Any hope of earning a series split was dashed immediately as Norfolk scored five times in four innings en route to a 6-0 shutout of Syracuse. Aaron Laffey bore the brunt of the beating, washed over by the Tides for five runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out just one. Tony Campana singled twice, Brian Goodwin singled and walked, which the rest of the lineup matched (Jason Martinson and Matt Skole, respectively) as two Norfolk pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout.

After the regular bullpen blew a 4-0 lead, starter turned reliever John Simms held down the fort until the offense could rally in the 13th for a 5-4 Sens win over the BaySox. Harrisburg starter Jaron Long was charged with two runs on two hits and two walks over six and 2/3rds innings while fanning six. He left with the bases loaded and a 4-0 lead, which was gone by the 9th as Bowie got two in the 7th and single runs in 8th and 9th to force extras. Simms pitched the rest of the way, giving up two hits and a walk over four scoreless innings for the win. Shawn Pleffner’s third single to lead off the 13th proved to be the gamewinner as pinch-runner Stephen Perez took third on a botched sacrifice and scored on Rafael Bautista sac fly.

The good news: Hagerstown scored single runs in the 3rd and 4th; the bad news: Greensboro answered both times with two-spots and scored again in the 6th to take the opener, 5-2. Andrew Lee got hammered for four runs on five hits and two walks over four innings to suffer the loss, his first. Matthew Page and Cody Dent both went 1-for-3 with a run scored as the Suns were held to just five hits total.

The Grasshoppers completed the doubleheader sweep with a two-run homer in the bottom of the 6th to turn a 1-0 deficit into the winning outcome of 2-1. Matthew Crownover got the spot start and blanked Greensboro for four innings on four hits while setting six down on strikes. Tommy Peterson served up the gamewinner in his second inning of work to wear the “L.” The Suns matched their hit total of five with Max “For Those About To” Schrock driving in Ryan Ripken in the 5th for the lone Hagerstown run.
