Syracuse – OFF DAY
Yesterday was the final scheduled off day for Syracuse as the Chiefs close out the season with 29 games in 28 days. They’re currently on a three-game slide, which has reduced their tragic nos. to nine for the division and 11 for the wild card.

Harrisburg – OFF DAY
The second-place Senators visit the first-place Curve for three games starting tonight. Harrisburg trails Altoona by 1½ games but leads Akron by ½ games in the E.L. playoff race.

Potomac – OFF DAY
Division-leading Potomac leads runner-up (and first-half champ) Lynchburg by four games with six games left between the two teams: three starting tonight in Woodbridge, three more on August 26-28. The P-Nats are on a five-game winning streak and, like the Sens, have a comfortable lead over the next team in the playoff chase as they lead the Keys by nine games in the second-half race. Roster moves: RHP Jorge Pantoja promoted from Hagerstown.

Kannapolis 8 Hagerstown 4
• Bourque (L, 4-5) 5IP, 9H, 3R, 3ER, BB, 3K, HR
• Peterson ⅔ IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 1K, 1-0 IR-S
• Mesa 2-3, 2B, BB
• Noll 1-3, R, 3B, BB

The Suns dropped their third straight with an 8-4 loss to the Intimidators. James Bourque turned in a subpar start of three runs on nine hits and a walk. He struck out three while losing his fifth game. Kannapolis lapped Jake Johansen and Robbie Dickey for five more runs, including two in the 9th to put the game away. Narciso Mesa singled, doubled, and walked to lead the Hagerstown offense, which collected seven hits and drew four walks. Roster moves: RHP J.D. Martin reassigned from the GCL; RHP Robbie Dickey activated from the 7-Day DL; RHP Pedro Avila placed on the 7-Day DL.

Batavia 1 Auburn 0
• Watson 6IP, 2H, 0R, BB, 8K
• Simonds 2IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 2K
• Held (L, 1-1) ⅔ IP, 3H, R, ER, 0BB, 0K
• Ortiz 2-4
• Panaccione 1-3

NYPL All-Star Tyler Watson struck out a career-high eight in a 1-0 Auburn loss to Batavia. The 19-y.o. escaped the curse of the GBI with six shutout innings, allowing two hit and a walk. Kyle Simonds followed with two perfect innings of relief. The loss went to Samuel Held, who was touched for the game winner on three hits in the 9th. Oliver Ortiz singled twice while Paul Panaccione singled once to account for the Chiefs Doubledays’ three hits. Auburn OF Nick Banks and RHP Weston Davis were also named to the NYPL All-Star game to be held next Tuesday in Hudson Valley.

Considering there were 3 teams off, a lot of info today to digest.
    Watson sure has been impressive.
It will be interesting to see if any of the Doubleday All-Stars get a promotion after the game.

can anyone explain the plan for J D Martin to me? I rooted for the guy back in ’08 but cannot see a current value to the organization.

former big leaguer. Some guys come back from injury better than ever (Christian Garcia, Rafael Martin). Let’s see whether he heads upward or to the coaching tree. No loss if he is keeping a seat warm for other players as did Lambert before him. No need to rush players into a Brinley-like crash when the fall instructional leagues loom.

We will never know whether the extra month in AAA helped Trea to make the seamless transition. Or whether his time away from SS will help Turner transition into the Nats IF. But we can look at Mike Taylor and ask what if and just hope he comes back the next time he gets a chance — hopefully in DC.

Agree with you on Taylor, fore. A lot of it was out of necessity, but Michael A’s career sure was hurt by his usage the last year+.
I still think he has superstar potential.

Will Detweiler get start vs Orioles

          Fall instructional league camp
          Should be fun .

I will never complain about getting Joe Ross and Trey Turner, but, man, one guy we gave up is really kicking butt. Just realized that Travis Ott has allowed one earned run in 41 2/3 innings this year! Just goes to show how great of a scouting department the Nats have. Love it how they find these great low draft picks with potential. Our own Watson is another perfect example.

Though Ott’s handling by the Rays is pretty curious. He’s actually further from the big leagues now than he was when he was on the Nats. He’d made a brief appearance in High A Potomac to end the 2014 season. Since then, the Rays have had him repeat LOW A ball for 2 more full seasons.

I’d expect most players would dominate in their 3rd full season at that level. What are the Rays doing?

Haven’t seen it mentioned anywhere, but just in case anyone isn’t aware: the Future Face of the Franchise (TM) is back in action at the GCL – Robles played on Sunday and Monday and was a collective 1-6 (with a CS).

Mark L. – you mindmelded with my reaction to the AS choices. The Nats promoted after the other league AS games, so lets see whether this happens in the short seasons as well. There will be room on Hagerstown if Avila and/or Baez get shut down for innings, because the pitchers added are transitional at best.

And of course, it will enable the upward mobility of starters like Simonds and Fuentes.

Notice the guy I saw in Aberdeen
      Opener Acevedos bumped up to
Hags to fill Avila IP or help pen.
      How was Staten Isle, Gil??

Trea Bien – the best nickname, for Expos holdovers like me.

Ott – no throw in, that’s for sure. But never was.

Robles – CS means he is back to playing aggressive. Best sign is if we see another HBP 🙂 Well, maybe not.

Interesting in gCl game vs mets
Robles gets thrown out by mets LF
      Wagner LAGrange who then went
On to hit HR to cinch
Sundberg up to Hags was surprising
But Banks is busy with AS game
      Anybody think Banks will force
      Wiseman up to potomAc ??
      Interesting bump ups to come
A market ing guru could come up
With a cute teeshirt about Pantoja
      Along the PotomAc ???
      Gil. How are you?

Jeff – Warm greetings – I did call Sundberg to Hags in my crystal ball several days ago. But the Acevedo bump is a surprise. Feels temporary to fill depth until after the NYPL ASB. Will be nice to have Watson and or Davis get a turn or two at Hags.

Encarnacion has the tools but has tailed off badly. Time to see who else can deliver. Sundberg is a polished team player, whatever his ceiling. Banks can get his chance soon there as well. Wiseman ? – feels like Jeff Gardner all over again.
