Matt Skole’s two-run HR in the 6th proved to be the difference as the Chiefs rebounded to beat Buffalo, 3-1. Bruce Billings tossed six shutout innings without a walk and five hits allowed to earn his eighth win. Rafael Martin worked around a two-out walk in the 9th to earn save no. 10. Jason Martinson singled and walked in four trips to the plate and was the sole Syracuse batter to reach base twice.

Austin Voth recovered from the shock of having a nine-run lead to work with in the top of the 2nd as the Senators went medieval on the Sea Dogs’ [buttocks] in the 1st en route to a 12-1 demoliton. Voth gave up the lone Portland run on five hits total over five innings to get the win, his fifth. Brian Goodwin singled and doubled and drove in three and led the regulars in the 15-hit outburst by Harrisburg.
Roster move: C Adderling Ruiz reassigned from Potomac.

Potomac 4 Lynchburg 2

Potomac took advantage of an error and a wild pitch to score twice in the 6th as they doubled up Lynchburg, 4-2. Matt Spann won his second Car. Lg. game with five innings of one-run ball on four hits and a walk while fanning two. Bruan Dupra followed with three scoreless for his second hold. Alec Keller singled three times in five ABs to lead the Potomac offense, followed by Rafael Bautista’s two doubles and stolen base No. 20.
Roster move: 3B Drew Ward reassigned to GCL Nationals for MiLB rehab.

Lexington 7 Hagerstown 4

The Legends scored five times in the last four innings to turn a 2-2 tie into a 7-4 win. Erick Fedde started but had a no-decision with two runs let in on five hits and two walks. He struck out three and gave up a HR. Kevin Perez took the loss with a runs allowed in both the 6th and 7th innings. Raudy Read and Wilman Rodriguez both went 2-for-4 with an RBI to pace the Hagerstown attack.

Williamsport 9 Auburn 3

Williamsport scored four in the 8th and three in 9th to turn a 2-2 tie into a 9-3 smackdown of Auburn. Matt Crownover started and turned in five shutout innings but saw his 2-0 lead vanish in the top of the 6th. Sam Johns lost for the second time this week as he allowed four unearned runs in the 8th. Rhett Wiseman doubled twice and drove in one while Darryl Florentino singled and tripled to account for four of the eight Doubledays hits.

GCL Update
The G-Nats went 2-4 in their penultimate week of play and were eliminated from the GCL East division race. Looking ahead to 2016, Dominican teenagers Anderson Franco and Telmito Agustin (both 18) are sporting OPS’s of .753 and .855 respectively while almost-20-y.o. Wilber Pena and and 21-in-Dec. Joan Baez are 1-2 in games started.

DSL Update
Likewise, the D-Nats closed out their season with a 2-4 mark and overall record of 31-41, which was good for a 4th-place finish in the Boca Chica North division and 19 games behind the D-Rangers1. Among the first-timers, 17-y.o. Roberto Medina led the batters with a .317/.372/.442 albeit in 34 games while 18-y.o. Pedro Avila had the lowest ERA (2.26) and WHIP (1.06), was second in IP and GS, and averaged a staggering 13.1 K/9IP vs. an equally impressive 2.6 BB/9IP.

  1. One quibble on the Harrisburg write-up. Voth didn’t give up a home run.

    Voth gave up a one-out single to Tejeda. Asauje singled past the diving Pleffner into right and Drew Vettleson attempted a throw to third to cut off Tejeda that wasn’t handled well. Then Lawley singled into left to score Tejeda.

  3. Curious where folks are on Goodwin. Is he a disappointment at this point? Or is he just recovering from injury and we should write this year off? Personally, I am concerned but I’m not ready to write him off. If Destin Hood can come back from prospect purgatory, I believe that skilled development staff can find a reasonable percentage of the talent that made him a high draft pick. After all, Justin Maxwell had his struggles and disappointments. Maxwell’s no longer the stud that he we hoped he would be, but he is a solid major league bench player. He’s in The Show with the opportunity for his Tyler Moore postseason moment that makes him immortal.

