Rochester 9 Syracuse 0
• Bleier (L, 5-2) 4⅔ IP, 12H, 6R, 6ER, BB, 3K
• McGregor 2⅓ IP, 3H, 0R, 0BB, 1K
• Mastroianni 1-4, OF assist at HP
It’s feast or famine down the stretch for the Chiefs as they were starved by the RedWings, 9-0. Richard Bleier was knocked for six of those runs on 12 hits and a walk over four and 2/3rds innings as he lost his second AAA game. The offense mustered just five hits — all singles — no walks and struck out nine times. The loss formally eliminated Syracuse from postseason play.
Harrisburg 4 Richmond 3
• Simms 6IP, 5H, 0R, 0BB, 9K
• N. Lee (W, 2-0) 1IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 2K
• Bostick 2-5, 2B
• Jeroloman 1-2, R, 2BB
After blowing a 1-0 lead in the 7th, Harrisburg rallied for three in the 9th for a 4-3 win. John Simms tossed six shutout innings with five hits allowed, no walks, and nine strikeouts for the no-decision. Nick Lee and Paul Demny each put up a goose egg in the 8th and 9th innings for the win and save. Brian Goodwin’s two-run single completed the comeback that began with Brian Jeroloman’s one-out single, back-to-back walks by Adrian Sanchez and Isaac Ballou, and an infield single by Wilmer Difo.
Potomac vs. Frederick — PPD
The P-Nats’ three-day homestand was shortened to two with a rainout on Monday night. They’ll make it up tonight with a doubleheader beginning at 5:05 p.m.
Hagerstown — OFF DAY
After the final scheduled off day of the season, Hagerstown travels to Lakewood for four games before returning to the Muni for their final homestand over the weekend. The Suns finish 2015 on the road with five games in Lexington.
Auburn 5 Mahoning Valley 2
• J. Rodriguez (W, 3-5) 6IP, 6H, 2R, 2ER, BB, 4K, HR
• Boghosian (H, 3) 2IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 0K
• Kerian 2-3, R, 2B, BB, SB
• Encarnacion 2-4, R, 2B, HR, 4RBI
• Robles 2-4, R, 2B
Randy Encarnacion tied the game with a solo HR in the 4th, then gave Auburn the lead for good with a three-run double in the 5th in a 5-2 win over Mahoning Valley. Jefry Rodriguez got the win, his third for the Doubledays, with a quality start (his fourth overall) of two runs let in on six hits and a walk while setting down four on strikes. Adam Boghosian (2IP) and Kevin Mooney (1IP) combined for three scoreless innings of relief to notch the hold and the save, respectively. Encarnacion was one of five batters to notch multiple hits as the Doubledays collected twelve total and walked twice.
Wow, strong start for Simms, who has whittled his AA ERA down to 3.13, to 2.86 including A+ and AA this year, with an overall WHIP for 2015 of 1.16. Yet no one seems to talk about him.
Simms is not at all under the radar. He tires last year and started slowly in 15. Yesterday was his best performance at AA to date. He is not a stuff pitcher but a guy who allegedly knows how to pitch. Yesterday, he really knew how. Behind Voth on the AA pecking order, though.
Rhett Wiseman sure is a streaky hitter.
The Nats 3rd Rd. pick from Vandy got hits 9 of his first 11 games at Auburn and was hitting .325 (13-for-40) with 3 HRs and 2 2Bs.
In his next 15 games, he had seven games without a hit and went 9-for-64 (.140) with two doubles to drop his average to .222.
Now he’s rising a 10-game hitting streak and has hits in 14 of his last 15 games, during which time he is 19-for-61 (.311) with 6 doubles and a homer.
He’s a lefty hitter with some pop (.566 slugging at Vandy this year) and a winning pedigree, so there’s a lot to like about him. But adding some consistency would certainly help his case.
My “glass half full” view will be to take that as “he’s already making the adjustments needed to cope with pro ball”… 🙂
So far Wiseman’s streakiness seems to be typical of of high K, low average power hitters. Hopefully, we’ll see his home run totals increase with experience, because as we all know the Nats could sorely use a legitimate prospect with power.
He’s a Vandy alum. He will be fine just fine as april wine
Going into tonight’s game, A.J. Cole has an August ERA of 1.05 in 25.2 innings (4 starts), and has 22 Ks and just 4 BBs. Perhaps it was the injury holding him back earlier this season, because it would be nice to see him rebound and seriously compete for the last open rotation spot next spring.
Cole has been amazing in August. Not sure if because of no more injury or he changed something but he is completely different. Hope for another good one tonight.
Good signs from Cole
