Nationals Name 2019 Farm Managers, Coaches

January 12, 2019

Yesterday, the Nationals announced its 2019 managers and coaches for 2019:

Affiliate Manager Pitching Coach Hitting Coach
Fresno Randy Knorr Brad Holman Brian Daubach
Harrisburg Matthew LeCroy Michael Tejera Brian Rupp
Potomac Tripp Keister Sam Narron Luis Ordaz
Hagerstown Patrick Anderson Mac Jenkins Amaury Garcia
Auburn Ralph “Rocket” Wheeler Franklin Bravo Mark Harris
GCL Mario Lisson Larry Pardo Jorge Mejia
DSL Sandy Martinez Pablo Frias Freddy Guzman

Bold = New to the organization

As you can see from the lack of italics, no one has been reassigned and there are just two new names: Mac Jenkins and Rocket Wheeler.

Jenkins had been player or coach in the Cincinnati Reds organization since 1986 but was shown the door last April along with manager Bryan Price. He returns to the minors where he was a pitching coach from 1990 to 2005.

Wheeler is a name that should be familiar to P-Nats fans as the manager of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans from 2006 to 2010 during his 16-year stint with the Atlanta Braves. He returns to the NYPL where he was a manager for two seasons (St. Catharines, 1996-97) and a player (Utica, 1977).

We now return you to your January malaise…

    Lerners love those Atlanta ties.
I have a picture of Rocket from my WPB spring trip trip in the last few years.
    Jenkins nice addition.
Luke. State secrets slowly released this January .
Those Minor league contract signatures taking awhile to be
    Accumulated and processed

      Where did Tim Redding go?
Interesting if Nats grabbed onto Ian Clarkin off White Sox DFA from Herrrera signing for Fresno and Knorr

Clarkin is an interesting guy. But Rizzo hasn’t claimed anyone off waivers in…oh, I dunno, seven years?

Anyone interested in playing in Fresno? Not me. Not me. Not me. Not me.

I believe what’s happening now is the same thing that happened last offseason: until the MLB free agency glut is “settled” with a bunch of one-year or below-market-value contracts, the minor-leaguers who would otherwise populate the AAA roster and plug the gaps in AA will have to wait.

Luke and associates: in my airline travels this weekend I crossed paths with Dallas Greens son John Dallas Green who now toils as Dodger National Crosschecker. Very conversational.
I will keep privy the amateur talent he was viewing on his I-pad, but the one topic which he laughed about was my mentioning how Hagerstown Memorial Stadium hasnt changed much since he played there especially the Marlboro sign now camaflouged with Pepsi colors.
He did mention how talented UCLA is this season so ….

One would have expected the Nats to add Tyler Matzek to the F troop far west outpost

Peric. Bet you a plug nickel that Nats retain some faithful hands like
Dan Gamache , Austin Davidson. Drew Ward. Drew Carey lol.
Chris Dominguez and Moises Sierra jobless ??

Maybe an arm picked up off the orphan wire is the Panamanian RHP Dario Granazal who could eat some AA IPs for Senators.

Tejera seemed to work wonders with some guys at Harrisburg last season, particularly McGowin and Austen Williams. It will be interesting to see what he can do with Crowe and Sharp over a more extended period.

    1. Jeff says:
      January 8, 2019 at 9:20 pm

Mac Jenkins is a huge hire to mentor the NCAA arms from last June’s drafts along with Tomas Alastre
Jenkins resume could have him in farm pitching coordinator but Menhart has that gig.

      1. Jeff says:
        January 8, 2019 at 9:31 pm

Snyder back with Nats answers my question about whether Noll toils @ AA or AAA. He lends some pop from right side along with Gushue , Wilson, Reynolds ( if he is not DFAd for another 40 man roster body ). Severino, S. Kieboom..

        1. KW says:
          January 9, 2019 at 8:58 am

Matt Reynolds is out of options, so he figures to be DFA’d at some point. I’m sure the Nats hope they can keep him as depth, though.

Which Snyder are you referring to? Brandon? Also, what is the best website to get info on minor league signings? Thx.

KW. Even better. Could Tejera tweak something improved on Crownover ? Healthy Bourne pitches @ Potomac or AA??

      1. peric says:
        January 8, 2019 at 11:07 pm

Left handed arm … and as always they are short of those. 29 year old Bryan Harper returning to AA/AAA or is it contingent on a Bryce return?

      2. KW says:
        January 9, 2019 at 9:15 am

Jeff, if you had predicted at this time last year that Austen Williams would get an MLB cup of coffee in 2018 after dominating in the minors, we would have wanted to know what you’ve been smoking. There will be several slightly aging guys with good arms at AA this season, including Crownover, Borne, Guilbeau, Mills, Braymer, and Bourque. No one talks about Hayden Howard or A. J. Bogucki, but they both had solid seasons in 2018, as did trade return Jacob Condra-Bogan. All have been a bit “old for the level,” but Williams and McGowin showed that it’s never too late to find something that works. On the flipside, Fuentes may get pushed onto Harrisburg as well, even though he won’t turn 22 until May.

Also, that’s a very good point about Mac Jenkins and all the 2017-18 college-drafted pitchers. That’s a key spot for development/progression right now.

        1. peric says:
          January 9, 2019 at 12:34 pm

4 southpaws in your mix and one would think they would know there’s a stark shortage on the cusp of the majors. But, its a southpaw starter they need to replace Jesus Luzardo and Seth Romero.

          1. KW says:
            January 9, 2019 at 3:05 pm

I count six portsiders among the ones I mentioned — Crownover, Borne, Guilbeau, Mills, Braymer, and Howard. I don’t know that any of them will end up as starters. Most have been multi-inning relievers, though.