    1. First time commenter who has lurked for years (I enjoy the comments almost as much as the updates). I felt compelled to respond on Goodwin because I was a big fan of the pick and was really excited about his potential after the Az Fall league. It seems he’s starting hitting a little more the last week or so, though its admittedly a limited sample size. So, maybe it’s just taken him awhile to get past the injury.

      I think he gets another year and hope he succeeds because there is a real need for his skillset in DC with Span approaching free agency and Werth’s age. Even if Taylor has locked up CF (though there might still be debate on that if the K rate doesn’t fall a bit more) there’s still a need for any additional lefty bat (with the speed to play center in a pinch). I guess Stephenson potentially could fill that role if he’s fast mover through the system. I’d guess at this point Rizzo would either trade pitching for that additional outfielder or sign a moderately priced free agent.

      1. Les, Thanks for commenting. The best way to enjoy the comments is to get in and participate and help encourage people to get involved in the site. Luke does a great job staying active and keeping things like so bullies don’t get too much run but freedom of speech and oddballs (who I shall not name!) feel free to post in their *unique* lexicon and form. My hope in Goodwin is that he plays his way into tradeable asset status. We need Werth to earn his money. Harper has right locked up, and MAT can take one step forward and become an outstanding major league regular. How many would have picked Taylor to be sixth on the team in WAR (per Baseball-reference) at the start of the season? Admittedly, much of that is underperforming colleagues, but he’s far exceeded my expectations again this year. I’m willing to chalk this up to a lost year for Goodwin, but we need him to have a strong start next year so that he can be a tradable asset. Ultimately, he needs to go to an organization farther from winning that can afford to give him development time in the bigs I feel.

    2. After paying $4 for Goodwin I’m sure the f.o. considers him a bust.
      He will not be protected from the rule V and he hasn’t shown that he’s moving forward.
      Don’t even know what happened to Hood.

      With these guys, you’re just happy for them that they got a big chunk of money to secure their future.

      1. Hood bombed with Cleveland’s AAA team, was released, and is now at AA with the Phils. He is still only 25, amazingly enough.

        1. Karl, I’m very aware Hood bombed this year. I hope last year was his ceiling but he does seem trapped in Leonard Davis 2.5A territory, a not fun place to be.

      2. In that case, and since he’s already on the 40 man, why not call him up Sept 1 and see if he can contribute in any way??

    3. Goodwin looks pretty close to done to me. The injury is over a year old, and he wasn’t exactly raking before he got hurt. As for Hood, he did indeed bounced back last year but has fallen off again this season.

      MA Taylor “won” the race to be the Nats’ next CF’er, and with Stevenson and Robles coming on quickly I wouldn’t be surprised if Goodwin gets DFA’ed this fall.

    4. I’m sure Goodwin will make the September roster, but struggle to get any playing time. After that, it’s a decent chance he’ll be exposed to the Rule 5 draft.

      For all the hype, he has little recent track record to justify it. A very good season in ’12 in Hagerstown, followed by a good, but not great, season in ’13 in Harrisburg. But since then, it’s been a black hole.

      I think he still has a role to play with the Nats. Our upper level OF depth is miserable.

      Keyes has reinvented his career, but is in the same situation as Goodwin. I think Den Dekker still has a year of control left, and Ballou is an interesting option too. But that’s about it of players that could contribute next season. We sort of need Goodwin, even if he’s not a particularly appealing option.

    1. Jeff, like it or not, we’re in it to the bitter end for the final year of this group with the big club this year. No farm playoffs and until the Nats are more than 6 games out, they have 6 games against the Mets that will more likely be Custer’s Last Stand for guys like Desmond and Zimmermann. Zimmermann has probably pitches his way to a big payday if he can show strong down the stretch. He posts, and he’s a quality three and he’s not afraid of cold weather. As for Desmond, I think he is what he is. All pop mistake hitter who can be streaky in the field with an odd skill set. I’ll be very curious to see what he commands in the open market. It’s still baseball season, though. No melancholy for me until November and even then I tend to pivot to hockey and the college sports.
