Syracuse 5 Lehigh Valley 1 – GAME ONE
• Cole (W, 1-0) 5IP, 1H, 1R, 0ER, 2BB, 2K, WP
• Solis (H, 1) 1IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 2K
• Turner 1-2, 2R, BB, SB
• Sizemore 1-2, 2R, 2B, 2BB, SB
• Skole 1-3, R, 2RBI
The Chiefs put up a two-spot early and three-spot late to take the opener, 5-1. A.J. Cole was the winner with an unearned run let in on one hit and two walks while setting down two (2) on strikes. Trea Turner and Scott Sizemore both stole a base and scored twice while Matt Skole drove in two to lead the Syracuse offense.
Syracuse 2 Lehigh Valley 1 – GAME TWO
• Jordan 5IP, 4H, R, ER, 2BB, 2K, WP
• Gott (W, 1-0) 1IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 1K
• Masset (SV, 1) 1IP, 0H, 0R, BB, K
• Martinson 1-2, R, HR, BB, RBI
• Turner 0-1, R, 2BB, SB
Trea Turner walked, stole second and took third on error, then scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 6th as Syracuse took the finale, 2-1 and swept the doublehader. Taylor Jordan started and gave up Lehigh’s run on four hits and two walks while striking out two. Trevor Gott and Nick Massett followed with a scoreless inning apiece for the win and save, respectively. Jason Martinson’s solo shot in the 1st accounted for the other Chiefs run. Roster move: C Nick Rickles reassigned from XST
Harrisburg 10 Altoona 4
• Mapes (W, 1-0) 5IP, 8H, 4R, 4ER, 0BB, 5K, HR
• Mendez (H, 1) 2IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 2K, WP
• Bautista 1-3, 4R, 2B, 3BB, SB
• Difo 2-4, R, RBI, 2BB
• Pleffner 2-4, BB, 3RBI
Like a corrupt accountant, Harrisburg’s batters continue to put crooked numbers in the books as they took Game Two from Altoona by a 10-4 score. The Sens scored once in the 1st, three times in 4th, then twice in the 5th, 8th, and 9th innings as they rallied from a 2-1 deficit and broke a 4-4 tie. Tyler Mapes got the benefit of the onslaught, earning the “W” with despite coughing up four runs on eight hits over five innings. Rafael Bautista and Wilmer Difo both reached base four times as the Sens racked up 13 hits and 10 walks on the night.
Potomac 5 Wilmington 2
• Estevez 2⅔ IP, 4H, R, ER, 2BB, 3K
• Orlan (BS, 1; W, 1-0) 2IP, 1H, 1R, 0ER, 2BB, 4K
• Brinley (SV, 1) 1IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 2K
• Ward 2-4, 2R, BB
• Marmolejos-Diaz 1-3, 2R, 2BB
• Masters 2-5, RBI, SB
For one play, the Blue Rocks dropped from High-A to low comedy as they committed two throwing errors on a sacrifice that enabled both the batter and the baserunner to score on the same play and snap a 2-2 tie. The P-Nats would tack on another in the 9th for the eventual 5-2 tally. Potomac starting pitcher Wirkin “For The Weekend” Estevez, who had UCL replacement in 2015, left after 50 pitches with an injury, giving up one run on four hits and two walks over two and 2/3rds. The blown-save-win went to R.C. Orlan, who gave up the tying run in the 7th but pitched a scoreless 8th. Ryan Brinley set the side down in order in the 9th for the save. Drew Ward and Jose “Orange” Marmolejos-Diaz combined for three hits, four runs, and three walks to lead the Potomac offense.
Hagerstown 6 Delmarva 4
• Hearn 5IP, 4H, 1R, 0ER, BB, 4K
• Rivera (BS, 1; W, 1-0) 1⅓ 1H, 0R, BB, K, 3-3 IR-S
• Robles 2-4, 2R, 2B, 2SB
• Page 2-4, R, 2SB
• Tillero 2-4
Delmarva couldn’t stand the prosperity of a 4-3 lead courtesy of three-run rally in the top of the 8th and gave ’em all back in the bottom of the 8th as Hagerstown took this one, 6-4. The Suns put the pressure on with three stolen bases in their final turn at bat and six overall on the night. Four — two for each — came from the legs of Victor Robles and Matthew Page, who both went 2-for-4, as did Jorge Tillero. Taylor Hearn started and allowed an unearned run on four hits and a walk over the first five innings for the no-decision. Mariano Rivera III let in all three inherited runners by giving up a three-run double to the first batter he faced with two outs in the 8th. He worked around a walk in the 9th to earn the blown-save-win. Roster move: RHP Jose Morales placed on the 7-Day DL.
A sweep for the organisation on the first full day of minor league play! Here’s what I’m liking:
– Bautista walking 6 times in 2 games;
– mejia with a 3B and a walk;
– Ward starts off strong;
– Robles. Going to enjoy ‘watching’ him;
– speed generally.
Strong showing by Hearn. Have to root for him, he’s the only one in the organization with bigger feet than me. 🙂
So much to like here, small sample size understood.
See that Brewer scout liked him in viera on 3/31
Hearn wears a size 17? I know Ward wears a size 16, so…
Looks like Wirkin for the weekend is still in rehab mode.
Difo walked TWICE?!?
Observations:
Last year affiliate sweeps were very few and far between. Maybe need a pic of Spike with a broom, like Patrick Reddington.
Syracuse – Terrific starting pitching – and Cole one hit in five innings. Sammy Solis with an easy, non-laborious inning, but Trevor Gott does lightning work. Martinson in both 3B and LF, groomed for Zobrist work at the next level if he can elevate his game.
Harrisburg – “Lecroy’s are back in town” Lots of offense to erase an anemic and boring 2015. Bautista at four runs scored and the walks already separating him from Eury Perez. Someone else to watch and get excited about with Revere on a two year leash. Yes, John, Difo with three walks – and no K’s – taking Baker’s advice to heart about not getting obsessed with the HR. great to see Keyes, Harper and Ballou react to demotions by coming out strong.
Potomac – Mario Sanchez is a man on the come. Mejia walks and the NP crowd is agog! 🙂 KKoda + (no)BBrinley at closer.
Hagerstown – Tillero going to take his shot to outclass Reetz in the pecking order. Taylor Hearn rides well with the hype.
13 organizational stolen bases, 3 errors on the day.
Opponents 0 SB, 9 errors
I’ll take that ratio anytime. Good times.
Robles is definitely going to be fun to watch…He is very fast
Hearn has an easy wind up….Ball jumps out of his hand…
