Buffalo 4 Syracuse 2
• Cole (L, 3-2) 3⅔ IP, 5H, 4R, 4ER, 3BB, 4K, HR, 87-53 P-K
• Runion 2⅓ IP, 2H, 0R, 0BB, 2K, 1-0 IR-S
• den Dekker 1-4, R, K

• Guys not named Matt 0-23, R, RBI, 10K

Buffalo erased an early 2-1 deficit with a three-run 4th as they took the game, 4-2 and split the series, 2-2. A.J. Cole took the loss, unable to make it out of the 4th with all four Bisons runs charged on five hits and three walks over three and 2/3rds innings. He gave up his fourth HR and struck out four. The offense managed to score twice on just three hits, aided by two Buffalo errors in the 4th inning.
Roster move: UT Jose Lozada placed on the 7-Day DL

Trenton 7 Harrisburg 5
• Mendez (L, 0-2) 3+ IP, 8H, 6R, 6ER, 2BB, 1K, HR
• Self 3IP, 1H, 0R, BB, 2K
• Bostick 3-5, 2B, RBI
• Difo 2-5, 3B, 2RBI
• Bautista 2-5, R, CS

The Thunder rolled for five in the 4th against the Senators to take a 6-3 lead and held off a late charge for a 7-5 win. Gilberto Mendez started in place of Reynaldo Lopez — no word on why — and was pummeled for six runs on eight hits and two walks over three-plus innings for the loss. Brenden Webb was the beer man as the Senators pounded out 14 hits, led by Chrisopher Bostick’s 3-for-5 effort and Wilmer Difo’s single and two-run triple while going 2-for-5.

Potomac 2 Frederick 1
• Valdez 7IP, 1H, 0R, 3BB, 3K
• Ross (H, 2) 1IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 1K
• Orlan (SV, 3) 1IP, 0H, 0R, BB, 1K
• Stevenson 3-4, SB, CS
• Masters 1-2, R, BB, HR, 2RBI

Phillips Valdez, Greg Ross, and R.C. Orlan combined on a one-hitter and outdueled Frederick’s trio of pitchers to take the game (and the series), 2-1. Valdez went seven inning for the third straight start, giving up the lone Keys hit and three walks while striking out three. Ross followed with a perfect 8th for the hold while Orlan worked around a walk for the save. Andrew Stevenson singled three times to push his BA to .340, which is fifth-best in the Carolina League, but David Masters was responsible for the two P-Nats runs with a two-run homer in the second.

Hagerstown 4 West Virginia 3
• Baez (W, 1-3) 5IP, 1H, 0R, BB, 6K
• Rivera (S, 1) 1IP, 1H, 1R, 0ER, 0BB, 0K
• Tillero 2-4
• Sagdal 2-4, R

The Suns eked out another one, surviving another, um, Power surge late for a 4-3 win. Joan Baez spun five scoreless innings with just one hit and one walk allowed while fanning six. Veteran Trey Lambert followed with two goose eggs before West Virginia knocked him for two in the 8th. An error, single, and a sac fly in the 9th plated the final Power run as Mariano Rivera III earned his first save of 2016. Jorge Tillero, Ian Sagdal, and Victor Robles each had two hits as Hagerstown collected nine hits and one walk total for the game.

Hey, hey, two long-awaited greats starts from the power arms of Valdez and Baez. The arm of Cole continues a disturbing trend, though.

Luke, love the “Guys not named Matt” stat. For those who are, it’s good to see Skole continue his climb out of sub-Mendoza territory. Ditto for Difo.

Cole is getting very close to bust territory. Because of his big signing bonus and relative youth I imagine they’ll let him ride out his full three option years, but it’s getting to the point where maybe they should try him as a bullpen arm to try and recoup at least some of their investment in him.

Realize that it’s only one game, but Trea Turner with the golden sombrero on Sunday: 4 ABs – 4 Ks. Yikes.

Whiffed in his previous at bat as a pinch hitter, too, so for Turner that’s five straight plate appearances where he failed to put a ball in play. Hope he bounces back on track soon, because the Nats really need him. To be fair, he’s overall not far off track – but he’s been merely good after an otherworldly start to the AAA season.

It looked like a few of the Frederick guys were getting pretty frustrated with Valdez yesterday. He was very expressive and animated on the mound. I thought it was a great performance.

The Red Sox signed Nate Frieman (Nats released him a couple of weeks ago) and assigned him to AA Portland.

The Nats acquired C Martin Medina from the Blue Jays for cash. He last played in AA in 2015. Not sure where they will place him.
