Editor’s note: I’ll be in Boston for a conference for the rest of the work week, so coverage–especially tomorrow and Saturday–may be limited.

Syracuse – OFF DAY
Syracuse starts August deep in the I.L. North cellar, with a tragic number of seven. While they have a significant lead for the worst record in the International League, they’re ahead of Las Vegas on percentage points and a half-game ahead of New Orleans for the worst record in all of AAA. Roster move: C Pedro Severino optioned from Washington.

Harrisburg – OFF DAY
The Senators also find themselves looking up at the rest of the division and looking back on just the Fisher Cats for the worst record in the Eastern League. While reaching .500 would require a 1914 Braves-like finish of 26-8, fifth place is in reach (two games behind the Flying Squirrels) while they’re three games behind (ahead of?) the Birmingham Barons for the worst record in AA.

Potomac 5 Lynchburg 2
• Williams (W, 2-3) 6IP, 4H, R, ER, 3BB, 8K, WP
• Orlan (SV, 4) 3IP, 1H, 1R, 0ER, 0BB, 4K
• Sundberg 2-2, R
• Sagdal 2-4, R, 2B, 2RBI
• Mejia 2-3, R, 2B

Potomac’s four-run 6th answered Lynchburg’s tally in the same frame as they took the opener, 5-2. Austen Williams and R.C. Orlan did precisely what AA-experienced pitchers are supposed to do: dominate. Williams threw six innings of one-run ball on four hits and three walks while striking out eight for the win. Orlan let in an unearned run over the final three innings while striking out four for the save. Jack Sundberg came off the bench to single twice while Ian Sagdal went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI to lead the P-Nats’ attack. Roster move: OF Michael Taylor assigned from Washington for MLB rehab.

Hickory 16 Hagerstown 4
• Howard (L, 4-1) 1⅔ IP, 7H, 9R, 0ER, BB, K, 0HR
• Agustin 3-5, R, 3B, 2RBI
• Corredor 2-5, RBI

The CrawDads missed two extra points but got two touchdowns in the 2nd as they eclipsed the Suns, 16-4. Hayden Howard took the loss as he was charged with nine unearned runs on seven hits and a walk over an inning and 2/3rds. Telmito Agustin singled twice, tripled once, and drove in two while Aldrem Corredor went 2-for-5 with an RBI to lead the Hagerstown hitters. Roster move: LHP Tyler Watson traded to the Minnesota Twins.

State College 9 Auburn 2
• Y. Ramirez (L, 2-3) 5⅔ IP, 10H, 4R, 3ER, 0BB, 1K
• A. Martinez 2-3, R, 2B, BB
• Esthay 2-5

State College rallied from a 2-0 deficit with a pair of three-run innings as they demolished Auburn, 9-2. Yonathan Ramirez suffered the loss on four runs allowed on ten hits over five and 2/3rds innings. Andres Martinez walked, singled, and doubled while Kameron Esthay singled twice to pace the Doubledays offense.

GCL Nationals – OFF DAY
The G-Nats are riding a seven-game win streak and are atop the GCL East by three games over the G-Astros. Sunday’s suspended game will indeed be completed on Friday, as previously suggested.

Wow, how did Hagerstown allow nine unearned runs? That sounds like a Little League game!

I did make it out to Dollar Monday at Potomac but only stayed for half the game because of the kids. Austen Williams did look strong, but he should in his third rodeo at Potomac. One note on him is that he is now pitching exclusively from the stretch, like Strasburg. He looked pretty comfortable doing it. However, he was slow to cover first base twice on balls hit to 1B, a bad look for someone so experienced. He also did a poor job holding a runner who had 33 SBs, who took #34 without a throw.

Daniel Johnson’s hit came after we left. In the two ABs I saw, he was struggling to stay balanced against a “crafty lefty” and took some ugly swings. Of course so did Michael Taylor, who struck out swinging his second time up after lining to right in his first AB.

Skole granted his release. He never regained the magic of 2012 after the injury in 2013, as well as all but skipping Potomac. It’s a faint memory now, but it seemed that the Nats rushed him in part because of some hope that he could be ready to replace LaRoche. Of course Goodwin was supposed to be ready to replace Span . . .

Anyway, good luck to Skole. In an organization that isn’t so stacked at the big-league level, he may end up getting his cup of coffee one day.

Had Skole just remained healthy and repeated his performance from a year ago, he likely would have been rewarded with a September call up this year. Given that he’ll turn 29 next season he doesn’t have much time left, especially if he is unable to return to the field this year. His career is a stark reminder of just how hard it is even for decent prospects to make the majors, especially if they don’t play a premium position like middle infield, catcher or LHP.

I have sympathy for the uniform
Guy in Syracuse . Emil Rogers makes how many bodies through AAA???

Daniel Johnson didn’t even have his name on his uniform as of Monday night, despite a couple of weeks at Potomac already.

They don’t have the same seamstress as they used to, but in fairness, that’s one of several unis the P-Nats have. Personally, I think they should have guys like Johnson wear a jersey with just “New Guy” on the back until they get that done 😉

Granted the club was on road when Johnson went up to a plus .
Emil Rogers involved in a few trades especially with Yankees

Sheesh? And top prospect Soto with hamate surgery? The kid has yet to fail to be “hitterish” at any level guess we’ll see how he does next season.

        Braves will pick him up
As Bob trumpey always said on his radio show on WLW: I bet you a hot fudge sundae !!

Am I the only one thinking this : Armond Upshaw has too much raw tools to sit untapped without extra instruction from an Otis Nixon type besides Gary Thurman and Mark Harris ??

Skole? Big, judicious left-handed bat with the high OBP? I’d guess the Philthies first. White Sox.
