Syracuse vs. Lehigh Valley – PPD
Heavy thunderstorms swept through Pennsylvania and postponed the series opener between the Chiefs and the IronPigs. They’ll make it up tonight with a doubleheader at [Your Ad Here] Park. Roster moves: RHP Trevor Gott assigned to GCL for MiLB rehab; RHP Lucas Giolito, OF Michael Taylor optioned from Washington.
Harrisburg vs. New Hampshire –
Ditto for Harrisburg, though officially “wet grounds” was the reason cited for the postponement. Likewise, it’s a twinbill tonight at [parts of Major League II filmed here] Field. Roster move: RHP Jaron Long reassigned from Syracuse; 1B Shawn Pleffner placed on the 7-Day DL (dated 7/24).
Salem 7 Potomac 4
• Fedde 5IP, 7H, R, ER, BB, 5K, WP
• Mendez (BS, 1; L, 2-3) 1IP, 5H, 4R, 4ER, BB, 0K, 0HR, HBP
• Masters 2-4, R, RBI
• Carey 0-0, 4BB
It wasn’t La Cage aux Folles night in Woodbridge but it sure was a drag (3 hours, 46 minutes) as the Red Sox got to Gilberto Mendez again for four runs in the 9th to beat the P-Nats, 7-4. Erick Fedde labored through five innings as he let in a run on seven hits and a walk. He struck out five but threw 98 pitches. Mendez put on six straight runners with one out as Salem beat him for the third time is as many appearances, with a blown save added in for good measure. Led by Dale Carey with four, Potomac drew seven walks but all ten of its hits were singles, with David Masters, Max “For Those About To” Schrock, and Jose “Orange” Marmolejos each collecting two and driving in one.
Hagerstown 5 Charleston 4 (10 inn.)
• Guilbeau 5IP, 7H, 3R, 3ER, 0BB, 2K
• Borne (W, 3-0) 3IP, 2H, R, ER, 2BB, 2K
• Wiseman 2-3, 2R, BB, HR, RBI
• Sagdal 2-5, R, HR, 2RBI
• Page 1-4, R, HR, 2RBI
Matthew Page’s two-run HR in the 9th tied it, Ian Sagdal’s two-out solo shot in the 10th won it. Charleston’s Hobie Harris gave up four runs total in the final three innings to turn a 4-1 lead into a 5-4 loss to Hagerstown. Grant Borne was the winner, giving up a run on two hits and two walks over the final three innings. Taylor Guilbeau got the start and was charged with three runs on seven hits over five innings. He walked none and struck out two. Rhett Wiseman also homered while going 2-for-3 with a walk as the Suns collected eight hits total but struck out 11 times. Roster move: IF Grant DeBruin placed on the 3-Day TIL.
Auburn vs. Williamsport – PPD
Rain also washed away the tilt between the Doubledays and the Crosscutters, who will also make it up tonight with a doubleheader.
Roster move: RHP Dakota Bacus reassigned from the GCL for MiLB rehab.
Very good to see Trevor Gott resurfacing. We guys go down with arm issues, you always hold your breath until they reappear.
Speaking of missing persons, it’s now been a month since the Nats supposedly signed Mat Latos. Maybe Chris Sale cut him up in the White Sox clubhouse before he left . . .
I gather they are working with Latos in Florida and will assign him to AAA in August with the idea of a September call up. Just a guess.
Agree about Gott.
Granted, this is based on last year and not this, but I still think the Nats have something useful in Gott. I am playing pop psychologist, but I think part of this year’s issues had to be disappointment in being sent down after breaking out last year and then being traded to a new team where he thought he’d be a bullpen cog. Combine that with his injury and that can explain his numbers.
If he’s healthy and his head is straight, he has the stuff to still help at the Show.
Silvstre sighting down in the GCL (has now started 3 games for the GCL Nats) – first games since 2014 for Hector. I wish him well.
And, while we’re on the subject of MIA players – Victor, Victor, wherefore art thou, Victor?
Question for the general population. Let’s say the Nats make a bullpen trade by 1/8. Who leaves?
My bet is 2 of Schrock; Voth Fedde and Phillips Valdez……
Losing Schrock sure would hurt.
What the Nats have that everyone wants is pitching; especially starting pitching.
Now that Trea Turner has shown that there is no need to trade for a leadoff hitter, the only needs for the big club is backend bullpen help.
For those who missed it, here’s a good writeup on Turner

Robles was in uniform coaching 1B last night again for Potomac. Had they put him on the DL immediately today would be his first day back. Why they did not — and chose to play with a short bench — is a question that will not be answered.
Thanks Luke. Interesting move getting a 19 year old to coach 1st base – presumably this is another “teaching” move that they occasionally do in the minor leagues?
For those who didn’t see it, this from the Post on Robles, including the Nats’ concern that he plays too hard:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/nationals/victor-robles-plays-hard-enough-to-make-nationals-excited-and-nervous/2016/07/25/fb26bee8-528d-11e6-b7de-dfe509430c39_story.html
Nah. Coaching 1B in the minors isn’t a big deal at all – it’s usually someone off the bench or one of the secondary coaches since the manager is running the show from 3B.
Really depends on who the Nats trade for. If they target Miller or Wade Davis, they are going to have to give up at least one of Lopez, Giolito or Robles + Fedde + another lower rated prospect or two. If they trade for Jeremy Jeffress or Jenmar Gomez the price won’t be as steep (e.g., Fedde + a lower rated prospect).
I haven’t seen Valdez or Schrock mentioned in trade speculation. That doesn’t mean it couldn’t happen, though; Valdez could be compared to Pivetta, a second-tier starter prospect who netted a closer.
If other teams are paying attention, they might be asking about guys like Schrock or Tyler Watson. Prospect ranking seems to drive a lot of the “trade value,” though, and those guys haven’t shown up on the higher levels of those lists . . . yet.
And hopefully Watson stays off the radar till he’s ready to replace Gio as the lefty in the rotation. I know a lot can happen between low A and the Bigs, but it’s not hard to imagine him being ready in late 2018 or early 2019.
I’m sure if WE know about him there are more than a few Big League teams that know about him, too. But the longer he toils in anonymity, the better the chances he isn’t part of a trade package!
Despite laboring, as Luke said, more than he has of late, this was Fedde (Wap)’s 9th straight start allowing one run or less. His numbers during that stretch: 44 IP, 34 H, 9 BB, 4 ER, 41 Ks – 0.81 ERA, 0.97 WHIP.
Personally, I’d reward him with a taste of AA, though perhaps after the trade deadline so if he gets shelled it doesn’t impact his trade value. I still see him as the Nats elite prospect most likely to be traded, but as long as he is still in the system, he should be rewarded and moved up before they shut him down as he hits his post-TJ innings limit.
Another Nat I’d like to see get moved up is Grant Borne, in part because he had done well in long relief at A-ball – 1.50 ERA his last 10 games – but because the Nats only have three lefty prospects* at AA or AAA: Grace, Other Harper and Lee.
If Borne plays at Potomac this year, it increases the odds he can play at AA early next season.
*Not counting Laffey as a prospect as I see him more as AAA veteran roster filler.
