Syracuse – OFF DAY
Chiefs return home after a 1-5 road trip to host the PawSox for three before heading back out for three this weekend against the RailRiders.
Roster moves: OF Andrew Stevenson promoted from Harrisburg; RHP Joe Ross optioned from Washington.
Trenton 7 Harrisburg 0
• Fedde (L, 1-3) 3⅔ IP, 8H, 6R, 6ER, 3BB, 2K
• Cordero 2IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 1K
• Collier 2-2, 2BB
• Ward 1-3, BB
Whether it’s the curse of the GBI or the League adjusting back, Erick Fedde was knocked out in the 4th as Trenton thundered past Harrisburg for a 7-0 shutout. Fedde was charged with six runs, all earned, on eight hits and three walks over three and 2/3rds innings. He struck out two. Jimmy Cordero was somehow perfect for two innings in relief. Zach Collier singled twice and walked twice, Drew Ward once apiece. The rest of the Senators lineup was 1-for-25. Roster move: OF Isaac Ballou assigned from Extended Spring Training.
Down East 3 Potomac 2
• Reyes (L, 1-4) 6IP, 6H, 3R, 2ER, 0BB, 7K, HR
• Pantoja 2IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 2K
• Gushue 2-4, 2R, 2HR, 2RBI, PB(3)
• Sundberg 1-3, BB, E(1)
Taylor Gushue homered twice but the P-Nats struggled otherwise in a 3-2 loss to Down East. Luis Reyes lost for the fourth time despite turning in a quality start of three runs (two earned) allowed on six hits over six innings. He walked none and struck out seven. Jorge Pantoja put just one Duck on the pond (what, you thought I was going to pass that one up?) over two scoreless innings to keep things close. Jack Sundberg was the only other Potomac hitter to reach base twice, as they struck out 12 times and went 0-for-7 with RISP, including Victor Robles with two out in the 9th. Roster move: OF Victor Robles activated from 7-Day DL; OF Dale Carey placed on the 7-Day DL.
Hagerstown – OFF DAY
Hagerstown hosts Rome for three games and Hickory for four this week before hitting the road next week for seven games against Rome (3) and Asheville (4).
you’ve got the scoop on Joe Ross. I guess they were satisfied in what they saw from Turner, for now
More likely the were extremely unsatisfied with Ross. He hasn’t looked right since he came back from his injury last year, which is worrisome given that it was now almost 11 months ago.
Isn’t part of the move with Joe Ross the options game? Ross has an option. Turner does not. Hope Ross can have a couple strong starts for Syracuse and be back soon.
Ross was awful the past two starts. If he was pitching well, he’d still be in DC.
The Andrew Stevenson move is intriguing. Definitely grooming him and his high OBP and defense to be up in crunch time.
Certainly intrigued by Stevenson’s promotion, but I believe the true depth chart won’t be revealed until Drew comes off the disabled list. Will it be Difo, Bautista, or Taylor sent down and who gets bumped down from Syracuse?
Shockingly, the Nats recalled AJ Cole from Cuse. Cole’s numbers in 4 AAA starts are disconcerting:
6.63 ERA 19 IP 24 H 10 BB 14 Ks. 34 AAA baserunners in 19 innings. Yikes. A statement on the lack of pitching depth in the organization.
There’s a lot of weirdness to the Ross option. I see Cole as no use to the big club right now. Maybe the point here is just to clear his suspension, maybe to make him more tradeable? I don’t know. Right now, about the only pitcher at Syracuse looking really good is Adams.
We’ll see how this all plays out. I think SD is right that Jacob Turner is out of options, so he would have to be DFA’d to be taken off the 25-man roster. Is he really replacing Ross in the rotation? The handling of Ross all season has been curious, to say the least.
My bet is they haven’t liked what they have seen from Ross going back to the early workouts in ST. He just doesn’t look like the same pitcher he did a year ago. That also would explain the Guthrie debacle.
I sort of get why this may be a legit Ross demotion to AAA (as opposed to the ridiculous Guthrie situation, whatever that was supposed to do). It’s also possible that they’re messing with Ross’s service time, which would not be smooth. I don’t know how many days he’d have to be off the MLB roster for them to reclaim another years.
So I get why Ross is going down, but I don’t get why Cole is coming up, other than to clear the suspension. He struggled in the spring and has struggled in the season, getting hammered a number of times. Of course Cole, Voth, and Hill have all been about equally bad, so there’s no good starter option at ‘Cuse right now. Adams, Martin, and Cotts have all been at least half-decent in the ‘pen.
And, as noted above, Fedde got clocked last night. Oy.
Err, reclaim another “year” of team control, not “years.” I don’t think that’s their main intent, but Rizzo also never misses a trick.
At this point, I’d be more concerned about whether Ross is even a viable MLB starting pitcher than his service time.
His splits are bad, too. Lefthanders were killing him.
The way the Mets are right now, the Nats can do this kind of thing.
He still has to serve his 3 day suspension, so it will be interesting to see if / how AJ actually gets used. It could be that they just want to get that out of the way in case AJ is needed later
