Pawtucket 6 Syracuse 1 – GAME ONE
• G. Ross (L, 2-4) 4⅓ IP, 5H, 4R, 3ER, 2BB, 2K, HR, HBP
• Suero ⅔ IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 2K, 2-0 IR-S
• Snyder 1-2, 2B, BB
• Falu 1-3, R
A wild pitch is all that stood between the Chiefs another shutout, as the Paw Sox had to settle for 6-1 win instead. Greg Ross was clawed for four runs on five hits and two walks over four and a 1/3rd innings in his fourth AAA loss. Brandon Snyder walked and doubled while Irving Falu, who singled ahead of Snyder (yes, they got both hits in the same inning) scored on the WP. The rest of the Syracuse lineup was 0-for-16.
Pawtucket 3 Syracuse 0 – GAME TWO
• McGowin (L, 1-5) 6IP, 6H, 3R, 3ER, BB, 5K
• Snyder 1-3
• Robinson 1-2, HBP
No such luck in the nightcap as Pawtucket was able to get the two-hit shutout, 3-0. Kyle McGowin went the distance and allowed all three Pawtucket runs on six hits and a walk while striking out five. Brandon Snyder and Clint Robinson both singled while Irving Falu, Andrew Stevenson, and Mario Lisson each drew a walk.
Altoona 5 Harrisburg 3
• Long (L, 5-5) 6⅓ IP, 8H, 5R, 4ER, 0BB, 2K, 2HR, WP
• Robinson 1IP, 0H, 0R, BB, 2K
• Marmolejos 3-4, R
• Joseph 1-3, R, HR, BB, 2RBI
Harrisburg rallied for three in the 7th to make it look good, but Altoona took the game, 5-3. Jaron Long pitched into the 7th but gave up all five Curve runs on eight hits, including an Earl Weaver special to the last batter he faced, over six and a 1/3rd innings. He walked none and struck out two. Four relievers combined to get the last eight outs. Jose “Orange” Marmolejos led the Sens hit column with three singles while Corbin Joseph homered and walked to lead the seven-hit, two-walk offense.
Potomac – OFF DAY
A four-game sweep by the Keys has put the P-Nats firmly in fifth place in the Carolina League North. The Woodbridge nine returns home for seven games – four against the Wood ducks, three against the Astros – before closing out the first half with four on the road against the Mudcats.
Hagerstown 6 Greensboro 0
• Sharp (W, 3-3) 6IP, 3H, 0R, BB, 4K
• Fuentes (SV, 1) 3IP, 3H, 0R, 0BB, 4K, HBP
• Franco 2-3, R
• Barrera 2-4, R
• Johnson 1-4, R, HR, 3RBI
Sterling Sharp showed no rust as he combined with Steven Fuentes on a six-hit shutout of Greensboro, 6-0. Sharp went the first six and allowed three hits and a walk while winning his third game. Fuentest closed it out and worked around three hits and a HBP for his first save. Both pitchers struck out four. All-Star Daniel Johnson connected for his league-leading 12th homer and drove in three while Anderson Franco and Tres Barrera both singled twice to lead the Suns attack. Roster moves: RHP Sterling Sharp activated from 3-Day TIL; C Tres Barrera activated from the 7-Day DL; RHP Mick VanVossen traded to White Sox to complete Ryan Raburn trade.
I’m not the first to say this, but it’s time some of these Hagerstown players get promoted to Potomac.
Johnson is the most obvious candidate. He turns 22 in a couple weeks, which is pretty old for the Sally League. Same with Sterling Sharp, who’s just a few weeks older. Maybe also M. Mills once he’s healthy again.
Given his age, I don’t mind Watson remaining in Hagerstown longer than the others.
Unfortunately, beyond these guys (plus Soto and Kieboom) there isn’t much relief coming to the upper levels for a very long time.
What is the nature McKenzie Mills’ injury?
Missed that.
How weird is it that the Nats’ #2 prospect that he doesn’t even rate a mention (and perhaps rightly so) in Luke’s write-ups? For the record, it appears that Fedde threw only three pitches, all of which were put into play, two of which resulted in outs. I think we’re now past the Super Two date, so if Joe Ross struggles again in his start tonight, could we see Fedde called up as a long man/prospective fifth starter?
Orange was in LF again. It’s definitely a “thing” now.
The Sally League all-star game is June 20, so I assume Dan Johnson will be promoted after that.
Sharp is looking like a pretty darn good 22d-round pick, isn’t he? Of course Sundberg is a 26th-round pick from last year who is already playing at Potomac.
Fedde gave up a single and got a quick double play in 2/3 of an inning. I think Luke does a good job in letting performance over pedigree determine who gets written up.
Of course, I’m here to ask why Robles is a scratch for Potomac again. No word of injury. Any chance he’s getting a promotion?
Not in tonight’s lineup either.
Sharp came up with a funky pitch into his arsenal I heard
Thanks.
