Buffalo 8 Syracuse 2
• Ross (L, 0-1) 4⅔ IP, 7H, 3R, 3ER, BB, 4K
• Runion 1⅓ IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 1K
• Martinson 2-4, 2B
• Goodwin 2-5, R, OF assist at 3B
The Chiefs gave up five unearned late and were unable to cash in on numerous chances as they fell again to the Bison, 8-2. Joe Ross made a rehab start and was charged with three runs on seven hits and a walk over four and 2/3rds innings. He struck out four but took the loss. Down 3-2 in the 7th, an error and a passed ball led to three runs, then another error to start the 8th added two more. Meanwhile, Syracuse collected 11 hits (10 singles; Jason Martinson doubled) and went 0-for-11 with RISP with nine LOB. Roster moves: RHP Joe Ross assigned for MLB rehab.
Hartford Harrisburg
• Mapes (L, 10-7) 6IP, 5H, 3R, 0ER, BB, 2K, HR; 1-1, BB
• Self 2IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 1K
• Keyes 1-4, R, HR, RBI
• Keyes 2-3, R, 2B, BB, RBI
Same story in the Manchester, NH, where Hartford is playing this weekend because its stadium is both unfinished and uninsured as the Goats went yard after a two-out error in the 1st to score three unearned runs that stood up for a 3-2 win. Tyler Mapes and Derek Self combined for seven scoreless innings afterwards, allowing just four hits and a walk. Mapes lost for the seventh time despite getting on base twice himself (single, walk). Kevin Keyes homered for the third straight game and Andrew Stevenson went deep for the third time in 2016 to account for the two Senators runs.
Carolina 3 Potomac 1
• Fedde (L, 5-4) 6⅔ IP, 6H, 2R, 0ER, BB, 9K
• Orlan 1IP, 0H, 0R, IBB, 0K
• Vettleson 1-3, 2B, BB, RBI
• Carey 1-3, 2B
Erick Fedde turned in yet another strong outing (0.71 ERA, 0.99 WHIP in his last 10GS) but lost as the Mudcats’ Eric Clark outdueled him in a 3-1 victory over the P-Nats. Fedde struck out nine and pitched into the seventh for the second time this season as he gave up two unearned runs on six hits but suffered the loss. The Potomac bats were held to just four hits, with Drew Vettleson the sole batter to reach base twice with an RBI double and a walk.
Hickory 5 Hagerstown 3 – COMP.
• Borque 1IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 1K
• VanVossen 4IP, 3H, R, ER, BB, 2K
• Rivera (L, 3-1) 3IP, 5H, 4R, 3ER, 2BB, 2K, HR
• Encarnacion 1-4, R, BB
• Lora 1-4, R, 2SB
Thanks to the rainout, any momentum Hagerstown had was, um, washed away as Hickory scored five unanswered runs to take the completion, 5-3. Mick VanVossen took over from James Bourque and pitched four innings of one-run ball on three hits and a walk. Mariano Rivera III was pinched for runs in each of his three innings of work, giving up four total on five hits and two walks to lose for the first time in ’16. Randy Encarnacio was the sole batter to reach base twice, going 1-for-4 with a walk as the Crawdads relievers held the Suns to two hits over seven scoreless innings.
Hagerstown 6 Hickory 2 – COMP. (10 inn.)
• Guilbeau 5IP, 7H, 2R, 2ER, 0BB, 4K, HR, WP
• Walby 3IP, 2H, 0R, 0BB, 4K
• Johansen (W, 1-0) 2IP, 2H, 0R, 0BB, 1K
• Encarnacion 1-3, 2R, 2BB
• Gutierrez 2-5, R, 2RBI, CS
• Ruiz 1-4, 2B, BB, 3RBI
The Suns exploded for four runs in the 10th – in a game that was supposed to go just seven innings – to split the de facto doubleheader with a 6-2 win. Jake Johansen got the win in relief as he combined with Philip Walby for five scoreless inningss of relief. Taylor Guilbeau started and went the first five frames, allowing both Crawdads runs on seven hits while walking none and striking out four. Randy Encarnacion reached base three times and scored twice while Kelvin Rodriguez drove in two and Adderling Ruiz plated three with a double in the 10th.
