He walked two and struck out a season-high of eight. Matt Skole homered for the aforementioned two-spot and went 3-for-4 with a double, a walk, and—thanks to Brian Goodwin running ahead of him—a stolen base. Goodwin also reached base four times on a hit by pitch, double, single, and a walk. Jason Martinson also homered to help cover up a team 1-for-12 mark with RISP.

The Legends went full Little League in the bottom of the 9th with an error, two walks, and two wild pitches allowing the Suns to score four times on just two singles to turn a 3-0 shutout bid into a 4-3 walkoff loss. The collapse made a winner out of Grant Borne, who allowed just a walk and a single over four innings while striking out four in relief. Starter Jefry Rodriguez was dinged for three runs on five hits and two walks over the first five innings for a no-decision. Max “For Those About To” Schrock led the hit column with two, while Victor Robles walked and was hit by a pitch twice to reach base three times.
Now that was the dominant outing from Giolito we have all been waiting for. If he were pitching for just about any other organization, he’d likely be on the next plane to join the big club.
Yeah, but Lopez one-upped him in his last start with 13 Ks. Keep up that competition, guys! Giolito’s ERA is down to 2.64 but WHIP is still somewhat elevated at 1.35. He’s getting there. So is Lopez. But the big club’s supposed 5th starter (Roark) just went seven scoreless to lower his ERA to 2.93. There are going to be some interesting decisions in the offseason.
Good pitching all the way around through the organization. Cole had one of his better starts of the season. Daddy Whiting seems to need the challenge of AA. And Borne, the “last” of the four lefties to reach Hagerstown, got his first win. The number of pitchers from the ’15 draft who have already advanced at least this far is phenomenal.
The Nats did so much better at talent evaluation for their later round selections last year than in the three previous drafts. Even with Giolito & Fedde sucking up a lot of the bonus cash and having no #1 pick in 2013, those were some very poor drafts overall.
Did I read that correctly? Robles has been hit by pitches 18 times already this season?
Yes, he was hit by pitches 21 times last year in 61 games… so this is now a new phenomenon.
