Louisville scored first with a run in the top of the 7th, but Syracuse answered with three in the bottom of the 7th to take the series opener, 3-1. The rally made a winner out of Taylor Hill, who gave up the Bats run on six hits and one walk while fanning two. Bryan Harper rolled three groundouts in the 8th for the hold while Rafael Martin set the side down in order in the 9th for save no. 11. Brian Goodwin plated the tying and go-ahead runs with a two-run single followed by Matt Skole’s RBI single to account for the three Chiefs runs. Goodwin and Trea Turner both went 2-for-3 with a walk to lead the nine-hit parade for Syracuse.
Roster moves: LHP Matt Grace, RHP Trevor Gott placed on the 7-Day DL; LHP Bryan Harper, RHP Jaron Long reassigned from Harrisburg; SS Trea Turner optioned from Washington.
Harrisburg – OFF DAY

Myrtle Beach vs. Potomac – PPD
Game three of the four-game series was postponed due to rain on Monday night. They’ll make it up tonight with a doubleheader.

• Gutierrez 3-6, R, 2B, SB
They picked up where they left off with the Suns trailing, 6-5 after five full. Both teams doubled their output over the next three and a half innings, which gave the Tourists a 12-10 win. Grant Borne “started” and was manhandled for six runs (four earned) on seven hits and a walk over two-plus innings. Luis Torres let in one of two inherited runners thanks to an error by Edwin Lora while completing the 8th. The loss went to Matt DeRosier, who gave up the first six runs over three and 2/3rds on April 28. Max “For Those About To” Schrock collected five singles to lead the 18-hit Hagerstown attack.
Hagerstown 12 Asheville 4 – GAME TWO
• Baez 3⅔ IP, 6H, 4R, 4ER, 3BB, 6K

Hagerstown fell behind 4-0 after four innings, then went to town on Asheville’s pitchers as they scored 12 unanswered runs from the 6th to the 9th innings for 12-4 win in the regularly scheduled game. Joan Baez’s struggles continued as he was bounced after three and 2/3rds and the four Tourist runs allowed on six hits and three walks, though he did fan six. Trey Lambert stranded a runner for Baez in the 4th and piutched three scoreless for the win. Max Schrock drove in three and notched eight total bases with two doubles and a homer to lead the Suns offense again. Roster move: RHP Philip Walby (an American, not Australian) assigned from Washington.
Other Transaction News
• LHPs Connor Bach (Hagerstown), Noelle Arguelles (signed in April) released
• RHP Tim Alderson (Harrisburg) activated from 7-Day DL, released
Something is a little manky with that first Hagerstown link. Schrock looks ready for a promotion. I’d expect they make room for him in POT by the end of the month
Fixed.
I’ll admit it, they caught me sleeping on Tommy Peterson, yet another of the fast-rising 2015 draftees. Had a 1.01 WHIP at Hagerstown and five saves.
Too bad about Connor Bach, who had a promising year at Hagerstown last season but couldn’t repeat it and got passed by a number of the 2015 draftee lefties. His brother, Carter, will probably be drafted this weekend.
Jaron Long had already logged some AAA time last season, so good to see him quickly advancing back to that level. I still can’t understand why the Yanks released him, even though his dad went to work for the Mets. He’s more than just a charity signee.
Too bad Schrock couldn’t manage more than eight hits in a doubleheader. Low energy. He’s got to be wondering what he has to do to get promoted.
Log jam @ upper levels
Unless brass moves in from a couple
Org guys
I think there’s about to be a shake-up with some of the “org guy” position players at AA and AAA. Lower down, the “problem” with promoting Schrock is that Abreu and Mejia in the middle infield at Potomac aren’t org guys, but neither have they distinguished themselves enough to warrant promotion. Masters is showing a little pop, but not average. But something is going to give soon, as Schrock has nothing else left to prove at Hagerstown.
What Schrock has going for him is positional versatility. On the other hand, just because he is hitting and taking walks does not mean he cannot benefit from continued reps at hagerstown. It’s not like he is outhitting Daniel Murphy.
As for Mejia, he was one of the best average-power hitters in the Nats system last year and plays middle infield. OK, his defense is not David Masters. But he has hit fairly well in recent weeks, enough that he is not to be given up on. Same with Abreu. He is a talented middle infield prospect who just needs a little more time.
It will work itself out, and it will have to. Dalton Dulin is waiting to get to Hagerstown, and deserves not to have to start the year in Auburn if he is healthy.
As for Masters, when a guy who fields like like that can hit two home runs in a game, he stays on the island.
We do obsess here over the promotion of Robles, but I would not be surprised to see Wiseman promoted ahead of him. Rhett is really turning it on and is older and a rightfielder and college product.
Even sooner may well be Matt Page; he is old for Hagerstown, but a 1B-OF and has demonstrated in enough of a sample size that he is ready to go to a more age-appropriate level. Page was drafted with a power bat pedigree. He has yet to show that, but the season is young.
Agreed about Robles/Wiseman. The former has cooled a bit since his torrid start, and there really isn’t any need to rush him.
Yeah, Robles is all the way “down” to .316/.413/.475. I think he follows the conga line to Potomac whenever Stevenson gets his rightful promotion to Harrisburg.
I’d actually be a little more cautious with Wiseman and Page, even though they’re older. They’re just now starting to “get it”; Robles has gotten it from day one. And neither are yet clicking in terms of power in the way we’d like to see. Davidson is doing better on that score. He’s got half the sample of most but leads Hagerstown in SLG by a fair margin.
There is a whole two teams of players that could field Auburn. Once the draft is done and the early wave of signings in, we may witness the demouement of higher profile players like Jake Johannsen and even Robbie Dickey.
With the return of Vettleson, Benincasa, and Brady (now the ‘lead’ in the Escobar deal) off the DL, the highest profile wounded remains Hector Silvestre, not so far from Mills Cup 2014 heroics. Kylin Turnbull is another lingering on the DL, who was but a glimpse of potential before disappearing.
One has to imagine that the numbers will push out other minor league veteran types like Gutierrez and Masset. A big, big round of applause to the Lerners and Nats management for the medical team they installed this winter. It has been a conspicuously more healthy year in the system, and that makes a huge difference in development, not just contention at the big league level.
Though it has not yet been mentioned, I suspect that Fedde to the DL is simply cooling his heels to keep his innings count low. He put together a couple of very impressive starts and we should have reason for optimism.
The mendoza rumors as a supp pick by Nats
Reminds me of the june they were looking at
Kid who ended up going to Brewers
Draft 18-20 arms to find two
Classic scouting line .
Still wonder where the IU Hoosier lefty
Ends up in mid rounds
The same people who ran an (unprecedented for the team) successful draft last year are running it this year. The only high schooler who gets taken in the earliest round is an easy sign or someone who dropped out of the top 5-10 improbably.
The International signing period is now the Nats high school draft. I expect the team to surprise us with how much they invest there. For that reason, with two first round slots, signable college products mean bidding high for Watson and Schrock types in later rounds with cash on hand. If that is their philosophy, they will add a lot of depth and depth that can play now.
Pundits need not think. So they match up Nats with a Boras type or a pitcher with a bad arm. It does not always work out.
Arguelles released so they can sign another
ex Royal farm hand . That’s a joke Luke.
How many ex Royal hands have passed through
Nats farm?
Of course the Nats might draft the kid with the
name Lauer out of Kent State for those fans
Who cannot roll their Rs
Quite a few – does seem like Wilmington is the minors analog to Cincinnati.
