A first-inning grand slam by Jason Martinson wasn’t enough for Lucas Giolito to work with in his second AAA start as Buffalo edged Syracuse, 6-5 in the series finale. Giolito was stampeded for five runs on five hits and four walks over five innings. He struck out five in the no-decision. The loss went to Koda Glover with a run on three hits over two innings. The Chiefs managed just five hits total and drew four walks with Martinson (HR, single), Matt Skole (single, walk) and Brian Goodwin (2BB) each reaching base twice in the loss. Roster moves: RHP Reynaldo Lopez optioned from Washington.

Rain postponed the finale of the Sens-Goats series in the Manchester not by the sea. It will be made up on August 26 when the two teams meet again in New Hampshire for five games now on August 25-28.

Matthew Crownover turned in his best outing of the year as Potomac took the game, 2-1 and the series, 3-1 from Carolina. The 23-y.o. southpaw allowed the one run on four hits over a career-high seven innings. He walked none and struck out four while earning his second win. Neil Holland struck out three of seven batters faced over the final two frames to earn the save, his second for the year. Max “For Those About To” Schrock drove in Austin Davidson twice with a single in the 3rd and a groundout in the 7th as the P-Nats managed just seven hits but drew seven walks total.

The Suns also jumped out to a 4-0 lead that was too small for Jefry Rodriguez to hold as the Crawdads took the series finale, 7-5. Rodriguez lost for the sixth time in seven starts, giving up all seven Hickory runs on seven hits and four walks over four and a 1/3rd innings. Grant Borne let in both inherited runners but otherwise held things down the rest of the way. Kelvin Gutierrez singled, walked, and homered while Rhett Wiseman tripled in two and Jakson Reetz drove in two during the four-run 1st to power the Hagerstown offense.

Auburn was shut out on six hits by Staten Island’s Kolton Mahoney to lose the opener, 7-0. Doubleday starter Dane Dunning let in four runs on five hits and a walk over three and 2/3rds innings. He struck out three while suffering his first loss. Just two Auburn batters made it into scoring position: David Kerian with a leadoff double in the 2nd (and was stranded at third) and Nick Banks, who led off the 4th with a single and moved up on a groundout to the pitcher.
