Syracuse – ALL STAR BREAK
Rafael Martin was named the I.L. Pitcher of the Week for July 4-10, the second Syracuse Chief to garner the award (Trea Turner) this season. Martin was named to the I.L. All-Star team last week as a replacement and will be joined by Turner and Brian Goodwin in Charlotte, NC. Roster move: RHP Nick Masset retired.

Harrisubrg – ALL STAR BREAK
The Senators go into the All-Star break in 3rd place, the highest they’ve been at the midseason point since 2013 when they were in 1st. Curiously, they have seven games left against 1st-place Altoona but are done with 2nd-place Akron, against which Harrisburg went 9-6 including two of three this past weekend.

Potomac 6 Carolina 5
• Williams 6IP, 7H, 3R, 3ER, BB, K, HR
• Mendez (W, 2-0) 2IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 1K, 1-0 IR-S
• Abreu 2-3, 2R, 2BB, RBI, 2SB
• Masters 2-4, 2R
• Schrock 2-5, 2B (16G hit streak)

Raudy Read’s two-run double in the 7th broke a 4-4 tie and the Potomac ‘pen bent but didn’t break for a 6-5 win to split the four-game series. Austen Williams turned in another quality start, giving up three runs on seven hits and a walk while fanning one over six innings. He left with a 4-3 lead but R.C. Orlan’s struggles continues as he blew the save while getting just two outs in the 7th. The win went to Gilberto Mendez as the most effective reliever with two innings pitched and just one hit allowed while stranding an inherited runner in the 8th. Osvaldo Abreu led the P-Nats attack with two walks, two singles, and two stolen bases while Max Schrock pushed his hit streak to 16 games with a single and double.

Hagerstown – OFF DAY
While it has not been officially announced yet, Lucas Giolito is slated to make a start for Hagerstown during this series to remain on his pitching schedule, perhaps as soon as tonight since there is a chance of rain tomorrow. Giolito last pitched on July 7th against the Mets and would be working on four days’ rest if he goes tonight, five if he goes tomorrow.

Vermont 4 Auburn 0
• Simonds (L, 0-1) 3IP, 5H, R, ER, BB, 2K
• Acevedo 3⅔ IP, 4H, R, ER, BB, 0K
• Ripken 1-3, 2B
• Ortiz 1-3

The Doubledays dropped to .500 at 12-12 as their losing streak went to four with a 4-0 loss to the Lake Monsters. Kyle Simonds scattered five hits over three innings and walked one while striking out two, but took the loss in his NYPL debut. Vermont’s Xavier Altamirano dominated Auburn for seven scoreless innings, allowing just four hits – three singles by Blake Perkins, Nick Banks, and Oliver Ortiz and a double by Ryan Ripken, who was thrown out at home to end the 5th inning.

Daniel Johnson has really cooled off after his hot start at Auburn, now down to .235. Nick Banks has had the opposite experience, starting ice cold but now at .266 after eight hits in his last four games.

My apologies if this was noted somewhere earlier. I haven’t completely kept up between the weekend and the site changeover stuff. Anyway, top draft pick Dane Dunning debuted on Saturday in the GCL with two clean innings and 3 Ks. It’s curious that they would start him off in the GCL, although it may have just been a matter of convenience for a Gator. One would think that he’ll be transitioning to Upstate NY soon enough.

Dunning and Hayden Howard are already in Auburn. They probably just wanted them to get their feet wet.

I expect them to give Howard a look as a starter as well. Texas Tech used him pretty similarly to how UF used Dunning. Both saw a lot of work getting their teams to the CWS, though, so the Nats may limit their innings over the rest of the summer.

Will Turner play in the AAA all-star game even though the Nats called him up last week? I assumed that once he was on an active MLB roster he would be ineligible, but maybe not.

My bad – I forgot he got called up.

Ho-hum, just another day at the office for Max Shrock: 2-5.

His average went down. I knew he wasn’t that good 🙂

He’s gotten two hits in each of the last six games . . . and seen his average go down each time, poor guy. He’s apparently the Daniel Murphy of the Carolina League.

Mark Tindall must be a guy brass
Had on their draft board when Angels drafted him or same eyes
Who saw Gott and Brady saw him.
Bless those miles churning scouts !

In alumni news: Chris Marrero won the AAA All-star game home run derby, and is having himself quite a season at AAA Pawtucket. Could a major league call up finally be on the cards for later on this season?
