Syracuse 4 Pawtucket 1
• Walters (W, 4-1) 5IP, 4H, R, ER, 2BB, 3K
• Meek (H, 2) 2IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 3K
• Mastroianni 2-4
• Keyes 1-3, R, BB, HR, 2RBI
A four-run 3rd proved to be enough for the Chiefs to take Game Two of the three-game series, 4-1. P.J. Walters allowed the sole PawSox run on four hits and two walks while striking out three to win his fourth game. Evan Meek led a trio of relievers who combined for four scoreless innings and six strikeouts. Kevin Keyes hit his third AAA home run and drove in two to lead the Syracuse offense.
Roster moves: RHP Taylor Jordan recalled to Washington; OF Tony Gwynn Jr. activated from the 3-Day TIL.
Altoona 3 Harrisburg 0
• Bleier (L, 6-3) 6IP, 10H, 3R, 3ER, 0BB, 1K
• Runion 1IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 1K
• Skole 2-4, 2B
• Difo 2-4
The Curve scored three times in the first four innings while three Altoona pitchers kept the Senators off the board for a 3-0 shutout. Richard Bleier was charged with all three runs on ten hits and no walks and just one strikeout over six innings as he lost his third AA game. Matt Skole’s double in the 6th was the sole extra-base hit of the eight that Harrisburg collected on the night.
Potomac 3 Wilmington 2 (14 inn.) — COMP
• Amlung (W, 1-0) 1IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 2K
• Keller 4-6, R, 2B, 3B, 2RBI
Potomac wasted no time in finishing off the Blue Rocks in the continuation, as Estarlin Martinez led off the 14th with single, took second on an Adrian Sanchez sacrifice, third on a groundout to the pitcher, and scored on Alec Keller’s fourth hit of the contest. Justin Amlung got the win for pitching the top of the 14th as he allowed one hit and struck out two.
Potomac 3 Wilmington 1 — GAME TWO
• Pivetta (W, 7-4) 7IP, 2H, R, ER, 0BB, 9K, HR
• Mapes (S, 1) 2IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 3K
• Sanchez 2-4. R
• Norfork 1-3, 2B
Nick Pivetta was perfect for 19 batters until Jack Lopez beat out a high-hop grounder that got past Grant DeBruin but not far enough for Lopez to take second base. It was ruled a hit. After Lopez was thrown out trying to steal, Pivetta lost the shutout on a long solo HR to LF. He would finish with seven innings pitched and one run allowed on two hits, no walks, and nine whiffs. The offense would give him three runs to work with, led by Adrian Sanchez (2-for-4), while Tyler Mapes closed out the game with two scoreless for his first save.
Hagerstown 7 Lakewood 5
• A. Williams (W, 8-1) 6IP, 5H, 3R, 3ER, BB, 4K
• Walsh (SV, 4) 1IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 0K
• Abreu 2-5, 2R, 2-2B, 2RBI
• Mejia 2-4, R, 3B, RBI
• Keniry 2-4, 2B
The Suns burst out of the gate for three in the 1st and added four more in the 4th as they held off a late Lakewood charge for a 7-5 win. Austen Williams turned in a quality start of three runs allowed on five hits and a walk while fanning four as he won for the eighth time. Jake Walsh worked around a one-out single in the 9th to earn his fourth save. Osvaldo Abreu doubled twice to take the lead in the Sally League at 24 two-baggers and was 2-for-5 with two RBI to lead the Suns attack.
Roster move: OF Wilman Rodriguez reassigned from Syracuse.
State College 7 Auburn 1
• Baez (L, 0-2) 2⅔ IP, 6H, 5R, 5ER, 3BB, 2K
• Gunter 2IP, 3H, 0R, 0BB, 2K
• Stevenson 3-4, R, SB
• Schrock 1-3, 2B, BB
State College put up crooked number in three innings while Auburn managed just one run in a 7-1 loss. Joan Baez remains winless in six starts at two levels as he was taken for five runs on six hits and three walks over two and 2/3rds innings for his second loss at the SS-A level. 2nd Rd. pick Andrew Stevenson went 3-for-4 with a run and a stolen base while 13th Rd. pick Max Schrock doubled and walked. The rest of the Doubledays were just 1-for-23 with no walks.
Roster move: RHP Taylor Hearn reassigned from GCL Nationals.
Joan Baez has had a pretty awful season, but Baseball Prospectus thinks there’s a pretty good talent there.
They say mechanics are fixable so not that great. I guess it is early in the season for him so hopefully they can sort him out cause it aint pretty so far! Early though so two more months to fix him.
We have few good pitchers today/tonight so look forward to see how they do.
Was Suero’s promotion to Harrisburg temporary to fill a couple spot starts? Otherwise, Pivetta appears much more deserving of a promotion.
Giolito pitching at home on Dollar Monday! If only the forecast would clear . . .
VERY interesting to see that Sandman Jr. is getting a shot at starting after previously appearing only in relief. He was a starter in college.
Looks like they were stretching him out. 2 IP then 3IP. I suspect they’ll probably yank him after the 5th.
Interesting that FRED Aguero was released but that
Just proves GGs theme that many are being auditioned
Down to GCL. Look @ NCAA alum Clsy Willismson
Who lost out in numbers game @ auburn.
Cole Poulck lefties numbers games
Carlos Pena NDFA RHP from Ky school. Any bio ?
Gil, I point to the Cathcart line up where Encarnacion
Helps bookend the lefty clean up on auburn. 3 run bomb
Tonight in losing effort . Cathcart giving a long look
@ rather consistent line up since Stevenson landed
In Auburn.
3 hit evening for difo and Turner each
Stellar outing for Dakota Bakus tonight. Two games
Under GG. Lol
Filthy Blake in 7 th!
Well, Bakus has certainly had the light go on for him this year and keeps getting better and against good teams. He appears to be the fastest riser among starting pitchers not named Joe Ross in the system right now. I find myself looking forward to his starts more than others in the system, though he has a long way to go. While Williams and vanOrden are cooling with the longer season, Bakus (and Simms) are heating up. Not bad return for Kurt Suzuki after all.
Very interesting point on the Auburn lineup. Though Dulin started well and it’s a bit disheartening to see him displaced for the higher priced Schrock. Glad to see he had two SB tonight.
No worries on Turner. And with Escobar battling hamstring problem and Desmond battling Desmond, not a moment too soon. I still think a Desi trade is coming, because otherwise they may be forced to offer him a one year max, which he would be smart to take at this point, or get nothing. It depends on whether they think Espinosa’s improvement is likely to sustain itself. Good to have Difo picking it up, and that will be important. But the key is his walks and power, which have yet to return.
Harrisburg’s resurrection is remarkable. I still think Giolito is the next man up there, not Pivetta. But it’s a crapshoot pick. Pivetta has earned it with a wonderful season, and he’s still pretty young.
Gil. I will always say your soliloquies are very
Enjoyable .
I will take PivettA over Spann @ Burg in the home
Stretch.
Odd that Auburn does not play @ Aberdeen this
Season .
Play Dessie and go with possible two June draft
Picks. The guy is due for something after getting robbed
Sunday twice .
Some GCL guys off to good starts with the bat …
Nice to see a Rafael Bautista sighting in the GCL yesterday – hopefully a brief rehab “get up to game fitness” assignment before an all-star break placement to Potomac?
Yes Kirkie .
Raffie and Mesa. Running down the Carolina
League
No roster could accommodate an outfield of Mesa, Bautista, and Keller. Maybe Bautista’s your Hagerstown solution.
