After taking two of three from Pawtucket, the Chiefs return to upstate New York to face Buffalo for three games before taking on Rochester for five games (three home, two away) next week.

Lucas Giolito wasn’t as sharp as he was last Friday night, but hung in for five innings to get the win as Harrisburg downed Akron, 5-3. The reigning E.L. Pitcher of the Week walked three and struck out five while allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits. He threw 87 pitches, 53 for strikes but struggled with his command. The offense pounded out 12 hits, including leadoff HRs by Drew Vettleson and Issac Ballou, doubles by Pedro Severino and Shawn Pleffner and a triple from Adrian Sanchez.

Potomac vs. Wilmington — CNCLD
Rain washed away the finale between the Blue Rocks and P-Nats on Thursday night. As the final meeting between the two teams in 2015, it will not be made up.
Roster move: RHP Reynaldo Lopez placed on 7-Day DL, retroactive to August 19.

Hagerstown vs. Lexington — PPD
Likewise, the folks in Hagerstown pulled the plug early in the afternoon. This one, however, will be made up tonight with twinbill starting at 4:35 p.m.

The Black Bears struck again for three in the 7th and completed the sweep of the two-game series with a 6-4 triumph over the Doubledays. Taylor Guilbeau got the start and went the first five, allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks without a strikeout. Mariano Rivera III was taken for three runs on five hits over two innings to suffer the loss, his second. David Kerian doubled and tripled while Rhett Wiseman homered as Auburn scored four times on just six hits.

  1. Frankly, it’s good seeing Giolito learning how to grind, which he had to do a few times at Potomac as well. The minors seemingly came too easily to Stras, who got to the big club challenged to cope when he didn’t have his best stuff or the bloops were falling.

    My concern is growing about our #4 pick, Rivera. They started him out as a starter, then moved him to the ‘pen when he struggled, only to see him struggle more. He’s not the first kid to get a rude awakening in pro ball, and won’t be the last. Perhaps it’s time for dad to work with him some on the magic pitch, though.

    Any news out there on Lopez’s injury? I recall that he left his last start with the dreaded twinges.

    1. Rivera has been hittable for sure but 20/2 K/BB ratio and 2.50 GO/AO still provide positives. Probably hitting his innings limits as well.

      1. Let’s see, Rivera threw 85 innings at Fordham this season and has put in 25 with Auburn, so a total of 110. He’s about to turn 22, so he might be extended more than some of the others since he’s a little older, but on the flip side of that, he only threw 70 innings in 2014, so you don’t want to ramp him up too much.

    And to double down on the Robles lovefest, Kiley McDaniel at Fangraphs just added Robles at #2 of his biggest gainers list. Giolito clocked in at #4 overall, and Turner at #15.

  6. If they are thinking about whether to move Desi, the time is now. Whether Turner plays SS or 2B with Desi – though he is not starting tonight. I don’t see him getting the Difo treatment. Clever move to bring him into the rotation and to keep Moore in the organization for Sep. 1 roster expansion. They simply moved up the clock with Turner.

    With Span coming back it creates interesting lineup challenge. Big weekend for Werth. Big night for Desi, August 21.

    1. I stand corrected, as I didn’t think there was any way they would bring up Turner before Sept., and perhaps not until next May. I’m not sure how much playing time he will get, but I don’t blame the Nats for doing everything they can.
