Caleb Ramsey’s two-out double drove in the gamewinner as the Chiefs walked off in the 10th, 3-2. Both teams scored two early — Syracuse in the 1st, Louisville in the 2nd — after which the game became a pitcher’s duel. Starter Austin Voth went six innings with the two Bats runs let in on five hits and three walks while striking out six. Erik Davis, Nick Masset, Rafael Martin, and Aaron Laffey each turned in a scoreless inning, with Laffey getting the win. Matt den Dekker went 2-for-4 and scored the decisive run while Brian Goodwin went 2-for-5 with a stolen base to lead the Chiefs’ seven-hit, five-walk offense. Roster move: IF Steve Lombardozzi assigned from Washington.

Harrisburg gave starter Greg Ross four runs early and he responded with seven scoreless innings in a 5-3 win over Hartford. Ross gave up three hits and a walk and struck out two as he won his first AA game of ’16. The Yard Goats railroaded Koda Glover for three runs in the 9th to break up the shutout bid. Kevin Keyes, Wilmer Difo, and Chris Bostick each had two hits and scored a run as they doubled, tripled, and homered respectively to pace the Sens offense. Roster move: OF Zach Collier placed on 7-Day DL; OF-1B Kevin Keyes reassigned from Syracuse.

The P-Nats rallied for three in the 7th but fell one run short in a 4-3 loss to the Pelicans. Philips Valdez took the loss with three runs allowed on seven hits and one walk over four innings. Jose “Orange” Marmolejos and Drew Ward both singled and walked as the Potomac batters were held to six hits total.

Dakota Bacus got the spot start and put in four innings of two-run ball on two hits and two walks while striking out four. The loss went to R.C. Orlan as he gave up the go-ahead run in the 5th on two hits and two walks. Starter Matt DeRosier gave up two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out four. Mariano Rivera III, one of five All-Stars named yesterday, bookended runs in the 8th and 10th to blow the save and lose the “W.” The loss went to Jorge Pantoja, who gave up three straight singles after getting the first out in the 12th. Austin Davidson led the Suns’ 14-hit parade with two singles, a double, and a homer, and scored three times while Victor Robles reached base five times with three singles, a walk, and a hit by pitch. Roster moves: RHP James Bourque reassigned from Auburn; RHP Andrew Lee placed on 7-Day DL
Lombo’s back! I know a lot of folks will be excited to have one of the folk heroes of 2012 back in the fold, but from Lombo’s perspective, why the Nats? There wouldn’t appear to be much of an MLB path for him with a club that can’t find a place for Trea Turner and has young INF prospects like Bostick, Difo, Schrock, Abreu, Mejia, et al. Maybe it’s just a nod to an organization that treated him right.
You have to wonder if the end is near for Kevin Keyes. He’s always shown just enough pop to be tantalizing, but not enough consistent contact to get over the hump. He had a hot start at Harrisburg but really struggled at Syracuse. Good for him landing in AA with a two-hit night.
What’s the story on Andrew Lee and the DL? Hope it’s something relatively minor.
The end may be near for Kevin Keyes with the Nats, but he will continue to get shots with other organizations. Destin Hood is in AAA for the Marlins, Eury Perez is playing AAA for the Astros, Zach Walters is playing AAA for the Dodgers, even Chris Marrero is still playing – AAA for the Red Sox.
Speaking of Nats prospects that washed out, notice that Matt Purke pitched for the White Sox last night? Didn’t even realize he had made the big leagues. Congrats to him!
I guess Purke finally got healthy. He demonstrates the folly of putting too much faith in minor league stats. Purke’s AAA numbers for the ChiSox were pretty meh before he was recalled, but I gather their coaches were liking what they saw when he was on the mound.
It’s just too bad that the Nats didn’t try converting him to relief last year.
I was excited as anybody when Purke was drafted.
following his progress and listening to scouting reports lead me to believe he never regained the bite on his slider that made him an elite prospect.
after all is said and one I doubt that losing him will hurt that much.
Lombo and Walters both left in trades for established players (Fister and Cabrera). In fact, a lot of folks (including yours truly) wondered why the Tigers took Lombo instead of Walters.
Why the Nats for Lombo? I gather it was a matter of who was willing to sign him away from Indy ball (when I saw he was doing well there a couple of weeks ago, I was hoping they’d pick him up).
I’ve always rooted for him, but as a career negative b/WAR player both offensively and defensively his options are going to be pretty limited at the MLB level.
On the radio this morning, Rizzo made it clear that Lombo was signed “to add depth at the AAA level”. While he could’ve played up the feel good story of a local kid re-signing with his initial organization, Rizzo left little doubt that the Lombo signing was just to make sure that Cuse has enough infielders (particularly when Turner comes up permanently) and nothing beyond that.
