Syracuse — ALL-STAR BREAK
After last year’s aberration, all is back to normal in Syracuse at the break… just one (obligatory) I.L. all-star, in last place by 4½ games, and columnists bitching about the stadium.
Harrisburg 2 Erie 1
• Voth (W, 4-5) 7IP, 4H, R, ER, BB, 8K
• De Los Santos (SV, 6) 2IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 0K
• Robinson 2-4, 2B, RBI, CS
• Ballou 0-0, R, 3BB, SB, CS
• Dykstra 1-1, R, HR, RBI, E
Cutter Dykstra’s solo HR in the bottom of the 7th was the difference as Harrisburg edged Erie, 2-1 to earn a split of the four-game series. Austin Voth turned in seven innings of one-run ball, allowing the lone SeaWolves run on four hits and a walk while striking out eight for his fourth win. It also snapped a streak of three straight no-decisions. Derrick Robinson collected two of the Sens’ five hits while Isaac Ballou drew three of the five walks issued for the game.
Winston-Salem 3 Potomac 1 — SUSP.
Matt Purke’s return to the Carolina League was marred twice — once by the Winston-Salem batters, who knocked him for three runs in the 1st, then again in the 3rd when the rains came and suspended play. A makeup date is yet to be announced but the two teams have a remaining series in Woodbridge from August 11-13. With the 13th being a getaway matinee, look for the makeup to be played on the 11th to allow for a possible rainout.
Hagerstown — OFF DAY
The Suns are 9-9 in the second half as they hit the road for West Virginia and Kannapolis for six games before returning home next Wednesday.
Auburn 10 Staten Island 7
• Rivera 3+ IP, 6H, 4R, 3ER, 0BB, 3K
• Torres (W, 3-0) 2IP, 4H, 3R, 3ER, 2BB, 3K, 1-0 IR-S
• Borne (H, 1) 3IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 3K
• Me. Rodriguez 3-4, RBI
• Stevenson 3-5, 2R, 2B, SB
• Schrock 2-4, R, 2B, RBI
A five-run 5th dug the Doubledays out of a 7-3 hole as they took the series finale from the Yankees, 10-7. Mariano Rivera III was pounded for the second straight start, giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits over three-plus innings. Luis Torres was credited with the win but Grant Borne was the most effective reliever with three scoreless innings. Andrew Stephenson and Melvin Rodriguez both had three hits as Auburn notched 13 total on the night.
Roster moves: LHP McKenzie Mills reassigned to GCL Nationals; RHPs John Feliz, Matt Pirro reassigned from GCL Nationals.
Excuse me if this has already been discussed, but I just noticed that Jake Walsh is pitching in Hagerstown, and pitching exceptionally well. 13 IP of scoreless ball so far.
But… what the heck is he doing in Hagerstown? He destroyed high A pitching last season. 21 IP, a crazy good 27:4 K:BB ratio, and a 1.71 ERA.
So why was he demoted to Hagerstown this year?
Right you are. This is one of the many mysteries of the system that have been raised here, but you have articulated it well.
The best I can tell is that Walsh got hurt and then fell behind Nick Lee on the pecking order of closers and lefties, while Potomac amassed a lot of bullpen help from failures above (Self, Dupra). By the time Walsh regained traction on his season, Mendez and DeLos Santos righted their ship – even though nobody at Harrisburg seems to be particularly adept at shutting down inherited runners.
Now with Lee in AA, I would agree that Walsh to A+ seems like a no-brainer. We obviously have to root harder for him as a 34th rd draft pick. He has certainly sustained his success to a greater degree than David Napoli and Justin Thomas, two other college products drafted well higher in 2013. One can’t take issue with no earned runs and good control in high leverage situations.
Jake the Mizzou snake caught in a numbers
Game ?? Mechanics mixed with injury this summer?
Impressive to see unfamiliar auburn lineup
Lock in on yanx last night in a game which seemed
All yanx early.
Yawn : just another Stevenson 3 hit game joined
By Melvin Rodrieguez ( yeah) in the hit parade .
I am joining kris kline in the Bourne love fest .
Time for McKenzie Mills to fix his stuff @ GCL
And shift to bullpen ?
With Mills going down, Borne may be in line to get a rotation shot.
Stevenson is NFL (not for long) in Auburn U. Though still no thump. System collecting leadoff hitters when we need more bop.
The timing is right for Severino to turn it up in Harrisburg. There is no Sandy Leon in sight is Wilson reverts to history. And Kieboom is not getting any younger in A+.
Congrats Phillip Dietrick on your first Nats
Career long ball . GCL 7/14 vs Marlins. .
3 run tater
We need table setters for the small ball skippers .
In chain. . still awaiting the ABs and repetitions
To take effect on all the sluggers from Gardner
To toolsy Latin kids .
Great story behind RHP matt pirro whose father and grandfather
Both pitched in organized ball .
Sorry if this has already been asked, but what ever happened to Johanssen? Is he injured?
Yes. 7 day DL
Thanks Jeff, but his last appearance was June 17. Shouldn’t he have been activated by now? How does the 7 day DL work?
Look @ Oduber on 7 day DL which has
Dragged on to a month or so.
The rumors about Will Difo being shopped with Lopez enables us to look ahead
to the infield depth chart for 2016. as in a Broadway show, Difo exiting would shift the
spotlight from Difo on the farm to Abreau who should jump to Potomac in ~16
with Masters, Meiija and Kinery. ( question mark a mystery on this hotel PC keyboard).
GG~s chorus line audition theory is spot on. brass knows several levels needs
several guys to step up and claim certain infield spots. Auburn has a medley of infielders
who should arrive in Hagerstown next spring. But all of us know with a cynical grin that
XST always plays a part in spring time assignments or lack of them.
I am sure brass is hoping that some of the R´R corner infielders can step up
by next season to taste a cup of April coffee in Hagerstown. a couple GCL jumpers.
time will tell.
Stephen Perez, you will still be appreciated in AA next spring.
