He struck out five and hit a batter. Blake Treinen followed with two scoreless innings of relief. Jason Martinson walked, singled twice, homered, and drove in two runs to lead the Syracuse attack, which racked up 13 hits and left on 13 baserunners.
Roster move: RHP Jose Valverde released.

• Pleffner 1-2, 3R, HR, 3BB, 2RBI
• Jeroloman 2-4, 2R, 2B, BB, 3RBI
Cutter Dykstra went 5-for-5 while three Sens combined on a six-hit shutout as Harrisburg shut out New Hampshire, 13-0 in the series finale. Dykstra was a triple shy of the cycle, scored twice and drove in two as the offense piled up 17 hits with everybody hitting. Richard Bleier spun seven scoreless and gave up four hits, no walks, and struck out two while winning his eighth AA game. Erik Davis and Bryan Harper both put up a zero on the scoreboard to complete the shutout bid, which ended a three-game losing streak.
Frederick 5 Potomac 1
• Williams (L, 1-2) 4⅔ IP, 5H, 4R, 2ER, 2BB, 1K
• Dickson 2⅓ IP, 1H, 0R, 2BB, 1K, 2-0 IR-S
• Rendon 3-3, RBI
• Mesa 3-4, R, 2B
Austen Williams no-hit the Keys for four innings before Frederick broke through for four in the 5th en route to a 5-1 win over Potomac.
The 22-y.o. Texan allowed four runs (two earned) on five hits and two walks over four and 2/3rds innings to lose his second game for the P-Nats. Anthony Rendon singled three times in three ABs and ran hard (how novel) while Narciso Mesa went 3-for-4 with a double to lead the Potomac offense. The P-Nats went just 1-for-8 with RISP and stranded 10 baserunners.
Roster moves: OF Rafael Bautista activated from the 7-Day DL; 1B Jimmy Yezzo released.
Hagerstown 4 Savannah 3
• M. Sanchez (W, 5-4) 5IP, 7H, 3R, 3ER, 0BB, 3K

Hagerstown scored four times in the first four innings and held on for a 4-3 win over Savannah. Mario Sanchez let in all three Gnats runs on seven hits with no walks and three strikeouts. R.C. Orlan (3IP) and Koda Glover (1IP) shut down Savannah the rest of the way to earn the hold (5th) and the save (1st) respectively. “Orange” Marmolejos-Diaz walked, singled, doubled, and homered to lead the Suns offense, which collected 11 hits and four walks total.
Vermont 6 Auburn 2

