Syracuse 8 Norfolk 0
• Hill (W, 4-8) 7IP, 7H, 0R, BB, 3K
• Runion 1IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 0K
• Skole 3-4, R, 2B, HR, SF, 3RBI
• Goodwin 3-5, 2B, 3RBI
• Lombardozzi 3-4, R, RBI
What the Norfolk? Syracuse got both shutdown pitching and lights-out hitting in an 8-0 series-opening win. Taylor Hill, Sam Runion, and Bryan Harper combined on the seven-hit shutout. Hill went the first seven innings and allowed all seven Tide hits along with a walk and three whiffs for his fourth win. Runion and Harper made the final two donuts in the 8th and 9th respectively. Matt Skole, Brian Goodwin, and Steve Lombardozzi each had three hits in the Chiefs’ 14-hit assault, with Skole and Goodwin both doubling and driving in three runs. RHP Rafael Martin has been added to the I.L. roster for the AAA All-Star Game next Wednesday.
Harrisburg 14 Erie 3
• Mapes (W, 8-6) 7IP, 5H, 2R, 2ER, BB, 5K
• Simms 2IP, 1H, 1R, 1ER, 0BB, 1K, HR
• Bautista 4-5, 3R, RBI, 2SB
• Stevenson 3-5, 3R, SB
• Soto 2-4, 3R, BB, 2HR, 7RBI
The Senators broke open a 1-0 game with three consecutive crooked numbers in the middle innings to sink the Seawolves, 14-3. Tyler Mapes won his eighth game with seven innings of two-run ball on five hits and a walk while setting five down on strikes. John Simms mopped up and had his outing spoiled with a two-out solo shot in the 8th. Tablesetters Rafael Bautista and Andrew Stevenson combined for seven hits while cleanup man Neftali Soto drove in seven runs with an Earl Weaver special and a grand slam to lead the 16-hit assault on Erie pitchers. Roster moves: RHP Neil Holland assigned to the GCL for MiLB rehab.
Potomac 8 Wilmington 1
• Blackmar (W, 1-0) 7IP, 1H, 1R, 1ER, 4BB, 2K
• Estevez 2IP, 2H, 0R, BB, 0K
• Marmolejos 1-2, R, BB, SF, HR, 4RBI
• Abreu 2-4, 2R, 2B, RBI, SB
• Schrock 2-5, 2R
Likewise in Woodbridge, except Wilmington had the early 1-0 advantage before Potomac put up three in the 4th and five in the 5th to take the game, 8-1 and the series, 3-1. New guy Mark Blackmar gave up the lone Blue rocks run on one hit and four walks over seven innings. Wirkin “For The Weekend” Estevez worked around two hits and a walk to close it out. Jose “Orange” Marmolejos drove in four with a sac fly and a three-run bomb (HR #10) while Osvaldo Abreu and Max Schrock both added two hits to pace the P-Nats attack.
Hagerstown 16 Delmarva 5
• Guilbeau 3⅓ IP, 9H, 4R, 3ER, 2BB, 2K
• VanVossen (W, 3-2) 2⅔ IP, 0H, 0R, BB, 6K, 2-0 IR-S
• Page 2-3, 2R, HR, SF, 3RBI
• Reetz 3-5, R, 2B, 3RBI
• Encarnacion 2-6, 3R, HR, 3RBI
Hagerstown got a pair of six-run innings in the 2nd and 5th innings to demolish Delmarva, 16-5. Taylor Guilbeau didn’t go the requisite five innings, chased with one out in the 4th and charged with four runs on nine hits and two walks. Mick VanVossen stranded two while finishing the inning and struck out six of nine batters faced over two and 2/3rds to earn the win. Grant Borne got the rulebook save with one run allowed over the final three innings. Matthew Page and Randy Encarnacion both homered while Jakson Reetz led the hit column with two singles and a double; all three Suns drove in three runs (hey, that rhymes!).
Auburn – OFF DAY
This is the annual reminder of the New York-Penn League’s packed schedule as the Doubledays got the first of just four (five if you count the All-Star game) scheduled days off over 81 days. Second-place Auburn visits first-place State College for the next three before returning to Falcon Field for three next week against Vermont.
I hadn’t noticed earlier, but Robles is off to a slow start at Potomac.
Just goes to show that not every 19-year old phenom is ready for the big leagues. 🙂
What is considered slow for Robles is considered decent for just about everyone else.
He’s batting .227/.292/.341. That .633 OPS is better than Bautista, and almost identical to Taylor’s .638 OPS in Washington.
Fortunately, though, it’s still way too early to draw any conclusions. Were Robles to go 4 for 4 tonight, he’d be batting .292, and we’d be talking about how quickly he’s adapted to the promotion.
Taylor makes his AAA debut last night, playing CF, and Turner was back at SS. I guess they are not going to make another move until the ASB–and it would not shock me to see Taylor go right back. He seems to have been sent down more to make room for another reliever than to give Turner his chance.
I got the sense that the Nats may make at least one move, maybe two today. Dusty is not happy with a short bench and Giolito will not be used for the rest of the Mets series. Guessing that Turner comes up today and maybe Martin, and that Giolito and Solis get sent back to AAA.
Will be interesting to see who the Nats 5th starter will be after the ASB if Ross isn’t available. Don’t think it will be Giolito. Guessing either Voth or Lopez.
Giolito certainly did not look ready for prime time last night.
It’s possible that they will option Giolito through the all-star break so they can fill a bench spot with either Turner or Taylor. Giolito wouldn’t be starting in that period anyway. Some sort of move seems all the more likely with Zim ailing. They need to keep the bullpen full, though, particularly since such a cattle call out there on Thursday.
Taylor can’t return to the Nats for 10 days after he was sent down to Cuse, unless someone on the 25 man roster goes on the DL. So, unless someone was injured last night. Turner will likely get the call up today.
It’s incredible how up and down so many of their relievers have been this year. Just when Solis looked ready to become a bullpen mainstay, he goes off the rails.
Interesting michael A hit 3 hole
Add Mark Blackmar to the list of reclamation arms from other organizations. I’m losing track of them, nor do I have any idea how the powers that be see them in the grand scheme of things. Jaron Long in particular seems to be making a mark. This organization seems to have an uncanny ability to spot promising arms.
Turner and MAT recalled to DC. Ryan Zimmerman to the DL. Giolito back to Cuse.
The come off the ASB with a 3 game series. Then, a day off. They won’t need a 5th starter until July 24th. Ross may/will be back by then.
Ty
Mat. Latos??
