Syracuse 5 Durham 4
• Hill 7IP, 3H, 2R, 1ER, BB, 3K, HR
• Glover (H, 2) 1IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 1K
• Martin (BS, 4; W, 2-3) 1IP, 1H, 2R, 2ER, BB, 0K, HR
• Skole 2-3, 3R, 2B, 2BB, HR, RBI
• Severino 2-4, R, RBI

“No, no, I insist: You take this gift.” That was the 9th inning in a nutshell as the Chiefs tried to give away the game in top half with two-run HR served by Rafael Martin but instead got the gamewinner on a two-out, three-base error that enabled Matt Skole to score all the way from first. Taylor Hill shook off a leadoff HR to open the game to pitch seven innings of two-run ball on three hits and a walk. He struck out three and was leading 4-2. Koda Glover mowed ’em down in the 8th and was apparently too gassed by those nine (9) pitches to pitch the 9th. Matt Williams Billy Gardner instead went to Martin, who blew his fourth save but got the win. Skole reached base four times with a single, homer, and two walks to lead the Syracuse offense, which totaled six hits and six walks and got the benefit of four passed balls and two hit batsman (this guy →). Roster moves: IF Jason Martinson activated from the 7-Day DL.

Altoona 9 Harrisburg 3
• Whiting (L, 0-2) 4+ IP, 4H, 6R, 2ER, 4BB, 0K, WP
• Self 3IP, 4H, R, ER, 0BB, 1K, 2-2 IR-S
• Soto 3-4, RBI
• Bautista 2-4, 2B

The Curve scored seven times in the first five innings and chugged to a 9-3 win over the Senators. Boone Whiting lost for the second time in three starts as he was charged with six runs (two earned) on four hits and four walks over four-plus innings. Neftali Soto singled three times while Rafael Bautista singled and doubled to lead Harrisburg’s nine-hit parade.

Winston-Salem 5 Potomac 3
• Fedde 6IP, 4H, 1R, 0ER, BB, 5K
• Estevez (BS, 2) ⅓ IP, 1H, 2R, 2ER, 2BB, 0K
• Peterson (L, 0-1) 1⅔ IP, 1H, 2R, 0ER, 0BB, 2K, HBP, WP, 1-0 IR-S
• Keller 2-4, 2B
• Marmolejos 2-4, R, 2B, RBI

The Potomac ‘pen collapsed in the late innings, giving up two runs in the 7th and 8th innings to turn a 3-1 lead into 5-3 defeat by Winston-Salem. The implosion spoiled another strong outing by Erick Fedde, who let in one unearned run on four hits and a walk over six innings while striking out five. Wirkin “For The Weekend” retired just one of four batters faced to blow the save while the loss went to Tommy Peterson for allowing two runs (both unearned) to score in the 8th. Alec Keller and Jose “Orange” Marmolejos both went 2-for-4 with a double to lead the P-Nats attack.

Hagerstown 10 Asheville 5
• Guilbeau (W, 1-1) 5IP, 4H, 2R, 2ER, BB, K, 2WP
• Howell 3IP, 5H, 0R, BB, 3K, WP
• La Bruna 3-3, R, 2B, BB, 2RBI
• Page 3-3, 2R, 2BB
• Sagdal 3-5, 2R, 3B, 4RBI

Hagerstown put this one away early with 10 runs in the first two innings and survived a late charge from Asheville for a 10-5 victory. Taylor Guilbeau got his first “W” with two runs allowed on four hits and a walk over five innings. Matt Page, Ian Sagdal, and Angelo La Bruna each had three hits and combined for six RBI and five runs scored as the Suns racked up 14 hits and five walks total on the night.

West Virginia 5 Auburn 3
• Dunning 3IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 1K
• Howard (L, 0-1) 1⅓ IP, 8H, 5R, 5ER, BB, 0K
• Serrata 2⅔ IP, 2H, 0R, 0BB, 0K, 2-0 IR-S
• Johnson 2-4, R, OF assist at 2B
• Ripken 2-4, 2B, RBI

The Black Bears struck for five runs in the 5th and held off the Doubledays for a 5-3 win. Dane Dunning tossed three scoreless innings with one hit and one whiff in his NYPL debut. Hayden Howard took the loss, giving up five runs on eight hits and a walk over and inning and a third in relief. Dan Johnson and Ryan Ripken both went 2-for-4 to account for half of Auburn’s eight hits, as the Doubledays went just 1-for-7 with RISP and left on seven baserunners.

Another shake up is in order.

Marmolejos hit his 32nd double, which is good enough for 3rd most in the entire minor leagues. He’s hit .322/.366/.503 since June 1. What more does he have to prove?

Joining him, Erick Fedde has earned a promotion. He’s been unhittable over the past 2 months. In his past 7 starts, he’s thrown 33.2 IP and posted a miniscule ERA of 0.82, 7 BB and 31 K.

Replacing Marmolejos, Matthew Page could take over 1B duties for Potomac. His bat (.280/.367/.458) is better than anyone in Potomac not named Max.

Also, it’s probably a bit premature to call for a promotion but Branden Boggetto is doing his best Max Schrock impression in the GCL, batting .485/.541/.545 so far. He’s hit safely in 8 of his 9 starts and gotten multiple hits in 6 of those games. Now that Schrock ended his multi-hit game streak, Boggetto’s current 4 game streak is probably the longest in our system.

If the Nats make a major trade by Aug. 1, my guess would be that Fedde could be the pivotal piece. I’m not trying to wish him away by any means and am very pleased with what he’s showing. The guess would be that they consider Giolito, Turner, Robles, and Lopez untouchable, though, and Fedde would probably be next on the list; either Fedde or Voth. (I’ve seen a fair amount of trade speculation on Lopez, but considering the run he’s on, they better be getting a superstar in return if he’s part of it.)

Most think the big club needs another piece in its bullpen. How will they know until they give Glover and/or Lopez a look, though? Glover has barely even given up hits at AAA, much less runs (0.00), although he hasn’t been striking out as many as he did in the lower minors.

Orange is not hitting substantially better than he did a year ago (.870 OPS vs .848), when he stayed a Hagerstown all season. His problem is being tied to one position and they guy ahead of him at AA having just played in the Eastern League All Star game.

Here’s my missing persons subject of the day: Mat Latos. The Nats supposedly signed him three weeks ago. I’m not a Latos fan and would hope that Giolito would have higher priority as a rotation replacement. But Latos isn’t even on the Syracuse roster, three weeks after signing.

Speaking of rosters and Reds retreads, Arroyo is no longer on the GCL Nats roster. He had one terrible start, one good start, didn’t do anything for the last two weeks, and has now disappeared. I hope his long career didn’t end with a couple of forgotten starts in the GCL.

      Se La vie
What is worthy of an arm to advance ?
Gilibeau needs 6-7 IP outings ?
Same for mills in auburn ???

My guess is Arroyo hurt himself again. The lack of information is a real indictment of how bad the Nats beat writers are at covering the minors.

We’ll probably see an announcement of his retirement when he’s ready to admit defeat.
