Syracuse – OFF DAY
After taking six straight—five at home—the Chiefs take their show on the road to North Carolina and Virginia to face the Bulls and the Tide for three games apiece. Roster move: RHP Jacob Turner recalled to Washington.

Reading 9 Harrisburg 1

Reading went to town on the Harrisburg bullpen to break open a 2-1 game and win going away, 9-1. Jaron Long took the loss with two runs allowed on six hits and a walk while striking out eight over five innings. Jake Johansen was lit up for three runs in the 6th while Jimmy Cordero was smoked for four runs in the 7th. Drew Ward and Raudy Read both went 2-for-4 to lead the Sens offense.

Potomac – OFF DAY
The P-Nats resume play after their first scheduled day off with a three-game homestand against the Keys. Weather permitting, natch.

Hagerstown vs. Kannapolis – PPD
Rain interrupted or postponed play for the fourth time this month yesterday in Hagerstown. They’ll try to play two today to make it up.

Man, Jimmy Cordero is a mess. Is there a mental DL? The guy needs a break.

A triple digit fastball but can’t command it (10 BB in 5 IP!!). I’m getting serious deja-vu.

Seems he’s literally following Johansen’s lead, who got inspiration from Henry Rodriguez.

Just wish Rizzo would get over his fascination for guys with huge arms and no control. Yes, a decent FB has become pretty much required to survive in the majors these days, but as accidental success story Tanner Roark shows, being able to hit your spots means way more than having an extra 5 MPH of velocity.

        Totally agreed.

Was there a more fun pitcher to watch for 10-15 years than Greg Maddox?
Could not break a plane of glass with his fastball.

If there is a mental DL, Treinen can join Cordero on it. Goodness. I don’t know that you cut Cordero outright, but as Todd suggested a day or two ago, it’s at least time to DFA him and get him off the 40-man. Not many teams are going to jump at his 21.94 ERA and 4.50 WHIP.

Johansen’s career is on at least it’s 11th or 12th life. I really do pull for all the guys to make it, or at least do as well as they can. But sometimes the handwriting is on the wall.

On a positive note, has anyone mentioned Raudy Read this season? He’s slashing .327/.365/.571 at AA at age 23. I know Luke always points out his difficulties with the “catch” part of catching, but goodness, there aren’t a lot of catchers who can hit like that.

Also, good to see a strong start from Jacob Turner with the big club. Considering how much time Joe Ross missed last season, I would bet he’s on an innings limit this year. That might mean we may be seeing Turner or Fedde getting a long look by August or September.

      . Jacob Turner bravo !
      Go Joe Ross

Man, every season I think “this is the year Jake Johansen shows why he was picked so high.” And it seems like every year I’m wrong.

I can’t imagine him lasting thru the summer if he doesn’t start showing some dramatic improvement soon.
