Las Vegas 9 Fresno 8
• Espino 4IP, 8H, 7R, 7ER, BB, 3K, 3HR
• Hoover 3IP, 0H, 0R, 2BB, 4K
• Rainey (BS, 3; L, 1-1) ⅔ IP, 2H, 2R, 2ER, 3BB, 1K
• Keller 3-5, 2R, RBI
• Stevenson 3-5, R
• Kieboom 2-3, 2BB, 3RBI
After the offense came back from a 7-0 deficit to take an 8-7 lead, a hard-throwing right-hander with control problems blew it in the 8th. No, Jimmy Cordero didn’t pitch again… No, Trevor Rosenthal wasn’t on rehab… No, Joan Baez wasn’t promoted… It was Tanner Rainey’s turn to notch the blown save (his third in four appearances) as he gave up the tying and winning runs in the 8th for a 9-8 Grizzlies loss. Matt Reynolds was the beer man as Fresno pounded out 15 hits, led by Alec Keller and Andrew Stevenson, who both went 3-for-5 while Carter Kieboom reached base four times with a pair of singles and two walks.
Harrisburg 4 Bowie 2
• Sharp (W, 1-1) 5IP, 7H, 2R, 2ER, BB, 3K
• Bourque (SV, 1) 2IP, 1H, 0R, 2BB, 3K
• Ward 1-4, R, HR(GS), 4RBI
• Barrera 1-3, 2B, BB
Sterling Sharp was good enough and Drew Ward was grand as the Senators won for the eighth time in nine games, 4-2 over the BaySox. Sharp turned in five innings of two-run ball on seven hits and a walk while striking out three to pick up the win. Mario Sanchez and Ronald Pena each put up goose for their first hold while James Bourque put on three baserunners in two innings but struck out three to notch the save. Ward’s grand slam with two outs in the 3rd was one of just four hits on the night for Harrisburg, which also drew four walks.
Potomac 6 Winston-Salem 3
• Tetreault (W, 2-0) 5IP, 4H, R, ER, 3BB, 4K
• Fuentes 2IP, 1H, R, ER, 2BB, 4K, WP, HBP
• Agustin 2-4, R, 2B, BB, RBI
• Corredor 2-5, 2B, 3RBI
• Meregildo 1-3, R, 2B, BB, RBI, 2K
Potomac jumped out to a 2-0 early then pushed it to 6-1 lead with a four-run 4th which the bullpen held to stop a four-game losing streak. Jackson Tetreault won for the second time in as many starts as he spun five innings of one-run ball on four hits and three walks while fanning four. A.J. Bogucki and Steven Fuentes both gave up a run over two innings to finish the game. Telmito Agustin and Aldrem Corredor combined for four hits and four RBI as the P-Nats squeezed their six runs from eight hits and five walks without an error or a hit batsman.
Hagerstown vs. Asheville – PPD
Rain, which washed out 15 home games and six road games last season, “won” its first against the Suns as it forced the first postponement of 2019. They’ll shoot to make it up this afternoon with a twinbill.
The Nats need a BP guy with Miller going on the IL. If you were Rizzo, who would you call up?
Adams. He’s been great thus far, already on the 40-man, and didn’t pitch last night. Cordero, Rainey, and Williams have all struggled thus far. Hoover or Copeland would require a 40-man move, and I don’t think either has an option left.
Barrett might also be another possibility, although he’s also not on the 40-man.
A sidebar comment. Nothing against Brady Dragmire but is he just eating innings in F trooop while PD spotlight focus on Crowe and Sharp @ short cell call out in Burg??
It’s Austen Williams who gets the call. Hopefully he can do better in D.C. than he’s done in Fresno.
Tanner Rainey has not impressed me one bit. It’s him, Cordero, and Adrian Sanchez slugging it out to avoid the DFA when the Nats recall Carter Kieboom and/or Aaron Barrett.
Don’t see Rizzo DFAing one of his prize off-season acquisitions. That would mean acknowledging yet another mistake. You can’t teach 100 MPH, he would say.
Realistically, I’m not sure what value Adrian Sanchez has on the 40-man. He’s out of options after this season, and with Jake Noll and soon Carter Kieboom on the roster, he’s redundant. Plus I’m sure he’d clear waivers, if that’s our concern.
Rainey and Cordero throw hard, but they’re also baaaaaaad.
Nuke LaRoosh legend lives
Sanchez is a close ally to Rizzo. Possibly future
Org guy as coach or scout
Turn about is fair play. Give Archer a ND after Corbin had one last night
Non bullpen comment. Last night Keister played Meregildo in the OF. Tonight Freeman in RF. DHs cause that necessity .
Sanchez was personally scouted and signed by Mr Rizzo when Sanchez still switch hit
Sanchez is SS-capable, while Noll isn’t. Still, they’ve got Reynolds available at AAA who can play SS and who is a better hitter than Sanchez. He just can’t be optioned if brought up.
A little surprised by the Austen Williams call-up, although he was great in the spring. I thought he deserved to make the club out of the spring over Suero.
Really, prime bullpen jobs are wide open right now for anyone who is willing/able to step up and seize them.
Sunday meditation.
5 errors on the farm, Cane
Interesting only 1 by Suns in a DH. 2 each @ AAA @ AA
