Columbus 4 Syracuse 3
• Voth (L, 3-3) 7IP, 4H, 4R, 4ER, BB, 5K
• Gutierrez 1IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 1K
• Martinson 2-5, R, 2B, 2RBI
• Goodwin 2-5, R, RBI
The Chiefs’ circle of the drain took another spin with a 4-3 loss to the Clippers, the seventh straight defeat. Austin Voth went seven innings, shutting out Columbus for six of them, but the four-run 5th rigged him with his third loss with four hits (three doubles) and one walk allowed. He struck out five. J.C. Gutierrez both followed with a goose egg, but the Syracuse offense continues to struggle. While they drew 10 walks, just one of them scored and the team left on 14 while going 3-for-14 with RISP. Jason Martinson and Brian Goodwin both went 2-for-5 with a run scored to lead the seven-hit effort.
Harrisburg 2 Reading 0
• Ross (W 3-0) 7IP, 3H, 0R, 2BB, 5K
• Glover (SV, 4) 1⅓ IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 2K
• Difo 2-3, R, BB, SB, 2CS, E(15)
• Kieboom 2-3, R
Greg Ross continues to dominate in his return to AA, tossing another seven scoreless innings as Harrisburg shut out Reading, 2-0. Ross gave up three hits and two walks while striking out five to win his third straight start since his callup from Potomac. Wander Suero and Koda Glover combined for two perfect innings to earn the hold and save, respectively. Wilmer Difo and Spencer Kieboom both went 2-for-3 with a run scored to pace the nine-hit, four-walk offense.
Myrtle Beach 2 Potomac 1 – GAME ONE
• Williams (L, 0-2) 6IP, 4H, 2R, 2ER, BB, 6K, HR
• Peterson 1IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 1K
• Ward 1-2, BB
• Carey 1-2, BB
Since swapping places with Greg Ross, Austen Williams hasn’t been as brilliant but has pitched well enough win, twice. And has lost, twice – the latest by a 2-1 decision at the wings of the Pelicans. Williams gave up both Myrtle Beach runs on four hits (one HR) and a walk while setting down six on strikes over six innings. The P-Nats mustered just three singles and a double while walking four times, with Drew Ward and Dale Carey the only two batters to reach base twice.
Myrtle Beach 4 Potomac 0 – GAME TWO
• Reyes (L, 3-7) 5IP, 5H, 4R, 4ER, 4BB, 3K
• Spann 2IP, 3H, 0R, 0BB, 2K
• Marmolejos 2-3
• Masters 1-3
Myrtle Beach got four in the 3rd and it was more than enough to secure the doubleheader sweep with a 4-0 shutout of Potomac. Luis Reyes took the loss with all four Pelicans runs allowed on five hits and four walks over five innings. Jose “Orange” Marmolejos went 2-for-3; the rest of the team went 3-for-23 with two walks.
Greenville 7 Hagerstown 1
• Bourque (L, 0-3) 4IP, 7H, 3R, 3ER, BB, 3K, HR
• Rivera 1IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 1K
• Wiseman 1-3, BB, OF assist at 3B
• Lora 1-3, R
The Suns lost, 7-1, but thanks to Delmarva dropping the opener of its doubleheader, Hagerstown clinched the first-half division title. James Bourque lost for the third time in as many starts with three runs let in on seven hits and a walk over four innings. He struck out three. Only Mariano Rivera III managed to stall the Drive with a scoreless 9th as Greenville piled on four more against Luis Torres and Taylor Guilbeau. Rhett Wiseman was the only batter to reach base twice as the Suns were held to four hits and three walks.
Auburn 5 Batavia 1
• Mills (W, 1-0) 5IP, 6H, 0R, 3BB, 5K
• Fuentes (SV, 1) 3IP, 2H, R, ER, BB, 3K
• Ripken 2-3, 2B, BB, 2RBI
• La Bruna 2-4, R
• Perkins 1-3, R, BB, 2SB, OF assist at 3B
Auburn completed the two-game sweep of Batavia with a 5-1 win. McKenzie Mills navigated through nine baserunners (six hit, three walks) in five scoreless innings for the win. Steve Fuentes gave up the lone run on two hits and a walk while earning the save. Ryan Ripken (turns 23 next month) continues to punish significantly younger pitchers with a single, double, and a walk and two RBI, as did Angelo La Bruna (turned 24 in April) with a pair of singles as the Doubledays took advantage of seven walks and an error to score five times on six hits. Roster moves: As noted in the comments, 3B Sheldon “Come On Feel The” Neuse was signed by Washington and assigned to the Doubledays roster.
DSL Update
The D-Nats dropped four of six to fall to 5-7 on the season thus far. Longtime DSLer Angel Guillen (19, but in his third season at the level) has struck out 12 in ten scoreless innings across two starts to lead the pitchers. Returnees Santo Falcon (19) Brailin Mesa (18), and Jesus Morales (18) are each posting .800+ OPS marks over the first two weeks to lead the hitters.
Quick draft update: Officially 7 of 11 signed and factoring the overage without paying draft pick penalties, the Nats are currently +$922,574
Luzardo’s 1.4 million is probably accurate, but still unofficial. That would put it at $158,574. They would still have Dunning, Banks, and Harris to go. I hope they can save another 650-700K. That would give them the ability to throw almost a million at someone from the later rounds (Probably Morgan Cooper and/or Armond Upshaw).
Thanks John, that’s helpful to see it all in one place. Seems like they can announce Luzardo now that they have the room under contract.
I also have been thinking that the signings indicate an over slot deal from late. The rumors pre-draft were McFarland, and I read that they had him in for a private workout, but his advisor seemed to squash that just after the draft.
Where are you getting your figures?
According to http://www.mlbdailydish.com/2016/6/12/11909596/2016-mlb-draft-draft-signings-tracker, we’ve signed 6/11 (excluding Neuse and Noll, including Luzardo), and we’re currently 436.3k OVERslot. Were Neuse and Noll significantly underslot?
Wally: I do not think it matters where you are in terms of slot until the deadline. This is another reason why I am hesitant on the Luzardo number. There is no reason not to announce it that I can see. It may be a matter of dotting I’s and crossing T’s, but I want to wait and see before I get it in my head that it is done.
Will: All figures are from BA and MLB.com. Really BA is not “official”, but they have a great track record, so I trust their info. That site you mentioned is probably accurate, but I’m not comfortable calling it “official”.
I think Banks will want over slot, likely the reason he hasn’t signed yet. His cash may be tied to savings on Dunning. We’ll see.
I don’t think they’ll end up with enough extra to get McFarland. He’s got the same “adviser” as Pint and some other high-profile midwesterners. The Nats just aren’t going to have an extra $800K-1M, if he’s looking for something like that. The best they could probably do would be $400-500K, but then that wouldn’t leave them anything for guys like Upshaw and Cooper, if they are looking for something extra. I do think that McFarland looks like something special, but I don’t think they’re going to have enough if he genuinely thinks he’s going to get 2d-round money.
Plus Mayo and Callis tweeted about Noll and Neuse signing
Marmolejos is still hitting the ball extremely well. He’s hitting .349/.408/.524 in June, including .529/.579/.765 in his last 5 games.

Signings will be announced en masse any day now. Nats usually do that around this week.
The late bonus signees last year, Watson and Schrock, were not announced until later. That includes those coming back from the World Series as well. last year it was Wisemann and Stevenson. This year there are two, as well, most importantly Dunning. So everything in its appointed time. Got to get [players on the field and not waste the developmental calendar if there is no injury. Viera ought to be no more than a connecting flight.
