soto did to fill a bench spot