Auburn 3 West Virginia 2
• Ramirez 5IP, 5H, 2R, 2ER, BB, 3K
• Held (W, 1-0) 2IP, 2H, 0R, 0BB, 1K
• Perkins 1-3, R, BB
• Sundberg 2-4
Jack Sundberg’s second single of the night drove in the gamewinner as Auburn took the series finale from West Virginia, 3-2. Yonathan Ramirez gave up both Black Bears runs on five hits and a walk while fanning three for another no-decision. Brayan Serrata (1IP), Phil Morse (1IP), and Samuel Held (2IP) combined for four scoreless innings of relief with Held getting the “W.” Sundberg went 2-for-4 to lead the Doubleday hit column while Sheldon Neuse and Blake Perkins both reached base twice to lead the eight-hit, two-walk offense. Roster moves: RHP Matt Pirro promoted, RHP Nick Conner demoted from the GCL.
GCL Update
Mat Latos came out of storage to throw three scoreless innings in Saturday’s 5-0 win vs. the G-Astros to G-even out the G-week at 3-3. The G-Nats continue to lead the GCL East by a game over the G-Cards.
DSL Update
The D-Nats continue to play out the string, winning three of six games last week, but remain eight games below .500 and 14 games behind in the San Pedro Division. This week, they play the D-Yankees2, the D-Tigers, and D-Cards.
It’s curious to read comments on other sites in the Nat blogosphere that claim the Hearn was really the Nats’ only LH starter prospect. In fact, he was part of a big infusion from the 2015 draft that included Crownover (the first of the group promoted to Potomac), Guilbeau, Borne, and Watson. Ramirez, who started last night for Auburn, is also LH. The Nats got at least two good LH starter prospects coming off TJs in the 2016 draft in Luzardo and Williamson and well as some swing guys who may end up as starters. Yes, they’re all a long way away from South Capitol, but so was Hearn.
On the flip side of experience, it will be interesting to see how quickly Latos moves up. Considering that Giolito and Lopez haven’t set the world on fire with the big club, Latos might get the call if some other starter goes down in the stretch.
It’s becoming more and more evident that Feede’s stuff has fully returned from his tj surgery and is the real deal. Unless a deal is for Trout, I really hope they hold on to him because he is moving up fast not just as a Nats prospect but as one of the minors best.
At some point, the Nats have to do something with Giolito, Lopez, Fedde and Cole OR trade someone in the current rotation.
The current rotation is under team control for at least two more seasons:
Strasburg thru 2023;
Scherzer and Ross thru 2021;
Roark thru 2019;
Gonzalez thru 2018 assuming options are picked up. And given that he’s a lefty and there are, currently, no other LH starting pitching options in the system close to the majors and most teams like to have at least one lefty in their rotation, it’s a safe bet his options are picked up.
Strasburg and Scherzer ain’t going anywhere. Gio was touched on above. Roark and Ross would both have a lot of trade value so maybe they get shopped though Roark is such a gamer it’s hard to see them parting with him but if the return is right, you never know.
That brings us back to the kids. If there are no spots in the rotation, either convert guys like Cole and Lopez to the bullpen – Lord knows, it could the help – or move them for players who can help now.
Next year Fedde will be at AA and if he keeps pitching to his potential, could be at AAA by June, where he’d just join a list of blocked pitchers.
If they can get a good bat or a proven reliever for these guys that can help then win now, do it, because hording them makes little sense.
And Voth.
I’ve got to say I was not impressed by Giolitto. Where did the big fastball go. Very straight and not explosively fast. Also could not control his secondary pitches. They had him timed and were practically running to get to the plate by the 3rd inning.
Lopez has got to spot his fastball. His breaking pitches are nasty. His fastball is good but not much movement. He has got a ways to go.
When’s AJ Cole up for minor league free agency? Must be soon.
He’s on the 40-man, so it doesn’t apply.
