Syracuse vs. Columbus – PPD
Syracuse didn’t lose on Saturday, thanks to the rain that forced a doubleheader today. Roster move: RHP Reynaldo Lopez recalled to Washington.
Harrisburg 8 Binghamton 4
• Mapes (W, 11-8) 6IP, 10H, 4R, 3ER, BB, 4K, HBP
• Suero (H, 8) 2IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 1K
• Ballou 2-3, R, 2B, 2BB, 2RBI
• Marmolejos 2-3, 2R, BB, HR, RBI
• Kieboom 1-2, 2BB, RBI
The Senators put up four in the 1st, survived a scare in the 6th, and rallied in the 7th and 8th innings to double up the B-Mets, 8-4. Tyler Mapes won for the 11th time with all four Binghamton runs on 10 hits and a walk over six innings. Wander Suero tossed two scoreless and Andrew Robinson pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to close out the game. Jose “Orange” Marmolejos smacked his first AA longball and went 2-for-3 as did Isaac Ballou, who drove in two and walked twice to lead the Harrisburg offense.
Potomac 12 Frederick 6
• Williams (W, 4-3) 6+ IP, 10H, 5R, 5ER, 2BB, 1K, HR, WP
• Orlan (H, 7) 2IP, 2H, 0R, BB, 2K, 2-1 IR-S
• Schrock 3-4, R, BB, HR, 2RBI, CS
• Keller 3-5, 2R, 2-2B, 2RBI
• Read 2-5, 2R, 2B, BB
Potomac went double-single-homer-walk-double-triple to open the 9th to turn a 6-5 game into a 12-6 smackdown of Frederick. Austen Williams got the Jack Morris win with five runs allowed on 10 hits and two walks over six-plus innings while fanning one. R.C. Orlan, who let in one of Williams’s runs, earned his seventh hold pitching the rest of the 7th and a scoreless 8th. Max “For Those About To” Schrock and Drew Vettleson both went deep, combining for five RBI while Schrock and Alec Keller led the hit column with three apiece as the P-Nats pounded out 17 hits total on the night.
Hagerstown 3 Asheville 2
• Bourque 4⅔ IP, 6H, 2R, 2ER, 0BB, 5K
• Dickey (W, 1-0) 2⅓ IP, 0H, 0R, BB, 2K, 2-0 IR-S
• Rivera (SV, 8) 2IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 1K
• Sagdal 2-3, R, HR, 2RBI
• DeBruin 2-3
Ian Sagdal’s two-run HR capped a three-run 6th as Hagerstown took a 2-1 series lead with a 3-2 win over Asheville. James Bourque got the start and was charged with both Tourist runs on six hits and no walks as he set down five on strikes. The 59-minute rain delay ended his night after four and 2/3rds innings. Robbie Dickey got the win as he stranded two while getting the last out of the 5th and pitched two more scoreless innings. The save went to Mariano Rivera III with two more goose eggs. Sagdal and Grant DeBruin both went 2-for-3 to lead the Suns attack.
Batavia 0 Auburn 0
• Dunning 3IP, 3H, 0R, 0BB, 5K
• Dulin 0-0, BB
The score was still 0-0 when the rain halted play after three innings in Auburn. They’ll pick it up today at noon and complete it, followed by a seven-inning game for a de facto doubleheader.
GCL Update
Despite a 3-2 week, the G-Nats have drifted to 3½ games behind the G-Cards in the GCL East. The tragic number is 12 with two and half weeks left to play.
DSL Update
The D-Nats took a tailspin last week with five straight losses before winning yesterday, 3-2 over the D-Brewers. For those obsessed with large sums of money thrown at teenagers, $700K and 17-y.o. Elvis Alvarado was transferred from the DSL Roster to the GCL Roster last Tuesday but has yet to play professionally.
Time to say goodbye to Matthew Spann, who was one of the more interesting stories of Nats minors lore.
Remember Davis DeJesus anybody? He was claimed on waivers by Mike Rizzo from the Cubs, even though he didn’t really want him. He was a Nat for 2 days before being traded to Tampa for Matthew Spann in 2013. Rizzo talked about adding inventory.
Fast forward 2.5 years and the end of the road for Matthew Spann with the Nats.
Luke knows a lot more about him than me but at least I wish him well, maybe with an organization that isn’t so stacked with arms.
Hat tip to Tyler Mapes for winning again with a ‘gutsy’ performance. His stat line for the season is 3.13 ERA with a 1.20 WHIP. Terrific for a 30th rounder who’s only 2 years in.
Heading to FRED
I know that there are a few weeks left, but I am calling it. Schrock is PoY ( not that its necessarily a good thing). Pitcher of Year going to be either Fedde or Glover.
The “Orange” might have something to say about that, but methinks whoever isn’t the POTY will get the Boone award.
Didn’t the Orange win last year? And what’s the Boone Award?
Yes, he did. The Bob Boone award started a couple of years ago – Austen Williams won it last year, Difo in ’14, and Renda in ’13 – and it’s a nebulous “player who embodies the Washington Nationals way,” which I interpret as “the coaches’ favorite who didn’t win his category.”
Josh Hart robbed Max of a ️sure double with victor on first.
How did victor respond to getting
Hit on hand / wrist to lead off

Interesting knuckleball reinvention
By JD Martin. Home plate ump took
Awhile to adjust to seeing floaters .
Meanwhile Masters seems to have toned up some compared to two years ago.
Robles HBP again! Steals a base and scores a run. Don’t get yourself killed, stud!
Were you @ game GIl Grissom??
Reliver did not impress
Luke, perhaps the real notable about the Alvarado addition is that it signals that after the NYPL All-Star game Tuesday we see upward mobility from Auburn and from the GCL. The Doubledays have no playoffs coming and there are some good performers at the GCL who might slide up to get a taste of NY when Banks, Watson, and perhaps Davis head for Hagerstown.
That, and the other hitters at the DSL are not impressing enough to get a ticket here.
DSL not impressing for this year
GIl we are in same wave length
