For the second straight series, rain saved the Chiefs from a three-game sweep postponed the series finale. No makeup date has been announced yet.
Hartford 6 Harrisburg 5
• Williams (L, 1-3) ⅔ IP, 5H, 5R, 5ER, BB, K, HR(GS), HBP
• Self 3⅓ IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 3K
• N. Soto 2-4, 2B
• Norfork 2-3, R, 2B
Hartford jumped on Austen Williams for five in the 1st and did not need an, um, insurance run in a 6-1 defeat of Harrisburg. The Yard Goats’ Dom Nunenz connected for a grand slam to highlight the visitors’ opening salvo. Williams let up five hits and a walk in 2/3rds of an inning before he was lifted for a reliever. Derek Self stranded two while getting the last out of the first and then threw three perfect innings of relief. Neftali Solo and Khayyan Norfork both singled and doubled but the rest of the Sens were 2-for-24.
Potomac 4 Lynchburg 3 (11 inn.)
• Silvestre 6IP, 2H, 3R, 3ER, 2BB, 4K, HBP
• Mendez (W, 1-0) 3IP, 1H, 0R, 2BB, 0K
• Sundberg 3-4, R, BB, SB
• Agustin 1-2, R, RBI
The P-Nats rallied for two in the 8th to tie at 3-3 and plated the game winner in the 11th to prevent a three-game sweep by the Hillcats, 4-3. Hector Silvestre let in all three Lynchburg runs on two hits and two walks, but also extended his string of quality starts to four. Gilberto Mendez pitched three scoreless innings of relief for the win. Jack Sundberg singled three times, walked once, and scored once to lead the Potomac attack.
Hagerstown 10 Hickory 9 – GAME ONE
• Watson (W, 1-1) 6IP, 8H, 6R, 6ER, 4BB, 4K, HR
• Johnson 2-4, 2R, 3B, SB
• Kieboom 3-4, 2-2B, 2RBI
• Neuse 2-4, R, HR, 2RBI
Hagerstown outslugged Hickory, 10-9 to take the opener. Tyler Watson got the Jack Morris win with six runs on eight hits and four walks while striking out four. Steven Fuentes had a Treinen time in the 9th as he allowed three runs on five hits. Jake Noll was the beer man in a 13-hit onslaught led by Carter Kieboom’s 3-for-4, two-RBI effort.
Hagerstown 10 Hickory 9 – GAME TWO
• Sharp (L, 0-2) 2⅔ IP, 9H, 8R, 5ER, 0BB, 1K, HBP, 2WP
• Simonds 3IP, 2H, 0R, 0BB, 1K
• Kieboom 1-3, R, HR(6), BB, 2RBI, E(6)
• Franco 0-1, R, 2BB
A seven-run 3rd knocked Sterling Sharp from the box as the Crawdad signed off the Suns, 10-4 in the nightcap to split the doubleheader. Sharp was charged with eight runs (five earned) on nine hits over two and 2/3rds innings. He walked none and struck out one, but hit a batter and threw two wild pitches. Carter Kieboom homered, walked, and drove in two to lead Hagerstown’s six-hit, four-walk offense.
Bets should be placed on double promotion soon on Lora to Sens and Kieboom to Potnats!!
I don’t see the Nats pushing Kieboom right now. He is already 2+ years younger than Sally League average, and the Nats want to confirm that he is a SS rather than a third baseman. Kieboom already has 6 errors in 26 games at SS. Would guess that want Kieboom to settle in and get comfortable for the season.
What a great draft pick Kieboom is turning out to be so far.
With him, Soto, Robles, Feede and Stevenson, what the Nats don’t have in quantity they sure have in quality prospects.
Can’t wait for last year’s top international bonus signings to start cuz i’ve read that they can be exciting ones as well.
Unfortunately, I suspect Kieboom might be their top potential trade piece for a reliever this summer, assuming Robles and Soto are off the table. Same goes for some of the other guys having great years like Johnson and Lora. The big club’s bullpen is such a disaster that we may see a lot of prospects wearing other organizations’ uniforms by August.
I wish they’d try to make the most of what they already have, namely AJ Cole. He seems to have all the stuff to be a good reliever, but not the right stuff to be a starter, specifically good velocity, good strikeout numbers, but fringy-to-bad secondary pitches. Meanwhile, Cole has been pretty terrible over the past season and a half, and we’re desperate for relief.
It’s so astoundingly obvious and yet the Nats are stubbornly refusing to use him as anything but a starter. What’s going on?
Also, what’s it going to take to give Austin Adams a shot? He’s already on the 40 man, and Treinen has options. His command has been terrible, but as long as batters swing, he’s been unhittable. He couldn’t be worse than Blanton or Treinen.
