Syracuse – ALL STAR BREAK
Charlotte, NC plays host to the AAA All-Star Game between the International League and the Pacific Coast League. Brian Goodwin and Rafael Martin will be representing Syracuse for the I.L. team.

Harrisubrg – ALL STAR BREAK
The Eastern League All-Star Game is in Akron, OH, home of the RubberDucks. Tyler Mapes, Andrew Robinson, and Neftali Soto will be representing Harrisburg for the Western Division team.

Potomac – OFF DAY
After the longest homestand of the season, the P-Nats make their second seven-game road trip, this time going to the Salems to play the Dash in NC for three and the Red Sox in VA for four games.

Asheville 5 Hagerstown 4 (12 inn.)
• Giolito 7IP, 6H, 4R, 4ER, 0BB, 4K, 2HR
• Borne 4IP, 2H, 0R, BB, 3K
• VanVossen (L, 3-3) 1IP, 2H, R, ER, 0BB, 2K, HR
• Mesa 2-5, SB

The good news is that Lucas Giolito came in from Syracuse. The bad news is that he seems like he brought the Chiefs’ inability to hit in the clutch with him. Mix in three HRs and that’s a recipe for a disappointing 5-4 loss by Hagerstown to Asheville. Giolito gave up the four runs, three via the longball, on six hits and no walks over seven innings. He struck out four while throwing 97 pitches, 61 for strikes. Grant Borne followed with four shutout innings while Mick VanVossen served up the gamewinner on a leadoff HR to start the 12th to take the loss. The Suns collected nine hits, drew seven walks, and stole four bases but were a miserable 2-for-13 with RISP, including Matthew Page’s two-run HR in the 4th to cap off a three-run rally and Telmito’s RBI single in the 7th to tie the game.
Roster moves: RHP Lucas Giolito reassigned from Syracuse; RHP Pedro Avila placed on the 3-Day TIL; C Jorge Tillero placed on the 7-Day DL; C Adderling Ruiz activated from the 7-Day DL.

Auburn 3 Vermont 1
• Watson 5IP, 5H, R, ER, 0BB, 4K
• Cespedes (W, 1-0) 2IP, 1H, 0R, BB, 0K, HBP
• Perkins 1-4, R, 3B, 2RBI
• Banks 1-4, RBI

Auburn rallied for three in the 8th to break a four-game losing streak with a 3-1 win over Vermont. Blake Perkins’s two-run triple highlighted the outburst, which Nick Banks completed with an IF single to plate Perkins. Angher Cespedes got the win in relief with two scoreless innings, working around a hit batsman in the 8th and a single in the 9th. Tyler Watson got the start and gave up the Lake Monsters’ run on five hits and no walks over five innings. Roster moves: RHP Francys Peguero reassigned to the GCL Nationals; RHP Dane Dunning and LHP Hayden Howard promoted from the GCL Nationals.

Repeated from the previous comments section:
In alumni news: Chris Marrero won the AAA All-star game home run derby, and is having himself quite a season at AAA Pawtucket. Could a major league call up finally be on the cards for later on this season?

Wow, he’s 28 already. I remember when he was the #1 prospect in the Nats system for 2-3 years, and the reason he didn’t make it at the time was his power diminished each level he moved up.

Meanwhile, T-Mo hit 31 HRs in back-to-back years and left Marrero basically dead in the water. As I recall, Marrero also had the misfortune of having some minor injury in early 2012 when the big club was basically holding open auditions, calling up Harper early, giving Corey Brown a couple of looks, and extended time to T-Mo and Lombo. Marrero was even more immobile than Moore, though, if that’s possible, and would have had a hard time even pretending to play LF.

Oh it’s possible and I’ve had the misfortune of watching Marrero play LF too. Slower than a catcher with multiple knee injuries.

            Ouch! But true . . .

Why was Giolito sent to Hagerstown? Isn’t workload still an issue for him (he threw 117 IP last season)? Wouldn’t this have been a convenient excuse to give him a break, and maybe save a few innings that might be needed in September/October?

Since June 22 (21 days ago), Giolito has pitched a total of 14.2 innings including last night. As is apparent from his most recent outings, he needs the work and has many things to work on; can’t get better without playing.

Here are his last 4 outings:

      June 22: 4.2 IP 5 ER (AA)
      June 28: 4 IP 0 ER (MLB)
      July 7: 3.2 IP 4 ER (MLB)
      Jul 12: 7 IP 4 ER (Low A)

The stated reason Giolito was sent to Hagerstown was so he could pitch on normal rest. The three higher-level teams were all on break yesterday. It was a shaky outing, but at least no walks after his wild Thursday in NYC. FWIW, the Nats really do seem to be stretching out his innings, presumably in an effort to get him at least well into September. Whether they give him another start with the big club before Ross comes off the DL will remain to be seen.

Way to go Blake with GW triple

I was truly looking forward to seeing him pitch, but I was a little shocked at how straight his fastball is (no movement). They had him timed by the second at bat and he didn’t seem to have anything else to throw. I hope I am wrong. He reminded me of a right handed Gio a little.

Our buddy Orange committed his 9th error Monday night, which seems like an awful lot for a first baseman. He’s going to have to tighten up that defense if he’s going to get his shot at the bigs.

The “Orange” won’t remind anyone of J.T. Snow but he’s better than those 9 errors indicate. Easily the best true 1B to play for the P-Nats in the last few years.

        Agree

        Speaking of similar records for
Nats 16 @ break and 94 expos, I see Butch Henry pitching coach
        For Pulaski Yankees.
