The Sens got back-to-back doubles from Rafael Bautista and Wilmer and a two-out single by Andrew Stevenson to take a 4-2 lead in the top of the 12th and held off the Curve’s last gasp for a 4-2 win in extras. Philips Valdez and strike zone remain estranged as the 24-y.o. walked six of 18 batters faced. He needed 90 pitches to get through three and 2/3rds innings with one run and two hits allowed. Wander Suero picked up the win in relief as he worked aroun four hits over two scoreless. Abel De Los Santos cordero’d his way through the 12th, giving up a one-out double and a two-out walk to earn his fifth save.

It is way too early to make any definitive judgments, of course, but Barrera is looking like he might be the truly great find of the 2016 draft, at least offensively. Defensively, his 2 errors and 3 passed balls in just 15 games combined with throwing out only 4 of 17 base stealers suggests he has a lot to improve.

Trey should play some coner infield in the future as he did
      at Texas @ austin

I wonder whether the Dent release is in preparation for Gutierrez’s return to Hagerstown.

With Barrera, is it easier to find a catcher who can hit and try to improve his defense (the Derrick Norris/Raudy Read approach), or to get a great defensive catcher and hope he’ll hit (Severino et al)?

Dent was released in conjunction with Gutierrez’s activation.

I am sure he will keep the batting helmet to be a coach
        in org.

kudos to Lopez and also from a GA pine sitter @ Hags
last few years a raised beer to Cody Dent for filling holes
up and down the ladder as the young talent was brought
in and developed. Lets hope brass keeps him as a coach/mentor.

MLBTR says Reynaldo is getting the call to the big club for Monday. No other info.

Sounds like Reynaldo Lopez is being called up to start on Tuesday for the Nats.

    Congrats!

And for all those fearing his absence yesterday for Potomac, Robles led off today, walking (and getting caught stealing).

Yeah, I just saw the Lopez rumor as well. Wow. That would fit with getting Voth off the 3-day restricted list. Lopez doesn’t have a lot of innings left this season, particularly not as a starter. I wonder if they would transition him to the MLB bullpen if they like what they see in a start or two.

In a related note for other players in the Nats’ system, Lopez isn’t on the 40-man, so a DFA is coming (or a trade). I would guess that Nick Lee, Difo, and de los Santos would be among the most endangered, unless Gott could be moved to the 60-day or something (I haven’t heard anything about his injury).

      1. Will says:
        July 18, 2016 at 4:05 am

My guess is Nick Lee. He’s been very poor this season (4.67 ERA, 29 BB, 1.73 WHIP in 34 IP), and it was already a bit of a puzzling move back when they added him to the 40 man, when he was coming off a decent but unspectacular 2015 season.

Now that Solis has shown he’s big league-ready, there’s no need for another LHP from the bullpen, especially with Matt Grace back in the picture.

Don’t forget the Bryan Harper emergence as well. Yeah, I was also among the surprised when Lee got added to the 40-man. I didn’t think there was going to be much Rule 5 threat of losing him.
