Syracuse 8 Rochester 3
• Cole (W, 3-1) 5IP, 4H, 3R, 2ER, 2BB, 5K, 2HR
• Masset 2IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 1K
• Goodwin 2-4, BB, RBI
• Skole 2-4, R, BB
• Sizmore 2-4, 2R, BB
A five-run 3rd broke open a 2-1 game as the Chiefs took their sixth straight by an 8-3 count over the RedWings. A.J. Cole labored through five innings (89 pitches, 53 strikes) to earn his third win. He gave up all three Rochester runs on four hits, including two homers, and two walks while fanning five. Matt Grace and Nick Masset both pitched two scoreless innings in relief. Trea Turner was the beer man as the rest of the lineup pounded out 13 hits and drew five walks (two by Turner, who also stole his 10th base; remember kids, the expression “beer man” comes from slow-pitch softball where walks and stolen bases aren’t a thing).
Harrisburg 3 Hartford 2 (11 inn.)
• Lopez 6⅓ IP, 3H, 2R, 1ER, BB, 7K, 0HR, HBP
• Bacus 3IP, 0H, 0R, 4BB, 3K
• Bostick 1-4, 2R, BB, HR, RBI
• Jeroloman 1-2, RBI
Christopher Bostick’s HR in the 11th sent the Harrisburg fans that remained home happy with a 3-2 win over Hartford. Reynaldo Lopez pitched into the 7th for the first time in 2016, but was saddled with a no-decision when Wander Suero couldn’t strand three with one out in the 7th, instead allowing the tying run on infield single before rolling a double-play ball. Lopez struck out seven, walked one, and was charged with both Yard Goat runs on three hits over six and a 1/3rd innings. Dakota Bacus held things down for three innings, though he walked four. The win, however, went to Andrew Robinson for a scoreless 11th. Bostick and veteran Brendan Webb were the only two Sens to reach base twice as Harrisburg mustered just seven hits and two walks (Bostick and Webb) on the night.
Potomac vs. Lynchburg – PPD
They’ll play a minimum of 19 innings today — weather permitting, natch — as they try to complete Monday’s game and make yesterday’s rainout along with today’s regularly scheduled with a pair of seven-inning games.
Hagerstown – OFF DAY
The Suns have won seven of nine on the road thus far as they embark on a seven-game swing through North Carolina and West Virginia to play the Intimidators for three and the Power for four.
Great to see such a strong start from Lopez. The one from Cole looks a bit shaky, indicative of his season thus far. It’s time for him to take the next step and really show that he can dominate at this level.
Voth has passed Cole as the best pitcher on the farm.
Giolito would like a word….
To frame the discussion slightly differently, if the big club lost a starter right now (Heaven forbid!), who would get the call? Voth and Giolito aren’t on the 40-man, but Cole and Jordan are, although I don’t think that would be the deciding factor. My call would go to . . . Voth, not because he’s “better” than Giolito, but because he’s farther along in development at this stage, is more stretched out (Giolito hasn’t gone more than four innings in a start), and the club really would like to make it to July with Giolito because of Super 2 issues.
All of that said, I wouldn’t be surprised if the call actually went to Giolito. But let’s all hope that no call has to be made!
Doesn’t Voth have the same Super 2 issue that Giolito does?
If so, Cole would get the call up until the deadline has passed for Giolito or Voth to gain Super 2 eligibility. After that point, it will depend on who is pitching better. Right now, it’s not close, Voth is the most effective starting pitcher on the farm.
I don’t think the Nats would be nearly as worried about a Voth Super 2, as it’s doubtful he will want a $300M contract in 2023. The other fella might. In which case, he’ll be replacing Stras again, with the Dodgers . . .
