“No, no, I insist: You take this gift.” That was the 9th inning in a nutshell as the Chiefs tried to give away the game in top half with two-run HR served by Rafael Martin but instead got the gamewinner on a two-out, three-base error that enabled Matt Skole to score all the way from first. Taylor Hill shook off a leadoff HR to open the game to pitch seven innings of two-run ball on three hits and a walk. He struck out three and was leading 4-2. Koda Glover mowed ’em down in the 8th and was apparently too gassed by those nine (9) pitches to pitch the 9th. Matt Williams Billy Gardner instead went to Martin, who blew his fourth save but got the win. Skole reached base four times with a single, homer, and two walks to lead the Syracuse offense, which totaled six hits and six walks and got the benefit of four passed balls and two hit batsman (this guy →). Roster moves: IF Jason Martinson activated from the 7-Day DL.

The Curve scored seven times in the first five innings and chugged to a 9-3 win over the Senators. Boone Whiting lost for the second time in three starts as he was charged with six runs (two earned) on four hits and four walks over four-plus innings. Neftali Soto singled three times while Rafael Bautista singled and doubled to lead Harrisburg’s nine-hit parade.

The Potomac ‘pen collapsed in the late innings, giving up two runs in the 7th and 8th innings to turn a 3-1 lead into 5-3 defeat by Winston-Salem. The implosion spoiled another strong outing by Erick Fedde, who let in one unearned run on four hits and a walk over six innings while striking out five. Wirkin “For The Weekend” retired just one of four batters faced to blow the save while the loss went to Tommy Peterson for allowing two runs (both unearned) to score in the 8th. Alec Keller and Jose “Orange” Marmolejos both went 2-for-4 with a double to lead the P-Nats attack.

Hagerstown put this one away early with 10 runs in the first two innings and survived a late charge from Asheville for a 10-5 victory. Taylor Guilbeau got his first “W” with two runs allowed on four hits and a walk over five innings. Matt Page, Ian Sagdal, and Angelo La Bruna each had three hits and combined for six RBI and five runs scored as the Suns racked up 14 hits and five walks total on the night.

The Black Bears struck for five runs in the 5th and held off the Doubledays for a 5-3 win. Dane Dunning tossed three scoreless innings with one hit and one whiff in his NYPL debut. Hayden Howard took the loss, giving up five runs on eight hits and a walk over and inning and a third in relief. Dan Johnson and Ryan Ripken both went 2-for-4 to account for half of Auburn’s eight hits, as the Doubledays went just 1-for-7 with RISP and left on seven baserunners.
