Monday’s News & Notes

May 7, 2019
Team Yesterday Today Pitching Matchup
Fresno Lost, 11-2 @ Las Vegas, 10:05 p.m. Voth (2-2, 3.57) vs. Alexander (0-1, 5.92)
Harrisburg Postponed OFF DAY N/A
Potomac Cancelled OFF DAY N/A
Hagerstown Lost, 3-2 (11 inn.) @ Augusta, 7:05 p.m. Alastre (2-2, 6.84) vs. Corry (0-1, 1.83)

Las Vegas 11 Fresno 2
• Sanchez (L, 0-1) 2IP, 8H, 8R, 8ER, BB, 2K, HR
• Bacus 1IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 0K
• J. Wilson 2-4, R, 2B, 3B
• Hernandez 1-3, BB
• B. Gonzalez 0-3; 1IP, 1H, 0R, BB, 0K

Las Vegas left little doubt as to the outcome of this one as the Aviators scored six in the 1st and in each of the first five innings for an 11-2 smackdown. Mario Sanchez was strafed for eight runs on eight hits and a walk over two innings to lose his AAA debut. Henderson Alvarez3 lowered his ERA with four innings of three-run mop-up duty before Dakota Bacus and Bengie Gonzalez stopped the bender with a scoreless inning apiece. Jacob Wilson doubled, tripled, and scored a run while Yadiel Hernandez reached base twice to lead the Grizzlies’ counterstrike. Roster moves: IF Jake Noll recalled to Washington; UT Chris Dominguez assigned from XST.

Harrisburg vs. Trenton – PPD
The Senators and Thunder were rained out yesterday afternoon. They’ll make it up next week when Trenton comes back to City Isle.

Potomac vs. Winston-Salem – CNCLD
Make it five games lost through 16 home dates as rain washed away the rest of the series between the Dash and the P-Nats. Neither game will be made because the two teams do not meet again during the first half.

Augusta 3 Hagerstown 2 (11 inn.)
• Peguero 6IP, 3H, R, ER, 0BB, 4K, HR
• Guillen 2IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 1K
• Fletcher (L, 1-2) 2⅓ IP, 2H, 2R, 0ER, 0BB, 1K, BK
• Pineda 1-4, R, BB
• Vickers 1-4, RBI
• 1-for-11 RISP, 7 LOB

The GreenJackets scored in both extra innings to edge the Suns, 3-2. Francys Peguero tossed his third straight quality start and was rewarded with his third straight no-decision. After Angel Guillen went two scoreless innings, Aaron Fletcher put up a goose egg in the 9th but gave up one-out RBI singles in both the 10th and 11th innings for his second loss. Jacob Rhinesmith doubled while Israel Pineda and Trey Vickers both singled to account for all three (3) Hagerstown hits.

So now that we’re a week into May, I’d have thought we’d have seen the full pitching carousel put into action by now. There’s a ton of old-for-the-level arms wasting away in A ball right now.

Fresno, Out: Alvarez, Dragmire, Hoover, Copeland
    Fresno, Down: Cordero

Harrisburg, Up (to Fresno or DC): Condra-Bogan, Bourque, Crowe, Barrett
    Harrisburg, Down: R. Pena

Potomac, Up: Fuentes, Bartow, Andrew Lee (unless they’re committed to re-converting him to a SP, then he should get more starts in Potomac)
    Potomac, Down: Raquet, McKinney
    Potomac, Out: Reyes

Hagerstown, Up: Fletcher, Cate, German, Peguero, Stoeckinger, Guillen
    Hagerstown, Down/Out: Brasher, Alastre

Raised from the dead: Istler, Schaller, Chu, Karp, Evan Lee

Add Alex Troop too to the revivification list.

        Lazerus list.
Some want Menhart to tweet the way Tampa Bay has imploded their pen

Cue the opening sound effects from Pink Floyd s song Money
The Lerners are loving the Dollar General savings from not retaining Harper. Yeah they spent $$$$ o the roster but as Cane said before : the season happened . Here we are. Where is the Cuban YH on a flight to Milwaukee ? Spencer and Carter cause for another Upper Deck special card in their late season set update ?
We need Crash Davis managing the Nats. Crash is presently in Fresno running a club .
Maybe it’s time for Gushue’s bat on the bench
If this club reaches 15 games under .500. Time for Crash Knorr in the dugout .

Can’t really argue with any of that. Henderson Alvarez sure looks done.
Luke reinforced my posts on Jacob Wilson and Yadiel. Carter Kieboom needs a lot more seasoning on the farm.

What about Chris Vann. Never give up on a lefty is a good motto .
Remember the Lazerus story of Jeff Fassero from White Sox farmhand to expo Minor league free agent signee to one of the best lefties in MLB period .
Some of us are looking forward to the additions found in June Amateur draft and Intl signing deadline .

Bullpen demotion vs promotion / demotion carnival ride takes longer than we think.

The missing Istler remains a mystery, particularly for a team starved for relief help. Also weird/frustrating that Schaller — a 3d-round pick — isn’t ready for full-season ball. I had heard that Troop was pitching in WPB during the spring so presumably is ready, or nearly so. Perhaps he was kept in XST to reduce his innings.

It will be interesting to see if there’s an unexpected promotion or two to the big club now that Menhart is the PC, since he knows the arms of the organization so well.

We can’t s any worse with Nuno Copeland or Barrett at this point. Wander. A word fitting the bullpen location and control

Maybe Menhart waiting on Williams to get off DL?? Or would a healthy Istler be more crucial for brass??

    1. peric says:

Seems pretty clear Rizzo is frustrated trying to develop bullpen types in his system. He’s taking his 2 top starters and turning them into bullpen pieces simultaneously. If those two can adapt and be effective all he needs is for Rosenthal to finish his Ulnar Collateral ligament reconstruction rehab and they could potentially have 3 stop BP types on the right side … plus the three lefties (Jennings, Sipp, and Doolittle) would give the six. One more needed … that should be Kimbrel … and then they might have fixed their problem.

But what happens when a starter goes down? Pretty high risk. 140 million just for 4 starting pitchers seems thrown out the window with that bucket of baby bath water.

Some of us will just be surprised by which path brass takes with the injuries reactions , retooling and surprise addition (s).
Why not add a Parra in the next week??

Watching Neil Ramirez hit 96 gas for Tribe versus Chisox.
Would he have been buried in Fresno too if he re upped this spring with Nats
