Austen Williams’ move up will be an interesting watch for me. second only to Giolito going to AA in 10 days.

Does anyone have a good scouting report on Williams? He’s sort of come out of nowhere this year after a mediocre start at Auburn last summer. He looks like a typical Rizzo draftee, a big hoss college arm. He only became a starter in his junior year is college, which I hope means low mileage on the arm.

The scout wasn’t too high on Williams…

Thanks. Interesting stuff. Since someone in the organization just worked a miracle with Strasburg’s mechanics, let’s hope the collective wisdom can get Williams straightened out as well.

Williams is one of those guys who has bought into the organization pitching philosophy. He is not afraid to throw strikes and go after hitters. So it is not so much his stuff as his maturation as a pitcher and approach.

The Nats are accumulating outstanding minor league pitching depth. If there is any serious consideration to trades for Zobrist types, it is likely to be starting pitchers like Williams in the same vein as Ivan Pineyro was sent to Chicago for Hairston a few years ago. The better the return, the more likely the player is an Austin Voth type. But the cupboards are stocked and I am sure that rival major league GMs know this as well. When a player like Nathan Karns works out as he has, it reflects well on the system’s developmental capabilities and Rizzo’s approach to trade quality for quality.

I’ve been saying for two years that Voth is going to end up with the A’s. I’m not wishing him away, but he seems like the less-than-overpowering guy who still gets a lot of K’s, which is the type Billy Beane seems to collect while unloading the hard throwers like Treinen.

The Twins collect those guys, too, except without the K’s. See, e.g., Tommy Milone who ended up in Minneapolis by way of Oakland.
