DRAFT DAY TWO
TL; DR – the Nats drafted a bunch of pitchers and a 23-y.o. second baseman. Find out more about them here, before they’re traded to the Oakland A’s.

Charlotte 4 Syracuse 1
• Vargas (L, 1-6) 5+ IP, 5H, 4R, 4ER, 4BB, 5K, HR
• Smith 2IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 2K
• Wilson 2-4
• Decker 1-3, R, HR, BB, RBI

Syracuse picked up where they left off on Sunday: barely avoiding a shutout and losing for the third consecutive game, 4-1 to Charlotte. Cesar Vargas did not register a quality start for the seventh time in 11 starts and lost for the sixth time with all four Knights runs charged to him on five hits and four walks over five-plus innings. Chris Smith and Jimmy Cordero combined for three scoreless innings of relief but the offense, as aforementioned, was limited to four hits (two by Jacob Wilson). Jaff Decker’s solo HR broke up the shutout in the 7th.

Harrisburg 6 Binghamton 5
• Dragmire 5⅓ IP, 9H, 5R, 4ER, BB, 6K
• Self (W, 2-1) 1IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 1K
• Murphy 2-4, 2R, 2B, BB, 2E(5,6)
• Abreu 2-4
• Gushue 2-5, R, RBI

Taylor Gushue’s RBI single capped off a two-run 9th as the Senators walked off the Rumble Ponies, 6-5. Brady Dragmire got the start but was riddled for nine hits and five Binghamton runs on nine hits and a walk over five and a 1/3rd innings. He struck out six, including the first of two Tim Tebow whiffs (nos. 69 & 70 in 48G). Kaleb Fleck, Bryan Harper, and Derek Self opened up a donut shop on the top half of the scoreboard with Self getting the win for a scoreless 9th. Gushue, Daniel Murphy, and Osvaldo Abreu accounted for six of the 12 Harrisburg hits. Roster moves: UT Khayyan Norfork placed on the 7-Day DL; RHP Luis Reyes placed on the 7-Day DL, retroactive to June 3; RHP Wirkin Estevez activated from the 7-Day DL.

Potomac 15 Frederick 0
• Mapes (W, 4-1) 7IP, 3H, 0R, 0BB, 6K
• Braymer 2IP, 2H, 0R, 0BB, 1K
• Noll 3-5, 2R, HR(GS), 5RBI
• Eaton 2-5, 2R, HR, 3RBI
• Keller 2-4, 2R, 3B, 3RBI

Tyler Mapes and Ben Braymer combined on a five-hit shutout while Potomac defenestrated five Frederick pitchers for 16 hits in a 15-0 shutout. Mapes allowed just three hits and struck out six while going seven full innings for the first time since Sept. 3, 2016. Ben Braymer mopped up with two scoreless innings and gave up two hits. Neither pitcher issued a walk. Every starter notched a hit, led by Jake Noll who singled twice and hit a grand slam. Adam Eaton also went deep (clearing all three levels of signage in RF) and drove in three, but looked tentative at times on the basepaths. Roster moves: 1B Ian Sagdal activated from the 7-Day DL; OF Adam Eaton assigned from Washington for MLB rehab.

Hagerstown – PPD
The Suns were rained out yet again. They’ll shoot to make it up tonight with a doubleheader. Earlier in the day, Hagerstown announced that its two Nicks (Banks and Raquet) and manager Patrick Anderson will be making the trip to Greensboro for the 2018 Sally Lg. All-Star Game. Roster moves: IF Branden Boggetto reassigned from Potomac; IF Anderson Franco placed on the 7-Day DL.

Bravo to Mapes for a strong comeback this year. He’s about to turn 27, so the clock is ticking very fast on him, but he has a career 2.60 ERA. Perhaps time to get him back to AA.

Three of the P-Nat runs were off of rehabbing major-leaguer Darren O’Day.

Seth Romero has been assigned to Hagerstown. Hope he has controversy free three months in Single A.

This feels like his last chance with the Nats organization.

SEC has six teams in super regionals; no other conference has more than two. That league seems a cut above in baseball as well as football.

Jeff, U of H draftee Fletcher is a big dude. I wonder if he still has a beef with Romero!

Nats GM thinks he might go back to Cougars. As the lady for Wendy’s said in the 80s. Where’s the beef??
Auburn should have some WD40 for the locker room door cause many guys will be getting
            Processed this summer.
I recall watching Papa Tapani pitches the Bash Bros in 89-92.
            More grey hairs pop out.
Gil, not much Texas love this draft . Quiet year for Jimmy Gonzalez scout

Another lefty which brings mixed responses. On the heel S of the draft Nats face A Suarez who brass let go back to UMiami so Fedde could be signed. Right, Gil and Luke ??
Great job Luke through the wet weeks

  3. Jeff says:
    June 6, 2018 at 11:02 pm

Luke, I noticed a whole new crew in DSL with many from last summer lumped on the XST/ TBD list especially Sanfler, Porte, Beninconse and Sosa. They had their chance now it’s wait for a pink slip?

  4. Jeff says:

O’Conner same school as Jonathan Reid LHP
Rhinesmith Western Kentucky as Phillip Dietrich .