Vermont struck for three in the 5th to break a 2-2 tie and added another in the 8th for a 6-2 win over Auburn. Taylor Guilbeau took the loss, allowing the first five runs on nine hits and no walks while setting down three on strikes over four and a 1/3rd innings. Victor Robles continues to rake, as he went 2-for-4 with run scored and an RBI to push his batting average to .400 (6-for-15) since his callup from the GCL. As a team, the Doubledays managed just six hits and four walks on the night.
Too bad Harrisburg missed that second extra point . . .
I see that the New Hampshire starter in that game is named Taylor Cole. I had to laugh at that name, an obvious mutation of Syracuse rotation.
As I posted late yesterday, from what I saw on Valverde, he had an opt-out clause and actually requested his release. I wonder if he got the message after de los Santos and Solis were promoted over him.
Speaking of relievers, I don’t know that Bryan Harper has ever been considered much of a prospect because of his lack of velocity, but he’s been terrific this year, with a 1.27 ERA. An effective loogy can pitch forever.
If the Nats aren’t going to call up Erik Davis, I would think that they’ll be trying to include him in a deadline deal to clear his 40-man slot.
I’ve got Erik Davis as #1 guy on the cutting block if the team needs a 40-man roster spot. Clearly they don’t favor him any longer.
Valverde; if you’re adding non-40man rookies like Martin and de los Santos instead of calling him up, then the message is clear. Valverde (despite his decent looking line in AAA http://web.milb.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?t=t_ibp&cid=552&stn=true&sid=t552) just doesn’t have it and the team is looking elsewhere.
I think the DeLosSantos promotion is more than a pecking order move and has everything to do with a trading deadline decision.
Mark Grace and Rafael Martin have a future, somewhere. Both have stepped up their game. But the Nats know what they are getting. DeLos Santos was an unknown. Just like Treinin, Barrett, Solis, Jansen, Rivero, Carpenter, and Thornton, the Nats have to know what their organizational inventory is before they add payroll. With Treinen down in AAA and in the bullpen, there is no need for Valverde anymore.
Stevenson limbo is interesting to watch with Carey and Gardner and Page, all drafted in sequence in 2014, in Hagerstown. None of them warrants a promotion. Who gets the “Kevin Keyes” promotion to make room for Stevenson? Or is it Orange?
Five to watch (that you are not watching):
Gilberto Ramirez – OF who is finally getting his GCL at bats, old for the level, 6’4 with great SB ability, and hitting. Look out above.
Trea Turner – OK, so you are watching him. Suddenly, lots of errors. But he continues to hit on a tear. He’s not going to be denied.
Jason Martinson – With a punchless, hobbled major league parent club, not a bad deal to have a power hitting, great fielding LF-SS-3B one level away. His pop is back, and he has, for the first time, avoided a complete tank at a new level
John Simms – Really got on the map with a 14 strikeout start last year. Then he tired out. Started late this year, got poor support, but has been steadily improving. Eight shutout innings and ten strikeout start this week shows he’s back to his promise.
John Wooten – Should have advanced by now, but he was the bat that carried a championship run last year. Now, at long last, signs that he is waking up.
Lots of now or nevers in the Nats system. Again, that’s a good thing. Skole is fading, Goodwin is stalling, Keyes is reborn. Yezzo is the latest off the island.
GG, you did not say that Jimmy Yezzo released because Jose Marmelos is POTOMAC 1b 2016.
agree?
agree on Gilberto. would be very cool if Encarnación and Ramírez climbed ladder together with Mota
right behind them.
Robles neeeds some iced tea cause he is smoking hot!!! LOL!
GG, your opinión on Austin Davidson. 4 HRs in 160 ABs. Potomac 2016 with productive season
end plus Viera camps??
John Simms RICE pedigree helps.
Estarlin off the island after season??
GG promotion from where? Orange to Potomac for playoff run. Page plays more 1b with
Eusebio platoon???
I vote Gardner to Potomac. Not Ava. Jeff with the Louisville pedigree.
Trienen will be back. they need to sit him on the stool in the corner and let the stars go away
from Dodger series.
Jeff is watching Lora, GCL SS Martínez, Mel Rodrieguez, USC DeBruna ( brass let him switch
hit like Danny E this year!! DeBruna Hags utl guy 2016.
blah blah blah.
Luke , how are the dogs?? my dog is still upset @RIZZO not giving him a AAA contract to play CF
and get sept call up!! LOL!
A proper farewell to James Yezzo. 7th rounder out of Delaware in 2013. The good news for him was he signed for $165,000.
When you’re at 1st base the pressure to produce big-time is more than any other position.
In 150+ AB’s at Potomac, his OPS was a mere .506.
Making way for the next wave of talent.
Too early to tell Potomac 2016. M-D an obvious possibility for 2016.But what if Drew Ward needs more time and shifts to 1B? What if trade, etc. Lots of 2015 left for players to make a late run before fall workouts. Who steps up, who falls back….
The waiting is not limitless for the 2014 draft class. Williamson is gone, I think Langlois also. Davidson a lower draft pick than the others noted, so less money invested. They had higher hopes for him, but right now Bryan Mejia needs a position and brings more.
Gardner came with great offensive pedigree. But so did Yezzo (though smaller school). Neither Carey or Gardner has been a bust yet, as they are only 1 year in the system. But there is traction upward from below. There are more behind Stevenson. Wiseman has to be in the head to head on the depth chart with those three for Potomac 2016.
one more year for Ward at 3b.
GG, as you said so many infielders auiditioning at various 2b-3b combinations.
the reality is that so many spots under AA could be filled by Latin kids if only
some of those klds have could have advanced out of GCL-DSL the last few years but
stalled advancement the theme.
another theme is the hittinf dimensions in A plus and minus. some guys just stall and
exit the ladder. like american ninja they just miss grabbing the rung and moving forward.
lol.
Sure does not help that Latin pipeline has been behind schedule with helping fill out
spots in farm such as traditional everyday R and R 3b or slugging 1b. that explains all the
utility carousel rotations skippers playing in A ball levels.
Apparently Fedde was scouted by 2 Reds scouts last night…. Trade in the offing?
