What the Norfolk? Syracuse got both shutdown pitching and lights-out hitting in an 8-0 series-opening win. Taylor Hill, Sam Runion, and Bryan Harper combined on the seven-hit shutout. Hill went the first seven innings and allowed all seven Tide hits along with a walk and three whiffs for his fourth win. Runion and Harper made the final two donuts in the 8th and 9th respectively. Matt Skole, Brian Goodwin, and Steve Lombardozzi each had three hits in the Chiefs’ 14-hit assault, with Skole and Goodwin both doubling and driving in three runs. RHP Rafael Martin has been added to the I.L. roster for the AAA All-Star Game next Wednesday.

The Senators broke open a 1-0 game with three consecutive crooked numbers in the middle innings to sink the Seawolves, 14-3. Tyler Mapes won his eighth game with seven innings of two-run ball on five hits and a walk while setting five down on strikes. John Simms mopped up and had his outing spoiled with a two-out solo shot in the 8th. Tablesetters Rafael Bautista and Andrew Stevenson combined for seven hits while cleanup man Neftali Soto drove in seven runs with an Earl Weaver special and a grand slam to lead the 16-hit assault on Erie pitchers. Roster moves: RHP Neil Holland assigned to the GCL for MiLB rehab.

New guy Mark Blackmar gave up the lone Blue rocks run on one hit and four walks over seven innings. Wirkin “For The Weekend” Estevez worked around two hits and a walk to close it out. Jose “Orange” Marmolejos drove in four with a sac fly and a three-run bomb (HR #10) while Osvaldo Abreu and Max Schrock both added two hits to pace the P-Nats attack.

Hagerstown got a pair of six-run innings in the 2nd and 5th innings to demolish Delmarva, 16-5. Taylor Guilbeau didn’t go the requisite five innings, chased with one out in the 4th and charged with four runs on nine hits and two walks. Mick VanVossen stranded two while finishing the inning and struck out six of nine batters faced over two and 2/3rds to earn the win. Grant Borne got the rulebook save with one run allowed over the final three innings. Matthew Page and Randy Encarnacion both homered while Jakson Reetz led the hit column with two singles and a double; all three Suns drove in three runs (hey, that rhymes!).

This is the annual reminder of the New York-Penn League’s packed schedule as the Doubledays got the first of just four (five if you count the All-Star game) scheduled days off over 81 days. Second-place Auburn visits first-place State College for the next three before returning to Falcon Field for three next week against Vermont.
