Syracuse 9 Durham 2
• Long (W, 1-2) 7IP, 2H, 2R, 2ER, 2BB, 7K
• Glover 2IP, 1H, 0R, 2BB, 0K, WP
• Ramsey 3-5, R, HR, 2RBI
• Skole 2-3, 2R, 2B, 2BB, RBI
• den Dekker 2-5, R, HR, 5RBI
Matt den Dekker may be sweet to old ladies, but that didn’t stop him from hitting a granny to cap off a five-run 6th as the Chiefs broke a three-game losing streak with a 9-2 goring of the Bulls. Jaron Long got his first AAA win with seven innings of two-run ball on two hits and two walks while fanning seven. Caleb Ramsey also homered and singled twice while Matt Skole reached base four times with two singles and two walks to lead the Chiefs offense. Roster moves: OF Michael Taylor optioned from Washington; IF Jason Martinson placed on the 7-Day DL, retroactive to July 3.
Harrisburg vs. Erie – PPD
Rain spoiled the pre-Fireworks festivities, so they’ll play two today in Harrisburg. Roster move: RHP Jonathan Papelbon MLB rehab assignment ended.
Wilmington 12 Potomac 1
• Crownover (L, 0-3) 4+ IP, 6H, 5R, 4ER, 2BB, 2K
• Sanchez 4IP, 8H, 7R, 7ER, BB, 2K, HR, 2-1 IR-S
• Robles 2-4, R, 2B, HR, RBI
• Schrock 2-4, 2B, 2SB
While the game was effectively over, the Blue Rocks made sure of it with a seven-run 8th in a 12-1 obliteration of the P-Nats. Matthew Crownover started and lost for third time in six starts as Wilmington connected for five runs on six hits and two walks over four-plus innings. Victor Robles provided the lone Potomac run with an opposite-field HR golfed on the second pitch of the 1st. Max Schrock (note: one syllable) extended his hit streak to nine with a single and a double while stealing two bases. Potomac managed just five hits total and was 0-for-9 with RISP.
Kannapolis 8 Hagerstown 2
• Baez (L, 5-6) 6IP, 6H, 3R, 3ER, 2BB, 6K, HR
• Hearn 1⅔ IP, 6H, 5R, 5ER, BB, 4K, HR
• Lora 2-4, 2B, 2RBI
• Dent 1-3, R, 2B, BB
The Intimidators scored eight unanswered runs as they lapped the Suns, 8-2 in the series opener. Joan Baez turned in a quality start of three runs allowed on six hits and two walks while striking out six, but lost for the sixth time. Taylor followed with a scoreless 7th but crashed and burned in the 8th as Kannapolis piled on four runs to put the game away. Edwin Lora singled, doubled, and drove in both runs to lead the Hagerstown hit column. Roster moves: RHP Jacob Howell reassigned from Auburn; RHP Robbie Dickey placed on 7-Day DL.
Auburn 4 Lowell 2
• Acevedo 5IP, 4H, R, ER, 2BB, 0K
• Fuentes (W, 1-0) 3IP, 2H, R, ER, 0BB, 3K, 3WP
• Morse (SV, 1) 1IP, 0H, 0R, 2BB, 1K
• Dulin 2-4, R
• Vilorio 1-3, R, BB
Auburn put up two-spots twice to double up Lowell, 4-2. Carlos Acevedo went the first five innings and let in a run on four hits and two walks but did not record a strikeout. The win went to Steven Fuentes, who walked none but was charged with three wild pitches, all of which contributed to the second Spinner run in the 6th. Dalton Dulin singled twice and scored a run while Luis Vilorio walked and singled to pace the Doubleday offense.
So 21st rounder Jacob Howell, a 20-year old 6-3 rightie from Delta State, becomes the first player from this year’s draft to move up to Hagerstown.
Over 2 games, he had allowed 2 hits and no walks with 6 Ks in 5 innings at Auburn after not allowing a runner in his lone, 1.2 inning appearance in the GCL.
This year’s Koda Glover?
Still waiting to see where the other shoe drops. Will Turner be recalled to play centerfield? Who gets demoted from the bullpen? Stay tuned…
It’s going to depend on what happens in the last two games of the Brewers series, and Gio is pitching tonight, which recently has meant that the bullpen will be busy.
If the bullpen continues to get taxed, the Nats will stay at 13 pitchers until the ASB. If the Nats can rest up their pen over these last two, Turner seems like the logical call up, even though that creates some issues: 1) the Nats want Turner playing everyday or at least almost everyday, does it really make sense to call up Turner for maybe 1 start in the Mets series, and then to do nothing over the ASB? So, Turner could end up with something like 5 at bats over 8 days; not good; 2) looking like Giolito is stating game #1 of the Mets series on Thursday; he has pitched more than 6 innings twice all year, and is on a strict innings limit; if they bring up Turner; the bullpen depth could be hurting even after only 1 game of the Mets series; 3) if Turner does start, it would most likely be against a lefty starter, and the Nats next 6 games are all against right-handed pitchers; 4) if the Nats plan to bring MAT back after the ASB, it might be easier to keep the position player roster as is.
Likely short starts from both Gio and giolito spell leaving Turner down to me and calling up Turner or MAT after the ASB once the ten days are up.
MAT needs to look better fast, methinks. It will be very interesting to see if Turner gets any CF reps while MAT is in Syracuse.
