Back-to-back three spots in the 6th and 7th innings by the Bison erased an early 3-0 Chiefs lead as Buffalo held on for a 7-5 win over Syracuse. Paolo Espino gave up the first three runs on five hits and a walk over five and 2/3rds innings for the no-decision. Erik Davis walked four of six batters faced and was charged withe the loss when Nick Masset let in both of his inherited runners in the 7th. Scott Sizemore and Matt Skole both doubled and homered and drove in two to pace the Chiefs’ offense. Roster move: SS Trea Turner recalled to Washington.

Harrisburg scored two times twice in three innings before the rains came and suspended play after two and a 1/2 innings. They’ll finish it and play a second seven-inning game… weather permitting.

The P-Nats scored three times in the 2nd to take a 3-2 lead and then got smashed like a sailor on shore leave as the Keys scored 13 unanswered runs to take the series finale, 15-3. Wirkin “For The Weekend” Estevez, lost for third time in five starts with seven runs allowed (two earned) on five hits (two HR) and two walks with three strikeouts. Raudy Read went 3-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base (yes, really) while Bryan Mejia singled twice, scored a run, and drove in a run to lead the Potomac offense. Both committed an error, along with two by Osvaldo Abreu to lead to nine unearned runs by Frederick.

Hagertown continues its march towards a first-half title with its fifth straight win, 6-2 over Columbia. Pedro Avila won for the fourth time with five scoreless innings, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out one. Victor Robles returned to the lineup to walk, single, score twice, and swipe two bags and set the tone for the Suns offense, which saw every batter get a hit and eleven total. Roster Moves: 1B Ryan Ripken reassigned to Auburn; OF Telmito Agustin activated from 7-Day DL

    1. Kudos to Trea on showing so well, 3-for-3 with a walk and a double. He can’t do any more about the situation other than to take advantage of whatever opportunities he’s given. The odds are that he’ll still be back in Syracuse on Monday. But perhaps he’ll force Rizzo to get on with making a trade or something to clear a place for him.

  2. Avila strikes again. It will be interesting to see if the Nats will promote him to Potomac at only 19. He should be sprinting up the prospect lists.

    I would think that Rivera will be getting promoted soon. He’s only given up runs in two appearances all season.

    Nine unearned runs for Potomac? And nine passed balls on the season for Read? Oy.

    1. Do you know Avila’s profile? I know that he is a small guy, but he’s had good K rates. Does he throw hard? What are his better secondary pitches?

    2. Bear in mind, too, that scorekeepers tend to give out WPs whenever there’s a doubt and often don’t have either the time or the access to instant replay.

  3. DSL starts today. The game is going on as I type. No box score yet. The players to watch are Juan Soto OF, Luis Aquino SS, and Elvis Alvarado OF. Edwin Michel is 6’2″ 166 and a 16-year old LHP. Alfonso Hernandez is a LHP born 8-3-99, possibly the youngest player in the league.

    Key guys coming to the GCL that I noticed are P Tomas Alastre (Recall DiPuglia being excited) he turns 18 on June 18 and is 6’4″. Edwin “The Body” Ventura is an 18-year old SS. Interesting that he made it over a bigger signing in Bryan Bencosme. 20-year old RHP Jefry Rosa can hit 100 MPH. He’s a converted infielder that they made a project out of and built up his arm strength. He’ll be old for the level as he turns 21 tomorrow.

    I saw video of Luis Garcia (SS that the Nats are likely to sign on July 2nd) Wow. He has a beautiful, level lefty swing. He’s not big but makes hard, loud contact. He can absolutely fly and has a strong arm from short. He looks like a legit five tool prospect. Only cost $1 million. Ben Badler from BA makes it sound like there are some scouts who prefer him to Maitan.

    Maitain also looked impressive, but really only in power. He could be a legit 30+- home run hitter though. He can’t run and will have to really work to stay in the IF. If he can make contact and fills out like he should he’ll be a star OF IMO.

    Yasel Antuna has some scouts that rave about him and some scouts that do not like him. The Nats are paying $4 million so I am guessing DiPuglia (Who found Boegarts and Robles, and so many others) must love him. I trust him based on his record. The video I saw was impressive. There is pretty good power from both sides already and the swing could improve. There’s some uppercut on both sides. He looks solid at short. He’s a better runner than Maitain, but not close to Garcia. The arm looks good to me from SS or 3B. Switch hitting middle infielders are hard to find. If the swing levels out some, he could be a huge star, but is less likely to reach it than Garcia and Maitan IMO.

    The third guy, Jose Sanchez does not turn 16 until July 12. He is not in the class of the other three, but there is potential there.

    I hope the Nats get in on some Cubans as well. Johan oviedo, a huge hard throwing 18-year old pitcher sounds interesting. Also, there will be some surprises from this class and from this years DSL and GCL I’m sure. There always are with this scouting staff.

    Finally here’s hoping for a good draft. Perhaps a nice surprise like Groome or manning falling to the Nats.

    It is awesome having one of the best teams in MLB and some of the very best prospects. That does not happen often.

    1. Thanks John, that’s really interesting. I knew of Garcia but didn’t know who the other high profile July 2 guys were. $4m for Antuna tho .. yikes. That’s almost twice what Rizzo makes in a year. Is he a 16 yr old, too? DR or Vz?
