Shuffling the Deck
For most of you, this may seem too late, but in the seven seasons I’ve been doing this, it’s only a little bit later than usual. While it may seem related to the news that Lucas Giolito will debut tonight, I’d argue it has more to do with the last of the signings coming in and room needing to be made. Rather than clutter up today’s news & notes, which have been abbreviated, here’s a rundown:
SYRACUSE
• RHP Rafael Martin recalled to Washington
• RHP J.C. Gutierrez, OF Tony Campana, 3B Scott Sizemore released
• IF Christopher Bostick, OF Zach Collier, RHP Reynaldo Lopez promoted from Harrisburg
HARRISBURG
• RHP Lucas Giolito recalled to Washington
• RHP Wander Suero placed on 3-Day Temporary Inactive List
• RHPs Boone Whiting and Ryan Brinley, OF Andrew Stevenson, 3B Drew Ward promoted from Potomac
POTOMAC
• RHP Trey Lambert, OF Victor Robles, IF Max Schrock promoted from Hagerstown
HAGERSTOWN
• RHP Robbie Dickey, OF Randy Encarnacion, IF Angelo LaBruna promoted from Auburn
AUBURN
• RHPs Jacob Howell, Phil Morse promoted from the GCL
No word yet on the corresponding moves for Giolito and Martin yet, though it would seem likely that Taylor Jordan will go on the 60-Day DL and perhaps someone else will be DFA’d – perhaps even Martin himself.
And Lopez promoted to Syracuse.
One bit of shuffling that will be interesting to watch will be if/when Giolito goes back down, will it be to Syracuse, or to Harrisburg? Harrisburg seems short a starter, although Simms could easily slide back into the rotation.
Why would the Nats need to DFA Martin?
Once they put Taylor Jordan on the 60 day DL, that clears a spot for Giolito or do they need to make an additional move?
That works for Giolito, but when Pap and Stras come back, something has to give
Pap and Stras are already on the 40 man; so, that would not require DFAing anyone already on the roster.
After Giolito moves up to the 40 man and Taylor Jordan is moved to the 60 day DL; they don’t need to adjust their 40 man, unless someone who is not currently on the 40 man roster is promoted (Voth, Lopez, Glover). Any of those moves do not seem imminent. If/when Trea Turner comes up, no move on the 40 man roster is needed because Turner is already on the 40 man.
When Pap gets activated, barring an injury, either Solis, Belisle or Rivero will get sent down (right now, I think it will be Rivero). When Strasburg gets activated, Giolito will likely get sent down, although the Nats may face a tough call if Giolito pitches well, and Gio Gonzalez continues to struggle.
Ah, of course that’s right. Must have had a brain cramp.
Unless Martin is out of options – so he’d therefore need to be DFA’d to go back down.
Anyone know if he’s out of options? (I don’t think so – he only made his MLB debut last year?)
I don’t think that would apply to this year anyway, since they used an option to send him down out of ST and it is good for the whole year (I think)
That’s correct, Wally, and even after this year, he has another option year remaining. (There’s a sheet in the Big Board spreadsheet — link at the top right of this page — with options information.)
So Taylor Jordan wasn’t just switched to the 60 day DL, but released.
What a shame that injuries derailed his career. It really looked like he might have a successful career.
Wow. That was his second TJ, though, and he really didn’t have much hope of cracking the DC rotation even when healthy. I don’t know when he would have become a minor-league free agent, possibly before his rehab would have been complete.
Anyway, best wishes to Jordan, someone we’ve followed for a long time.
Gotta say, it seems like sort of a jerk move to release someone who is rehabbing an injury he suffered pitching in your organization, especially when transferring him to the 60-day DL would have accomplished exactly the same thing, while letting the guy still have access to your medical/rehab staff, facilities, etc. Hoping there is more to this story (the press release said he “was granted” his release, so perhaps this was requested).