        2. Jeff says:
          January 9, 2019 at 5:28 pm

KW. Do so agree on Fuentes. So many bullpen arms for AA.

        3. Jeff says:
          January 11, 2019 at 8:45 am

In my travels I always test people wearing their alma mater’s knits by seeing if they are football fans or baseball fans. I have had a few OU fans flash a smile wen Irwin’s name is mentioned. But of course finding a Texas A&M baseball fan vs a football fan is like trying to find an immaculately cleaned mens room @ Royal Farms. LOL.
Nats karma says brass should see some results from several NCAA arms. I am crossing fingers on Tomas Alastre, Pena and even that Cat Felix Taveres.
Not to harp on somebodies contribution, but can one read between the lines that brass wanted a pitching guru reaching resonance with more kids thus Redding gone and Mac-the knife- Jenkins in?

  3. Jeff says:

As in checkers : the double jumper this season might be Jackson Tetreault

    1. SaoMagnifico says:
      January 9, 2019 at 10:55 pm

Tetreault and Aaron Fletcher (34:4 K/BB in his first pro season) are tops on my watchlist for less heralded low-minors pitchers this year. I think fourth-rounder Jake Irvin flies this year, too, and I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see him finish the year in Potomac or even with a cup of coffee in Harrisburg.

Among the relievers we’ve amassed at the higher levels, obviously we have 40-man guys like Rainey, Williams, and Bourque who could make the jump, but do not sleep on midseason pickups Jacob Condra-Bogan (53:6 K/BB over 42 innings last year, throws 96-97 mph) and Andrew Istler (0.89 WHIP over 79 2/3 innings in the Dodgers organization last year, all in hitter-friendly leagues). Istler is basically MLB-ready now, and Condra-Bogan probably makes his Eastern League debut to start out the season; I wouldn’t be surprised to see both throw a few frames at big boy camp in February/March.

      1. KW says:
        January 10, 2019 at 10:24 am

Completely agree on Fletcher and Irvin as starters to watch from the 2018 draft who could be fast movers. There was some speculation that Irvin could be a second-round pick until he struggled in the NCAA tourney and dropped to the 4th. Fletcher was the Friday starter (his first season starting) for a team that made the NCAA tourney but presumably dropped in the draft because of age (RS JR because of TJ), “bad body,” and a K/9 of only 7.44. He then went out and posted a K/9 just a tick under 10 at Auburn.

The draftee who already concerns me is Cate. I liked his profile when he was picked, but he struggled at Auburn, got pushed to Hags, and continued to struggle. He was only 20 when drafted, though (Sept. birthday), so he’s got a little time cushion developmentally speaking.

    2. Natsguy says:
      January 21, 2019 at 11:01 pm

Jeff, you got it right! This kid Tetreault, since being drafted in 2017 has an MILB 3.75 ERA in 173 inn with 178Ks, a four pitch repertoire with a plus fastball and curve/cutter. He’s got a young arm with only 160 innings over 1 year of high school, 1 year D2, and 1 year of JUCO. The Braves had him on there board to take in the 5th, but could not because of overpaying the upper picks. He’s also a young 22 with the body of an 18 year old and a very late physical bloomer. At a lean 6’5 and wiry strong, “JT” Tetreault has been working out the whole off-season at the Nationals training center and 2019 should be a big year for him.

Now that Matt Reynolds has been DFAd .
    A concensus question :
Fresno or Harrisburg assignments in April for these guys : Noll, Davidson , Keller, .

So if Harper goes to Philly and Rendon re- signs , then will we see the two old friends unite in philly next season ? Bryant and 34?

Interesting movie that was done on Moe Berg the spy .

The book (1994) was the must see/read.

    2. KW says:
      January 15, 2019 at 10:49 am

I would guess that there’s some likelihood that Matt Reynolds will pass through waivers and accept the outright, so I wouldn’t color him gone yet. The plus with him is that he’s SS-capable, although Sanchez supposedly is as well. That said, there are zillions of guys out there with similar skills.

I’ve already rattled on many times before about the curious situation where the Nats seem to think more highly of Noll (.687 OPS at AA) than Davidson (.846 OPS at AA). Keller is a very good hitter for contact (.823 OPS at AA, and .379 OBP despite only 14 walks), but he’s a corner OF with no HR power and not much speed, so his ceiling seems pretty limited. He’s pretty much the inverse of Michael Taylor, who has power and speed but very little contact.

KW. Sanchez and Reynolds on F troop loyal soldiers versus signing some AAA suitcase Joe

  6. Jeff says:
    January 15, 2019 at 10:30 am

Fresno f troop casting call for free agents might end up being calling on loyal org guys like Norfork , Noll, Reynolds ( if not flipped away ), Davidson then sign several AA free agents to join the kids in Burg
Garcia could earn Burg April slip with good spring camp plus maybe CarterK to F troop for several months ??

    1. LM says:
      January 15, 2019 at 10:59 am

I heard Norfolk will be moving on to the coaching ranks this year. Also, I hope Davidson gets assigned to Fresno as he’s a California kid. Will be interesting to see if Harrisburg is really AAA East. I would think C Keiboom will start in HBG since he only had a couple months there in 2018. Nats history supports that.

      1. Jeff says:
        January 15, 2019 at 1:31 pm

LM. Player coach AA. Norfork Burg?
Still think Gamache returns. How does one phonetically pronounce Dan’s name ?

        1. LM says:
          January 15, 2019 at 2:25 pm

Norfolk – Probably in Florida with the young guys. Gamache – Ga MOSH. Like a mosh pit.

          1. Jeff says:

Ty LM. That means senators need a utility guy with R/R to go with Jones in OF
